Title: Time for a pint. Anyone for a Feb McShed?
Post by: Tiplodocus on 27 January, 2006, 06:01:11 AM
I fancy getting ratted and talking about comics.

In Scotland.

Probably Glasgow but I swing both ways these days so Edinburgh might also be doable.

Anybody fancy it?

I suggest a Friday or a Saturday evening and for once, I think my calendar is fairly free.

So start suggesting dates please.
Title: All Star Superman and Batman
Post by: Tiplodocus on 27 January, 2006, 06:14:24 AM
I'm up to Issue 2 of Supes and 3 of Batman.

This is fairly spoiler free.

I'm enjoying them both but for pretty different reasons.

I can't quite believe just how good it is to read Grant Morrison getting his hands on DCs Crown Jewel and he's done a fabulous job. Even Issue 2 which is pretty much talking heads is positively brimming with ideas and twists.

And top marks to the art team of Quietly and Grant  - I find the colouring absolutely fabulous.  There's a brilliant understated splash (if you can have such a thing) of the Fortress of Solitude and the colours in the sky in the background are absolutely perfect. I think a less confident person might have overdone it and plastered the whole sky with colour but this just looked beautiful and believable.

All Star Batman is diametrically opposed to this - it's all in your face, decompressed to the max (six pages of our bountifully breasted, big buttocked heroine getting hacked off before erupting) and, worth pointing out more than once, features women whose breasts are larger than their head.

I don't buy many American comics so it actually makes a happy change for me to see muscular (and so detailed) art from Jim Lee.

Miller seems to be writing almost as a parody of himself but I still like his harder than hard boiled schtick and he does come up with gems like what happens to the newspaper when shhh-you-know-who gets annoyed.  Not sure how this is all going to hang together though.

The last thing I read before this was THE FILTH and WE3 so my head is still swimming from the contrast...

Love to.

Any Friday or Saturday would be great.  I think the Trout is due to spawn round about then so it might be worth setting a date early-ish in the month?  How about the 10th?

Well, I think it should be in Edinburgh, and since I'm 'famed'(copyright, Edge magazine) then that's that settled then.

Gagh! I've taken the pledge, I'm afraid.

Sproglet's not due until the end of March, but I've been drinking ludicrous amounts lately and I've been feeling generally shit.

I'll keep an eye out here, in the hope I can come along for a sob! Coke...

Will I be the party poop who points out that the Burke & Hare is a titty pub and part of Edinburgh's notorious 'Pubic Triangle'?

I'm no a prude but I did splutter in my pint when local bottom feeders handed their pints to the now nude dancing lady so she could dip her, er, ladies area in the beer for (I imagine) flavour enhancement.

The ladies are the rough side of heroin chic and somewhat abrasive to those not constantly having a private grind.

In short if it's there I'm in.

Dunno about Edinburgh's venues. They're all the same to me. Somewhere near a station would be good.

As for the day, as there are a few who can't do the 11th how about the 18th?

Title: Re: Time for a pint. Anyone for a ...
Post by: The Enigmatic Dr X on 08 February, 2006, 08:30:22 PM
Gah! My earlier post seems to have vanished. Bet it turns up in a minute. Anyway...

It may seem a daft question, but is anyone from Edinburgh actually going? I know the Dudley, The Satanist, Tiplodocus and myself hail from Glasgow. We'd look sheepish if all the attendees travelled to Edinburgh from Glasgow!

As no venue is confirmed, would we better to move to the real capital, or do you want to stick to tourist town?

If we are going to Edinburgh, does anyone fancy meeting on a train? They leave from Glasgow Queen Streey every 15 minutes and take 50 minutes. I'll be getting on at Croy, the first stop outside Glasgow for trains that leave on the hour and half hour.

When do we meet? Early doors (3 or 4 - good for those wanting a pizza or getting a train back) or after dinner (7.30?)

The Guildford is a very nice little boozer and ideal for such a gathering given its ale-based charms and proximity to the station.

Other nice places in the general vicinity woud be the Cafe Royal or The Doric.
Title: Re: Time for a pint. Anyone for a ...
Post by: Tiplodocus on 09 February, 2006, 04:50:19 AM
Guildford arms is nice enough. Close to my work.

I actually only suggested Edinburgh originally because I thought it might be a Friday night and I could pop in after work.

But I quite like the idea of the earlier start and meet in Edinburgh - that way I'll have had more than a couple of hours in the pub before sprinting off for the 10pm train home to Glasgow.

But I'd be happy in Glasgow or Edinburgh - it really depends how many people from each of these bastions of culture are attending.

Have I been indecisive enough yet?

Post by: The Enigmatic Dr X on 09 February, 2006, 05:53:04 AM
I have no strong views either, but if it is a Sat in Edinburgh then I'd rather it was an earlier meet so as to maximise my drinking time.

No, I don't get out that often. When I do get a pass-out I need to maximise its use.

Huff here in Edinburg,
but don't count me in, as there is trouble brewing back at the ranch and the chances of me having a carefree Saturday supping ale are riding off into the distance like a weegee fi a bar of soap.
If I remember right, it was the lumpy GRennie who thought Edinburg would be a good spot to join up.

Ok so here's a list worked out from the above....

Tips - Glesga(ish)
Duds - Glesga
Dr X - Glesga(ish)
Grennie - Edinbru (I've heard tales he likes a bevvy but would he actually turn up?)
YT-2  - ? (I think anither Sassenach but don't know where he's staying)
Cosh - ? (I'll guess Glesga, feel free to prove me wrong)
Buttonman - ? (I'll guess Edinbru , again I'm no doubt wrong)
Satanist - Glesga

Soooooo, unless someone pipes up I'll take the bull by the proverbials and say back tae Auctioneers...unless anyone objects...as y'know...I don't want to be the one who actually decides anything.

;-D

"Buttonman - ? (I'll guess Edinbru , again I'm no doubt wrong) "

You are indeed wrong - I'm Stephen Watson, Paisley of letters page fame!

Auctioneers in Glasgow would suit me better (if the titty bar has definitely been discounted). Not sure if I want to commit though as my only experience of Fandom was at a Star Trek convention on 17/07/1993 (still have the programme!) and that's something that took therapy to get over!

What is the protocol? Do we recognize each other by a secret sign or will it be sadly obvious at which table the fanboys lurk?!

There can't be that many mohicans in a pub. Just go up to the first one you see and say:

"Excuse me, are you a comic reading devil worshipper?"

I'm sure there'd be no problem if you make a mistake.

It's my dark secret. The trick is to hide the piles of 2000AD under a few bestiality/scat porn mags. They seem to think that's less weird.

It looks like The Auctioneers in Glasgow on Saturday night then?

Now, if we can work out the time to meet in less than ten posts, I shall be amazed.

That's John McShane of AKA Comics.  He got most of my back progs when I was a pauper student.  I found out we had an acquaintence in common, the utterly delectable comedienne Fran Healy.

Improbably it also turns out that GRENNIE went to school with a good mate of mine (and his utterly delectable sister - Musselman's Law is true).  In fact, this chap gave me his Issue 1 and 3 of 2000AD because he knew I was such a fan and had lost mine.  I bet he'd never have guessed that on e of his schoolmates was now one of the key writers...

I enjoyed myself quite a lot which probably means I was a crashing bore to the rest of you.

So apologies for that but it was nice to meet up.

We should do it again some time.
