Title: Blow your cred.
Post by: The Enigmatic Dr X on 04 August, 2006, 03:25:00 AM
OK, so comics might not be seen as the coolest thing on Earth, and hanging around a comic forum like a bad smell exacerbates the position. Even so, that doesn't stop us laughing at those even worse than us.

So, inspired by the Q Magazine survey this month (the top 50 uncool songs you really like - ELO being #1), what song do you like that'll just make the boarders laugh?

I'll confess first - The Power of Love (Jennifer Rush).

I'm listening to it on the Deluxe Top Gun soundtrack as I type.

Mine has to be
Fill my Little World by The Feelings.

Their new song out sounds like Kliff Richard and ELO!

It just so happens that last night I found a reply to a comment I made on a the You-Tube forum  a few weeks back.

I just found the section with most of the well known Oingo-Boingo songs song on it.

'Stay' I hated this song when it was popular ( 1986, I think! )

I don't mind it so much now.

Also, I was the first to make a comment on that thread. Yeah that's my comment right at the top.

Danny Elfman who heads the band Oingo-Boingo ( Some Soft-Rock, pop outfit really big around Los-Angeles in the early 1980's.) is now the orchestral composer that has been doing the musics soundtracks for films such as  'Batman' ( The one with Michael Keaton.), Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes ( Newer version, Goldsmith did the first movie.). Spiderman one and two, Nightmare before Christmas, and a few others. You would find his name mentionedafter the music scoreof quite few Hollywood blockbuster movies.  With old band he sang the opening theme song to that old teen comedy 'Weird Science'.

I always enjoy Jermaine Stewart's 'We don't have to take our clothes off', especially as you imagine he was pumping loads of burds while preaching abstinence to the rest of us.

Secret Agent Man by Johnny Rivers.

I've discovered something fascinating: if you listen to that song while imagining the video from the Hoff's cover, and then listen to "12 reasons why (I love her)" by My Life Story, it becomes clear that the reason he loves her is because she's a superspy and looks suspiciously like our Synnamon!

A list too long to go into. Here's a sample:

All The Things She Said (tAtU)
Child (Mark Owen)
Crazy For You (Let Loose)
Curly/Blackberry Way (The Move)
When Do I Get to Sing "My Way" (Sparks)
I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper (Sarah Brightman and Hot Gossip)
Automatic Lover (Dee D Jackson)
Total Eclipse of the Heart (Bonnie Tyler)
The Bargain store/I Will Always Love You/Coat of Many Colours/Love is Like a Butterfly (Dolly Parton)
Anyone Who Had a Heart (Cilla Black)
Falling In Love Again (Marlene Dietrich)
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Judy Garland)

There are a lot more. In my defence, I am a pop music vulture with a big vinyl and CD collection.

Can't touch this

Can't touch this (oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Can?t touch this (oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Can't touch this

My, my, my, my music hits me so hard
Makes me say oh my Lord
Thank you for blessing me
With a mind to rhyme and two hyped feet
Feels good when you know you're down
A superbowl homeboy from the Oaktown
And I'm known as such
And this is a beat uh you can't touch

(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
I told you homeboy, can't touch this
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Yeah, that's how we livin' and ya know,
can't touch this
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Look in my eyes man, can't touch this
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
You know let me bust the funky lyrics, you can?t touch this

Fresh new kicks and pants
You got it like that now you know wanna dance
So move out of your seat
And get a fly girl and catch this beat
While it's rollin' hold on
Pump a little bit and let me know it's going on
Like that, like that
Cold on a mission so fall on back
Let 'em know that you're too much
And this is a beat uh you can't touch

(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Yo I told you, can't touch this
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Why you standing there man, can't touch this
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Yo sound the bell school is in sucker, can't touch this

Give me a song or rhythm
Making 'em sweat that's what I'm giving 'em
Now they know
You talk about the Hammer when you?re talking ?bout a show
That's hyped and tight
Singers are sweatin' so pass them a wipe
Or a tape to learn
What it's gonna take in the 90's to burn
The charts legit
Either work hard or you might as well quit

(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
That's word because you know
Can't touch this (oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Can't touch this (oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Break it down!
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Stop! Hammer time!

