Title: TUNE!
Post by: Tanky on 07 August, 2006, 07:35:35 PM
I was just perusing the awesome 'blow your cred' thread and thought it's about time we had a new 'what are you listening to?' type-thread-thing to go with it. So here it is. Put all your recommedations, favourite tunes, new bands, stuff we might have forgotten about and general musical queries here for some off topic entertainment.

Right then. Everyone should 'ave a listen to...
Eagles of Death Metal - Death by Sexy
Simian - We Are Your Friends
Wolfmother - Wolfmother

Let us rock. Or do the 'big fish, little fish' dance. Or gaze at our shoes... oh, you get the idea!

Luv Tanky x

These last few weeks, the iPod has mostly been playing:

Rammstein - Mutter
Rammstein - Sehnsucht
Rancid - Indestructible
NOFX - The Greatest Songs Ever Written (By Us)
New Model Army - Thunder and Consolation

Although I'm currently slipping into a bit of retro-Nephilim phase in anticipation of the gig in November ...

Cheers!

I can't decide if 'Death by Sexy' just isn't as good as 'Peace, Love, Death Metal', or if I've just outgrown the sound.  My best mate bought it for me as a surprise and I think he might be a bit put out that it didn't blow me away like their first album did...

Either way, 'Speaking in Tongues' and 'Kiss the Devil', from PLDM, make it into just about every playlist I ever create.  Which annoys Mrs Jones no end.

Alright then... currently getting lots of air time from me

Mesh- We Collide (Fairly miserable synth pop along the lines of Violator era Depeche Mode only a bit dancier)

Corrision- The Rushing End (Sound how The Ramones or Misfits would sound if they grew up in seedy industrial clubs)

Roger Miret and the Disasters- 1984 (Punk rock by numbers but is great fun)

Those are the main ones atm but have also been listening to Steve Earle, Fantomas, Half Man Half Biscuit etc

Also think I should mention that I booked my tickets for The Living End, Less Than Jake and Dropkick Murphys at Brixton Academy in November =)

I think Death by Sexy's a bit of a grower. I've been
annoying Booga with 'Boy's bad news' for some time!

Megadeth: Is that all the same gig?! What a line up!  I'm there!

I wasn't all that impressed really... don't get me wrong I do like it but it didn't blow me away like I was hoping it would.

Must admit, after hearing the Adam Freeland Fabric cd, which had some Evil Nine stuff on it (and not to mention IIRC that they're signed to his label) I was hoping for great things - it's good, but not as good as the Adam Freeland cd.

That's the thing with the Fabric live series - they're a bit hit and miss - but I can't recommend the John Peel one highly enough!

Yeah I really ought to hear Evil Nine's 'artist' album at some point... the set of theirs I have that I really like starts with their own material.

And to Albion... Skyclad [backslash]m/

Drink Me's a great album, isn't it, Ush? Have you got their last one, The Butcher and the Butterfly?

Seeing as I'm here, I'll stick down what I've been listening to over the last couple of days.

Magazine - Real Life
PJ Harvey - Uh Huh Her
Skinny Puppy - Bites
Skinny Puppy - Rabies
Soft Cell - Non-stop Erotic Cabaret

Tonight's work-music:
"City Of New Orleans" - John Prine & Steve Goodman
"Wonderboy" - Tenacious D
"The Light 3000" - Schneider TM
"If You Could Read My Mind" - Gordon Lightfoot
"Aquarius" - 5th Dimension

And more, since it's looking like another 3am-er.

I find 'Drink Me' a bit heavy for my tastes. 'Taxidermy' is much easier listening. Haven't got 'The Butcher and the Butterfly' yet, but I'll catch up with it eventually.

Well, it's rather an odd resurgence since the demise of Witness - which came shortly after they produced "Under A Sun", the greatest album that no-one's ever heard, back in 2001 - but lead man Gerard Starkie has 'released' a new album in the form of 11 free tracks you can download from his MySpace page...

