I was thinking this morning about all the people on the site and wondered how many are in the creative industry, i.e. designers, illustrators, writers web etc.
I for one am a graphic designer and was greatly influenced by 2000AD and in a way see comics as a foundation for why my career has gone in this direction.
Anyone else?
Another graphic designer here.
Not sure if 2000ad ever influenced my choice of profession, but it certainly influenced the arty side of me and got me drawing, which may have had some impact.
Web designer/journo here. I doubt I was really influenced by 2000 AD in any way, though.
Im also a designer of sorts..kinda
and a wannabe illustrator
Id say the reason I first started drawing is due to 2000ad
My work is not influenced by 2000ad in any way, but I do consider myself to be the most creative person on the board.
If you could just see my timesheets...
When I'm not chasing people up and managing the finances, I occasionally find time to design and print stuff. Can't say 2000AD directly influenced that career choice, although this forum has come in handy for work on a number of occasions.

If you could just see my timesheets...
Hehe. Glad I'm not the only culprit of fictious timesheets. :)
If I wasn't a layabout post-uni bum, the idea would be that I would be doing something in the creative industry. Most of my spare time is spent writing novels and drawing stuff, so I figure I might as well get paid for it.
"writing novels", "drawing stuff" now bear with me...I have a crazy idea!
how about you combine the two!? sort of like the comics you read as a kid, but more 'adult'!?
It's so crazy, it might just work
:)
My current career is based on the life of Halo Jones (only Book 1, mind.)
Well I'm about to start a HND in Comic Illustration in september so I reckon reading comics in general affected that. Bonus points for 2000AD because I then realised you could actually get paid for this sort of stuff.
Finn Sin
An HND in comic illustration? Who teaching that then?
Swindon College sunshine. They also run a BA for it but I wanted a vocational course. The official name is HND Sequential Illustration but I just say comics instead.
You'd be surprised how hard it was to get on.
Finn Sin
Not really.
Graphic designer and illustrator.

Journo and feature writer, though currently doing his best to screw up the day job in a council press office.
I'm only creative when I'm not at work.
Bolt-01: Wannabe pencil monkey and small press 'person organised enough to put the comic together' and letters.
I'm in the design/publishing industry, and I used to be able to draw (a bit).
Concept Artist in the games industry, plus Ex 2D animator.
2000ad, til about prog 600, was my design bible growing up.
Ah Swindon. Who's running that course now days?
I used to live in Swindon, and did ND in Graphic Design at the Art College.
So, yeah I'm what you would call a creative type, I used to work in games, but I've been doing all sorts for the past year and a half.
The reel's a bit of a WIP, I had a bit of spare time to put stuff together lately, but work's picked up again.
Cheers

Wow- some lovely stuff there!
Thats pretty damn impressive steve!
Graphic designer for ten years, but jacked it in a couple of years ago for an office job where I might:
1) Not get made redundant on a regular basis
and
2) Finish at 5.00pm and not work any weekends.
The money's shit, but at least I have a life ...!
Don't recall any specific 2000AD influences other a McMahon/Kennedy scratchiness in my line on the rare occasions I was called upon to illustrate something by hand.
Oh, and a tendency to have a right paddy when anyone put speech marks around text that was inside a speech balloon ...
Cheers
Jim
Thanks, it gets a bit mushed up to get it to a reasonable size.
I want to do something new with the dino stuff since they're a bit ancient (appropriately).
I'm in two minds whether to do some tooth-based stuff (the mega-city thing was fun to do), but I'm not sure how well doing 3D versions of existing characters goes down.
Still, I'd rather have the ABC Warriors than the Star Wars stuff. There doesn't seem to be much tooth stuff out there, apart from this...
Cheers,
Steve