Go with the flow it is said
If you can't move to this then you probably are dead
So wave your hands in the air
Bust a few moves run your fingers through your hair
This is it for a winner
Dance to this and you're gonna get thinner
Now move slide your rump
Just for a minute let's all do the bump

(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Bump bump bump yeah, you can't touch this
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Look man, can't touch this
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Stop! Hammer time!
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Oh-oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh) can't touch this
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh) can't touch this

(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Stop! Hammer time!

"what song do you like that'll just make the boarders laugh?"

Drifting slightly from the topic, in as much as I'm not talking about total pop cheese, but things people have been most surprised to find in my record collection [1] include:

Fish-era Marillion (Clutching at Straws is a fine album and I'll fight any man who says different!)

The Rainmakers (Tornado is a superb record - big kudos to cd101.com for getting me a copy on CD after ten years of me looking for it.)

Queen (A Night at the Opera/A Day at the Races - just amazing.)

The Godfathers (More Songs About Love and Hate - R&B when it actually meant rhythm and blues ...)

REM (Document - people tend forget that, before Michael Stipe disappeared up his own arse, REM were actually a really good band.)

Cheers!

Jim

And Clutching At Straws is one of the finest albums known to mankind!

So there!

I've got loads that I could add to this thread (as well as my penchant for M). Potted low-lights include:

Saxon - And the Bands Played On
Lipps Inc - Funky Town
Sarah Brightman - I Lost my Heart to a Starship Trooper
Rainbow - Since You've Been Gone
Love & Rockets - Ball of Confusion

...and an album so sad and crap, that I'm not even going to post it up here, it's that horrific. During a conversation yesterday, not only did I lose all my cred, but every ounce of Malchi's respect. :s

None of Jim Campbell's songs make me laugh (although I've never heard Marillion)

Does Bananarama count? I used to have all their albums (along with all of Nick Cave's) and would buy the lot again if I had the spare money

I'm not embarassed by this one because I actually think it's a damn fine song and great for a dance. Somehow it has become "our tune" for me and the missus (though she did draw the line at having it on the wedding vidoe).

What I can't understand is why it CLEARS the dancefloor everytime I ask for it to be played.  The DJs always play it as well so they must think it's OK but everytime it just empties teh floor.

The song?

Mousse T vs Hot'n'Juicy:  HORNY.

Anybody else fot dance floor clearers that shouldn't be?

And I have always LOVED A-HA. Always.  Even when listening to the Smiths, the Clash etc, Morten and his mates were always my favourite band.

Nowt wrong with Love & Rockets, fella!

Not at all, but their cover of Ball of Confusion is really cheesy (the video with an uncomfortable looking* Daniel Ash swishing around just adds to it) and I can't help but like it. I *do* prefer Tones on Tale, though.

"Voodoo Child by Rogue Traders is on the radio right now. I like it!"

I quite like this to. A nice bit of rock pop.

My list is far too long to list here, suffice to say it includes Dusty Springfield, early Kylie, All Saints, Spice Girls, early Britney, early Christina, Atomic Kitten and ever Girls Aloud CD. And these are just the ones I actually own records of.

Btw, has anyone seen Attitude's 50 gayest records? Quite a good feature, with some good choices.

Ooh, loads! Much as I'd *love* to destroy my little remaining cred, there're just far too many to list. But I will admit to a liking  for early bon jovi. And Summer of 69. And there's nothing wrong with Kiss either:)

Tsk, far to many of these are actually quite good records that have may be got a bit unfasionable... there's loads of stuff I like that's in that category.

Now Wannabe by The Spice Girls was never ever going to be fashionable but I love it. And I wasnt kidding about the Macarena - it's and great tune and if you study the translated lyrics, which sadly I have - it's becomes a work of genius.

But one thing I'm actually ashamed of liking is Boom Boom Boom Boom but the Venga Boys.
