Title: Getting rooted?
Post by: Floyd-the-k on 14 July, 2006, 07:28:12 AM
I read a disturbing article about rootkits today. It said that no online banking is safe and that the only way to avoid having some ratbag rob your bank account online is to go offline and use a chequebook.
What do you IT savvy types think?

Life's too short to live in fear all the time, but I think you just have to be careful, by which I mean any of the following...

- use a Firewall
- use Anti-Virus
- use Anti-Spyware
- keep your MS Updates up-to-date
- be aware of, and don't be taken in by, 'phishing'
- don't use music CDs from Sony

Trouble is, that's more than enough for an IT enthusiast. Goodness knows how the layman manages...!

I once read a spokesman for internet banking security saying it's completely safe - but she wouldn't use it herself

The trick is to keep a minimal amount in an account for online bill paying etc, keep the large sum of money, the 'rainy day' stuff in an account that you never touch online.

Have your bank transfer 2 thirds or whatever of you weekly income into the big account, leaving you with enough for bills, eftpos etc.

Whilst this wont stop bandits, they're after accounts with thousands in them, not $373 in someones savings account for the shopping!

It actually happened to the son of a lady I was working with recently, he got $40 000 for a car he was about to buy but then it got stolen in 3 big chunks over 12 hours. To the banks credit, he got it back within 2 weeks.

I use anti spyware, but none of the other things. Oh and I use SeaMonkey (kind of like Mozilla). How do I get those other things?

yours wondering wether to panic or just use his cheque book
