...and that Christmas invasion special. Yoincks! This is the first Dr Who we've seen since Rose got dumped on an alternative Earth. After months of studiously avoiding all the Dr Who threads, I thought I'd post one of my own on this. The title is meant to warn non-Orstrilians that the thread is way old news for them, although you're welcome to post of course.
Well I liked both of them.
Runaway Bride was fun. Thanks to looking at some of the Who threads here, I've avoided Catherine Tate's comedy stuff, but she was okay in this show. Various implausibilities notwithstanding (wouldn't a tunnel to the centre of the earth split the thing in half?) and ignoring Who continuity (which I'm happy to do. So what if they almost destroyed the planet by getting close the the centre of the earth in Inferno?), it was bags of fun.
Smith and Jones: Fun also! I thought the Juddoon/Rhino cops were very Dredd-like, what with their instant sentencing and execution. Too much flirting between the Doctor and Martha for my taste, but that's a quibble. This show cost me some sleep as I had to search my kid's room for vampiric old ladies before he'd go to sleep. I noticed the references to Saxon planted not very subtly. I think he's the Master returning, which, given my track record for predictions, means he almost certainly is not the Master. Martha is a babe, which is nice.
anyway, that's what I thought. Over to you
Well, CBC has just started showing them - I'm about an episode ahead of you as they just showed the Shakespeare one. So far it's not been great (thought the Runaway Bride one was dire), but has been way better than the worst bits of 2.
I quite like the lack of Rose, thouigh of course it's a sure bet he'll be moaning on about her each and every episode. And Martha is pretty fun.
I'm hoping the Rose-related moaning will die down. They went to a lot of trouble to demonstrate what a great sidekick Martha was, with the Doctor constantly saying he likes the way she thinks etc
only saw trhe second half of the Bride one and kinda stared at it in a glazed way(still recovering from Transformers earlier in the evening) but quite liked Smith and Jones, was dissapointed the Judoon weren't sontarins(was that their name? the ones from old Who that were bred for war) but did like there no nonsense Judge style. Martha is hot and seems much more capable than Rose ever was. Looking forward to more.

Cough...
Cough...
Shut it, future people.
Caution, ancestor. One day, you too will be a brain in a jar.
I should have added that non-Aussies are welcome but please have a heart and avoid spoilerising it for us . It's hard enough avoiding all the spoilery Dr Who stuff as it is
Sorry - didn't mean to spoiler anything. Wasn't thinking (as usual).
Still - could have been worse. I could have told you about the...
Ow.
No worries, Noisybast.
bring back the Sontarans - they rocked!
So are you guys up to Human Nature? It was rather good I thought.
last week was the Sun one with the psudo-science stuff, all I could think of was how powerfull the heat sheild were on the ship an suits. Still quite enjoyed it though just lacking in something just not sure what. In the next episode grab at the end it looks like Scary Scarecrows and school stuff.

The "Science" of 42 was cobblers, but it always is really, other than hought tthat I thought it was pretty good - doing an episode in semi-real time helped make it pretty punchy and pacey. The solution for accidentally released escape pods being a big lever on the outside of the ship was a bit crap though.
Your're in for a bit of a treat next week, i think.
yeah did laugh at the emergency lever being outside of the space ship, um hope that designer doesnt have any say in ewhere they put the toilets :)
Over all I think I'm enjoying this season more than 2 but not as much as 1.

I wouldn't have expected it from the comments on the board, but I'm finding 3 to be a massive improvement over 2.
...and the best stuff's still to come.
And the worst.
I wouldnt say a massive improvement, but its an improvement, let down by RTDs usual plot blindness and a spectacularly poor final episode.
It seems to me pretty obvious that Martha is hamstrung by being Roses replacement - that is, she is required to fill in the exact narrative gaps that Rose would have and therefore being saddled with a similar love interest angle. The mom who distrusts the Doctor would surely have been Jackie - that was the way she was going wasnt it?
Human Nature part 1 was dead good, although I'm tiring of Martha having the hots for the Doctor. Roy and I had fun trying to move our heads ominously sideways in unison like the aliens did (we kept getting it wrong). Roy thought it was dead scary although the kissing scenes were 'foul'.
I liked the Empire State bulding story too, although I would have liked the Dalek-who-is-able-to-scratch-himself to have more of a run - the poor sod had hardly gotten out of his machine, had a few thoughts before being zapped by his mates
am I the only one who finds all the interracial peace and love anachronistic? I'm not saying that I want the plot to be held up by Martha having to escape tarring and feathering every time they go back to before 1950*, but it seemed very un-depression America for the tough black guy to be in charge of the shanty-town.
Yours eagerly awaiting Human Nature part 2
*why 1950? well I couldn't think of a good 'before which' date
