I'm really enjoying listening to Ricky Gervais' Podcasts on the way to work on a morning and am getting there with a uge grin on my face.
I wondered if any of you wonderful lot can recommend any that you listen to or am I just a sad case? I think comedy stuff is more my scene but I'm willing to listen to SF stuff too!
Ta,
Pete.
I too listen to Gervais on my way to work, that is until recently when I have been getting a 'format error' on my mp3 player when trying to listen to it.
Probably a fault with the player as it's had a few knocks and was giving me trouble in the past.
So, anyone suggest a cheap mp3 player replacement, need only be 512mb or whatever, don't need to convert my entire record collection to mp3 just at the moment.
Samsung do a cheap, very groovy USB stick MP3 player, the YP-U1. I'd totally recommend it, with the caveat that you'll need to recharge fairly frequently (not a problem for me, it recharges while plugged in to my laptop) and it doesn't have a radio.
The Sandisk 1gb player is pretty good too.
Hi Pete,
No podcast recommendations, but if you've only just come across those podcasts, it's worth checking out www.xfm.co.uk, which has their old shows.
It's very much in the same vein as the podcasts, although I would say better because there's a bit more story of Karl growing up in Manchester, and it's a bit more varied rather than just Monkey News.
Cheers
Steve
I've had trouble with the Gervais podcasts too, I suspect its to do with the lowish 56k bitrate. My (Creative Zen) player refuses to load anything lower than 64k for some reason.
I listen to 3 other main podcasts :-
Pipeline Comic Book Podcast - A short weekly review of upcoming comic releases (never mentions 2k sadly!)
Engadget - premiere show for gadget, gizmo & computer news
Ogrecave - good irregular podcast on rpg's & tabletop miniature games
I should also mention that I toyed with the idea of doing a 2k related podcasdt a while-ago (got as far as trying to rope the long-suffering PVS into it!) but lack of time, expertise & frankly ability did for me alas.
Someone should give it a go, I reckon Gavin at 2k review is best placed......
I mean instead of reading interviews with creators, lets hear 'em !! Instead of reading reviews, lets listen to reviewers bicker & squabble over the strips on our earphones.
I keep toying with podcasting, once I get my new iLife '06 and if I can get myself the time and I can find a couple of other 2000AD creator bods with iChat (and the time, again) I'd like to do some sort of 200ad related podcast interviewy type thing.

Yeh, according to the recent Steve Jobs keynote, Apple's Garageband software & the new i-Life will make it ridiculously easy to make & publish podcasts.
Shame I have a knackered old PC & no prospect of getting a new one :(
Yeah cheers Steve. I got a DVD with all the XFM shows on and they were hillarious. Pilkinton is God!
Pete.
Lots of people are moaning about having to buy iLife 06 at full price instead of an upgrade price, but I'm kind of sitting on the fence myself.
On one hand, it's fucking annoying to be sold, by Apple, iLife 05 last week and be told this week that it's being upgraded and you'll have to pay the full price again if you want it (and the only exceptions that they're making are for people who purchased 05 within 24 hours of 06 coming out). On the other hand, GarageBand alone has got to be worth shelling out 50 quid for- never mind the rest of the stuff that comes with it.
Still seems a bit naughty though.
There's also the arguement that it's been bleeding obvious for anyone that does any research at all into what they're buying that iLife 06 would be out when it was.
And that doesn;t count Apples cock up on the early web-site posting.
Anyway, I'm liking my annual iLife sub...
Dan
That's not really the point though, is it? If you've just spent five grand on a new Mac that boasts "iLife pre-installed", you'd be a bit pissed off to find a newer version out a week later and that you've got to pay for it seperately. You've just shelled out for a brand new Mac and Apple can't even bung you the latest software? Poor.
Personally, I've had fair use out of 05 and I don't think the price tag's too hefty for what you get, so I'll probably upgrade.
What's all this about an annual iLife sub then?
I just find it strange that anyone buys a new mac between January and MacWorld. After all, who decides they're going to go out and but a new computer without doing some research...
The "annual iLife sub" is a small dig at a fact that there's been a new version of iLife each year at Macworld. Hence your ?55 is more-or-less an annual charge.
Well worth it tho' ;-)
To be fair, I did quite a bit of research when I made the switch from PC last year- but I never came accross MacWorld (and I'm guessing it's a bit like the motor show for Macs or something) . I certainly wouldn't have assumed that iLife would be updated every January any more than I'd expect a new version of Photoshop every year.
I find it equally strange that anyone would assume that 'research' would include every nuance of Apple's marketing strategy!
"So, anyone suggest a cheap mp3 player replacement..."
Of all places, Kwik Save have a 1GB Medion MP3 player with built in card reader for ?25 at the moment. It's marked down from around ?50.
I've got a Medion MP3 player (different model), and it's pretty solid, so it should be OK.