Is it just me, or does that Kano look like Dolf Lundgren? Looks effin' great either way...
No, you both look like Dolf Lungren
hoho
Great looking head - cant wait to see the end result
Steve.
That is awesome.
Who do you work for now? Are you looking for work in the games industry? or are you now freelance?
Hi,
just to clarify - the Kano model is by a talented guy called Matt Clark, not me...
Larf, I got your e-mail but my response bounced. Not sure why.
I'm freelancing at the moment, but I'm not really looking for games work (all the older stuff on the reel is games).
I fancied a change really, and I'm not sure if I'll go back to it or not. I've got work up until the end of October for various bits and bobs.
I got a bit disillusioned with games work to be honest, mainly because of the length of development time, with no guarantee that work would see the light of day. So I've been mainly concentrating on short projects for the past year or so.
Cheers,
Steve
I'm gonna do the line...
I'm a government artist.
Yes, I draw the dole!
Well I don't really, but saying I'm in property sounds like your a pro-monopoly player.
To para-phrase Partridge, getting made redunadant was the best thing I've done.
Thanks for the heads up Steve.
This seems to be a common issue within games at the moment, long hours and not enough pay etc.
Good luck with the freelancing stuff! Musch better to work for yourself!
M
I'm an Art Tech for the day job and a freelance illustrator doing the RPG/comics/anything else that comes my way thing the rest of the time.
And,yeah, 2000AD certainly had an influence, particularly as it's the only comic I've read pretty much all my life.
Crikey, I think you should have asked who's not in the creative industry...
Used to be a graphic designer, hated it. My first love's always been the other 'creative industry', music. A few of my ventures have done pretty well in the past. These days the bulk of my income comes from djing and I'm starting to dabble in production and session work as well as putting together a solo album of quality tuneage. Got a couple of proper big regular gigs and (fingers crossed) some radio in the pipeline and hopefully will be going full-on self employed in the autumn.
Well, I work on an Actuarial department....
but will be getting redundancy shortly. So I have now decided to foster my creative side by studying accountancy.
Bah.
'bout the only thing I do creativley is paint miniatures - which is tooth related as the first mini I ever painted was the GW version of Dredd on his Lawmaster! I've been painting ever since, and I've been intending to start selling comissions - I've received some positive responses from some of the creative types at GW HQ (where I work has a unit nearby). But I cant draw for toffees!
I have nothing but respect for EVERYONE on here who can draw, paint or etch a good picture!
I'm a Film/video Editor in Irish T.V.
Arriving late, as usual, I'll add I'm reporter who just switched to sub-editing.
It's a lot more visual than reporting, as it includes page design. I'm enjoying it a lot.

Literary critic (official! Now with forthcoming - but confirmed - publications!)
Does that count as creative?
I'm a musician, does that count? Would love to be able to draw though,I'm totally frustrated with my ineptitude with it. As for being inspired by tooth, I actually included Tharg in my thankyou list for our first single but the artwork's been changed since then so don't think it'll be used, which is a shame.
I write books and stuff. I do a lot of graphics, too (2D and 3D), but I can't actually draw very well.
2000 AD has definitely been an influence! The first book I ever tried to write was a novelisation of Dredd's first encounter with Judge Death... I got about a page and a half into it and gave up.
erm...I sell Airconditioners and BBQ's and you've got to be creative when selling stuff, right? aside from that I cant draw a piece of string and when I was younger I tried to write a book(as you do when your in your early twenties)that I got 4 or 5 chapters into befor I realized it was a rubish rip off of something I must've read when I was younger(and pretty uninteligable to anyone but me).
I envy creative types bso I just enjoy their end wares.

I've spent the last 6 years since uni building stop-motion puppets for film & tv. Bob the builder, Andy Pandy, Rupert Bear & Corpse bride among others. My pretty limited drawing abilities have withered through disuse though...
By day: Systems Analyst for a huuuge bank.
By night (well, part time anyway...): Stand up comedian, comedy sketch writer, small press writer (Futurequake, Solar Wind, Zarjaz).
By day I'm a mild-mannered recent Philosophy graduate call-centre agent who feels slightly miffed at that turn of events, while by night I'm a vitriolic and under-(if ever) paid music journalist, swanning off to free gigs and looking clever at all the plebs who pay for their tickets.
Literary critic (official! Now with forthcoming - but confirmed - publications!)
Does that count as creative?
I don't think many writers would think so...
I just read Christopher Brookmyres "A tale etched in blood and hard black pencil". At the back it has a Glossary for all the slang used.
The description for most of the swear words refers to Literary critics.
