My father-in-law collects stamps and cigarette cards- he's got hundreds of thousands of the buggers.  Whenever we go round there, he's holed up in his 'den' sorting through another batch.

"What you got there then, Bob?"

"Nothing much- few odds and sods"

"Worth anything?"

"Naaaah....  'bout five hundred or so".

It's the same story every week.  He's retired now, so spends his time buying up odds and ends to make into collections to sell at auction- only he hardly ever sells the fuckers (he reluctantly shifts a few when he needs to pay for holidays and wotnot- but that's about it.  I've told him he's got to catalogue the lot before he pops his clogs as I don't want to have to learn the intricacies of stamp collecting before cashing in on his life's work.

Fuck knows why he always laughs- I'm deadly serious.

I say it is't having worked at stamp exhibitions in London, Amsterdam and Beijing, research stamp subject and written their direct mail I can confirm they are the ultimate geeks.
I have too much knowledge of this subject in my head from working with it over the last 20 odd years, still they said philately would get me no where ;)

If you even want to see these chaps in their purest form contact the Decimal Stamp Study Circle, lovely chaps just eccentric but not in a contrived way.
Having said all that I did get to meet Tom Baker and got him to sign a stamped Dalek postcard, the shame!!

We had Muppet stamps this year!  Those are even better than old DC superheroes.

The Irish Post Office issued these a few years ago- I'm a big Rory Gallagher and Thin Lizzy fan. I didn't get them though, because at the end of the day, what do I need more junk cluttering up the house for?

Time enough to get them on ebay years from now for a ridiculous price