Mixed feelings about this approach, but a big "Yay!" coming from Birmingham under the thrilling, driving guitars of "The Script" & "The Recovery".

Added to the iPod today and getting a fairly serious listen:

Soulscape - Grave New World

A kind of hybrid of Fields of the Nephilim, with a Bauhaus undertone, Cruxshadows synth/sample vibe, and a hint of Metallica ...

I should have bought this a couple of years ago because ++ SHAMELESS NAMEDROP ++ the lead singer is a friend of mine of many years standing before he permanently departed to the States (not to say that he ceased to be my friend because he went to the US!) but I didn't. Got a copy today, and have been very impressed thus far.

Samples at the link below ...

If you like 'em, the album is available to order at:

http://cgi.www.resurrectionmusic.com/cgi-bin/www.resurrectionmusic.com/actinic/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2eresurrectionmusic%2ecom%2facatalog%2fsearch%2ehtml&WD=soulscape&PREVQUERY=RANDOM%3dNETQUOTEVAR%253ARANDOM%26PAGE%3dSEARCH%26SS%3dsoulscape%26TB%3dA%26PR%3d%2d1&PN=Online_Catalogue_Soulscape_502%2ehtml%23a1208#a1208

Dunno how to get an embedded URL to work, so apologies for the line wrap - you'll need to cut and paste.

Cheers!

Am I the only person who thinks this sounds like a National Park ...?

And, having seen them on Scuzz, thinks that the singer looks like the long lost brother of Hurley from Lost?

"King's X (greatest band to ever walk the Earth!) "

No ... I'm sorry ... you can't type that with the Fields of the Nephilim directly above it in the list.

'The Nephilim' is quite possibly the finest album ever recorded ... 'Last Exit for the Lost' is nine minutes and forty-seven seconds of pure musical genius. That moment where, two thirds of the way in, Last Exit shifts up a gear with the words "And it's getting closer" ...

I swear that hearing the Fields perfom that live is as close to a religious experience as I'm ever likely to have ...

Cheers!

The Cure live at Wembly Arena July 1989 was cloe to a religious experience for me, so I know what you're talking about, Jim.

Seeing them years later on the Bloodflowers tour just wasn't the same. A younger, more complacent audience that didn't realise when the band played 'Faith' that it signified the end of the gig (they didn't play it in 1989), and so sat looking bored or wandered about, hoping for something livelier to follow, and not getting it.

'Last Exit for the Lost' is a great track, but starts off a bit slow and goes on a bit, too. 'The Watchman' is a great track, and 'Phobia' follows it really well. I'd choose 'Love Under Will' over 'Last Exit'.

Oh, and I got quite a buzz out of seeing Hardware on its theatrical release. A buzz of almost sexual excitement.

"Where's the littawl man?"

"Glass flats. Dune Sea. I go all over."

Damn, I love that movie.

See also, Lemmie:

"Used to be, you could go out with a piece of wood, maybe a piece of pipe. Now, you need a gun. All the fucking time."

Damn. I love that movie.

Where the hell is the new Fields video directed by Stanley? Eh?

Cheers!

*bump*

For anyone who ever wondered what 'Mack The Knife' sounded like given a Brazilian treatment look no further..

'O Malandro' by Chico Buarque de Hollanda

'Mack The Knife' literally translated into Portuguese reads as 'Mack A Faca', (no, really) which maybe one reason why this version was so named 'O Malandro'.

'O Malandro' (slang) roughly translates as 'scheming-layabout-ne'er-do-well' and is the title track of Chico Buarque's 1978 'Opera Do Malandro' a piece of work which is partly a response (of sorts) to Kurt Weil and Bertolt Brecht's original 1928 'Die Dreigroschenoper', (The Threepenny Opera) of which 'Die Moritat von Mackie Messer', later translated by amongst others, Marc Blitzstein into 'Mack The Knife' is arguably the most famous tune from the piece.

Anyway, for those of you with a file-sharing account, who like to listen to obscure covers 'O Malandro' is worth a pop.
