Title: case files 03
Post by: auxlen on 15 March, 2006, 04:06:29 PM
Jumping the gun a bit probably but any dates on when case files 03 is 'intended' to be out?

According to the man I spoke to in Waterstones the other day he had v3 in the stock room waiting to be put out, so soonish. Unless he's a liar.

On a similar note, anyone know if it will include 'The Judge Child'? Theoretically, this book should run up to prog 170, and TJC begins around 156. Or can we just expect a shorter book this time?

Shorter, I think, if I remember the Amazon listings correctly.

Awwww! I love the really chunky first two, they look shit hot next to the complete akira books on my shelf.

Amazon say 240pp for Case Files Vol. 3, then back up to 336pp for Vol. 4. I had taken a stab at the contents of the Case Files series a few months back & I seem to remember that the problem with sizes was that including The Judge Child in Vol. 3 meant it grew to over 400 pages, then left you with a problem fitting in the next batch of shorter stories before the Apocalypse War saga.

The things people do to avoid having to work.

As noted, vol 3 = 240 pages and vol 4 = 336.

Stick in a few covers and 03 takes you right to the eve of the Judge Child Quest, but that's when it starts to get complicated. 05 could be either a very short volume (stopping with The Hotdog Run) or a very long one (including the Apocalypse War would take it to at least 400 pages.)

There are two other possibilities. First, 05 includes Block Mania but not the Apocalypse War: a perfect solution for the publisher, but probably not so popular with the fans. Second option is use the extra pages in 04 and 05 to reprint a load of the stories from the annuals which have built up by this point, then have 06 run from Block Mania right through to Destiny's Angels. This would make it probably the single greatest comic collection ever released.

I notice Jonathan O hasn't been on the board much of late. Perhaps he could drop some hints? Or maybe he just likes to have an occasional chortle at the speculators.

He posted on the Slaine thread just the other day. I think he prefers to come onsite when he has some actual news and update threads accordingly rather than hang around speculating. I reckon this is a bridge he'll burn when he comes to it. Still...I'm all signed up and going to be buying the whole kit and case file caboodle.

I certainly hope volume 04 is full of bonus stories from the annuals, but it's a shame they didn't take the opportunity to beef up volume 03's page count with them.

'then have 06 run from Block Mania right through to Destiny's Angels. This would make it probably the single greatest comic collection ever released'

Ha! You're right there man! I've just thought actually - Once the Case Files get up to 'City of the Damned' and (fingers crossed) 'Dead Man/Tale of the Dead Man', and with a 'Hunting Party' collection due soon, I'll finally own every single dredd epic!

I am seeing the unlicky Mr Oliver tonight, so I shall try to wangle an answer out of him.  I need to know these things as in recent years I have bought The Cursed Earth, Day the Law Died, Judge Child, Block War and Apoclypse War collected editions, so I want to know how much more I get for mah muhnee!

I'm really looking forward to Files 04 so that I can send my own Judge Child collection to a new home.  On the other hand, mine is the horribly-colorized American-size collection, so I'll have to be careful which home I send it to.  It has the potential to scare people away...

And I'm excited because I'm mere quarters away from reading these mega epics for the first time ever.

Yay for Casefiles!

(*Hopes Vol.2 hits the States next Wendsday*

"The Cursed Earth" come to papa!)

>Jonathan! FEAR! THAT! MADE! MILWAUKEE! FAMOUS!

I'd love to see some Case Files editions that just reprint annual and special stories in order but as many are colour I'm not sure how they'd compare price wise to the B&W ones being produced.
Read through case files #2 last week and it was great to have The Cursed Earth & The day The Law Died in one volume.

Jonathan O has been a busy droid. Sorry, don't usually talk about myself in the third person but I haven't had my coffee yet. Anyhew, Case Files 3 is Progs 116-154, Case Files 4 is Progs 156-206.

Cheers

Are there any plans to include annual stories and those from specials at any point, even in glorious black and white? Although these would likely make for good EE fodder, it'd be neat to have them in a "supplementary" volume for the case files, or just tacked on to volume x.

Thanks for the update regarding CF3 and CF4!

What happened to prog 155?

That'll be because there's no Dredd story in 155, although being picky myself, ending Casefiles 4 with Prog 206 will cut Unamerican Grafitti in half. ;)

Judge Dredd case files 2 is at no. 375 in the amazon sales rank, that's pretty darn good isn't it?  Might have been more earlier.

It's still at #3 in Forbidden Planet, London (and Dredd books have an "end" at Borders on Oxford Street); no copies of Case Files #01 at FP either, so it must be selling pretty well. Great!

