Title: ebooks
Post by: GeorgeBernardShaw on 03 November, 2007, 09:44:24 AM
What ebooks are you reading? I'm part way through Tolstoy's 'The Cossacks', a charming read, with all of the wisdom Tolstoy shows in Anna Karenina and War and Peace, but written much more economically (and without all that meandering 'aristocrat bonds with the peasants stuff). I'm also reading a Dr Who ebook called 'the well mannered war'.
Does anyone else here have any ebooks to recommend?

as an Aussie, I'm not allowed to use the Dr Who website's comic book maker due to some copyright rule.

bah.

I'm about to start reading 'the coral island' as an ebook. I found it while researching Lord of the Flies

Couldn't seem yo find that particular adventure though I assume and hope it's you're own slant on RTD himself (in which case maybe it's been wiped by the pro-RTD gay mafia who secretly run the BBC).

A good story,  Coral Island, loved it as a kid.  We did the awesome LotF in school, and I had a hell of a time convincing my (otherwise fab) English teacher that Golding was making deliberate reference to the plucky 'Boys Own' characters to emphasise the depressing 'reality' of his own tale.  The fate of Piggy's glasses being the key point for me.  Despite my clearly being an annoying know-it-all shit (shouldn't invite opinons from the floor!), he actually went off and read it, and came back and agreed.  I was well chuffed, and it least he proved he wasn't the kind of teacher that lived off pre-printed course notes.

When I became a teacher myself for a while, I tried to model my style on his - well, a combo of his, my hapless but adorable Irish teacher, and an eccentric alcoholic Geography lecturer.  It didn't go well.

As to good E-books, I'll have to yet again plump for Moby Dick, freely available, and always a treat.

I read The Wizard of Oz a while back just to see what it was like and it was surprisingly OK.

I have just started reading Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Grey. I'm rather enjoying it so far.

Floyd! get on to the court of human rights! the BBC are dis allowing you because you're an aussie? blatant racism! i'm gonna write to the sun.

the story is as follows.

the doc and martha stumble on a ship hiding near a planet the ship is piloted by the judoon who have "guests" aboard.
the doc greets the judoon and is arrested on charges of attempted genocide!
"who by?" i hear you cry...well its a new DALEK EMPEROR!!!!
the action switches to skaro(only the surface was destroyed by sylvester mccoy and the omega device thingy)
the dalek reveals himself (in a long winded but artistic -i thought-way) to be none other than Dalek Caan! who was last seen doing a temporal shift thing. he orders the doc's extermination ...
...BUT! at the last minute martha arrives with the TARDIS (she pressed the button the doc told her to that homed in on the sonic screwdriver which i forgot to explain in the strip but forgot due to it getting late ) the doc legs it and the daleks are back good and proper having been rebuilding their race in secret!

told you, absolute crap but fun even with the limited tools and characters they give you!
