Title: Help me buy a PDA
Post by: Tiplodocus on 22 February, 2007, 01:48:54 PM
My old PSION REVO is on it's last legs and I want to replace it.

I'm not thinking of a smartphone (I'm not a massive fan of all these converging technologies) - I'd rather have an organiser (diary, contacts etc.) that will let me collect and send my emails, write word type documents and do XL type spreadsheets and browse the web.  I like using a keyboard (which is why I've hung onto the REVO for so long).

Not too fussed about watching movies or telly or playing games (that's what my DS is for) but it should have room for a memory card so I can stick the odd bit of music on it (I know, I've just contradicted my converging technology statement).

Max budget £250. Preferred spend £150.

Any suggestions or anyone know a reliable comparison site (the magazines I've bought for research seem more obsessed with technology and bells and whistles for the sake of them).

I've been looking for a Psion-tyoe device so I can write on the bus... basically I've come to the conclusion you can't get one these days.

Stand alone PDAs seem to be rapidly going extinct, or at least being absorbed into warren-ellis style smartphones. There are a few phones out therer that look like they might do the job, but so far the little keyboards have just seemed to fiddly.

I also looked at sdome fold out keyboards for PDAs, but nothing really seems to be worth the effort of getting it set up.

So in the end I've just been using a the laptop work gave me.

my iPaq was good for a while, but then became a liability due to virus problems when syncing with the PC...gave up on PDA's after this and started taking notes with a pen...quite liberating actually...although I do lug my laptop around now when away with work (and it's a bloody heavy desk top replacement)!

It's amazing how the market has come on in two years.

(I ended up with a nice PALM but it seems to have died on me.)

So for Christmas, I've decided to get myself something that will do internet, email etc. preferably with a QWERTY keyboard.

I know Jim exudes praise for his i-phone (can it post in comic sans serif font?) but it doesn't have a keyboard which I think I want.

And I know His Lordship RAC is in love with Bou, Famke Jansen's underwear and his Blackberry.

So any recommendations?  Something that will keep me from boredom on my long commute from west to east coast and will allow me to whip up and email scripts to Zarjaz and Futurequake while browsing Godders witticisms on this site?