Case Files 03 has landed. Picked it up from Forbidden Planet this afternoon.

Not had a chance to look through it yet, but initial impressions are that it's a bit of a scrawny volume alongside the behemoths of 1 & 2.

I don't know if it's a result of the success of the Case Files, but I also noticed that FP Glasgow have dramatically expanded the space afforded to 2000AD and the Meg. There's now one whole shelf with Progs right back to 1450. Surely an encouraging sign?

"There's now one whole shelf with Progs right back to 1450. Surely an encouraging sign?"

Not if they represent a massive heap of unsold progs - a 'sold out' sign would be far more pleasing. But then how would you get new/floating readers? Depends on your glass half full/empty perspective...

I was also in FP (Glasgow) today. The bloke in front was buying casefiles 2 & 3. He asked when they were getting more of the first and the nice shopkeeper said more were due on Thursday due to demand.

So thats a good sign.

I don't think that's the case. Until recently, I tended to buy my progs 4 or 5 at a time and, historically, FP only had a random selection of 3 or 4 of the past 6 issues at any given time. So this looks like they've deliberately got together a couple of copies of all the recent Progs.

FWIW, CF3 includes one of the better annual stories...

SPOLIER

It's the one where Dredd faces off against some cyborg nutcase who's set up an arcade that had rather fatal consequences if you're rubbish at the games.

CF 03 the best one yet.
Vienna's not the greatest of stories and takes over 20 years for the continuity to be sorted out but after that every story in here is a classic. This is where Dredd finally gets comfy in those boots.
It was great to see Monty, Urk, Rodnina & Albert Sherman again.

Seriously, this is the one I've been waiting for.

Not completely sold on the green and black spot colouring where I've seen it reproduced in print or on the web (but then that's not why I'm buying it). The archetypal McM Dredd astride lawmaster gets a big thumbs up.

Perfect.

Yup, it flopped onto my doormat this morning. Definately the best yet (for me) as it contains The Black Atlantic, The Black Plague, Palais De Boing and The Invisible Man. I read these stories over and over again when I was a kid!

Add to this the introductions of Vienna, Uncle Ump, Otto Sump and Judge Death and the world is a wonderful place!

Happy Pete.

Yeah, they're pretty good for the Rebellion trades (apart from a brief blip when Rebellion started publishing their own paperbacks, after the end of the DC deal). That said, their postage is pretty steep, but if you're buying a book at a time you'll probably still only pay cover price to get the book + shipping. My copy of Case Files 3 should be here today or tomorrow if my usual experience with them holds true.

:: Whoah, that green's a bit garish. Does it look as bright
:: in print?

Nope -- it's much subtler. I guess the green here is down to the CMYK-to-RGB conversion going a bit wonky.

:: The Book Depository haven't let me down yet)

Lucky you. They sent me totally the wrong book recently. So, I emailed them using Amazon's online facility. Then I emailed the address on their delivery slip. Then I did both again, for a second time. (And, no, I wasn't be totally impatient?this was over the period of two weeks.)

I've so far received no responses and will therefore be trying to get a refund via Amazon's procedures. Frankly, I will never use TBD again?the service is fine if you get what you ordered, but?in my case at least?customer service is totally non-existent if they screw up.

:: That said, their postage is pretty steep

With my last order, I figured out what they do: the company sells books at a loss or break-even, and then whops huge postage charges to get the profit. I suspect Amazon's cut comes from the sale price rather than the P&P...

This was in my comic shop today but I'm trying to save money. My comic shop man used subtle persuasion techniques on me when I said I'd still not read one and two yet - "But you've bought 'stop' and 'get ready', it's 'Go!' theat's the exciting part!"

That's pretty funny, although that cunning technique will require refinement when the Case Files 04 book arrives later this year!

Numero 3 is great. They seem to be selling out pretty quick in London, but Borders seem to have them in stock, for all you thrill junkies.
I'd like to see all the B&W Annual stories included (I can see the obvious repo problems with the painted ones...), and Covers, Pinups, and Starscans.

The series is going to hit said problems soon enough anyway, when Dredd starts having two colour pages per episode. Frankly, even taking into account the ropey reproduction, I'd still be very happy to see all of the annual and special stories make an appearance in a "bonus" section.

When did that start? From a quick look at Funt's index pages, it looks like Dredd moves to the centre pages at the start of The Judge Child. Which is volume 4.

Dredd had already started to get the centre pages well before The Judge Child. Many of the Cursed Earth and episodes set on Luna-1 have some great colour double page spreads.

Picked up a copy from F.P. on Shaftesbury Avenue... they had a few copies left.

Lovely looking books, but not read any of them yet - still working through the Rogue Trooper books!
