And maybe Muffet from (classic) Battlestar Galactica. 70s sci-fi loved it's crappy comedy companions.

I probably could have worded it better. I started the poll because I'm rereading 'the 86ers', which I like a lot. However, the robot companion got on my wick. I started comparing these non-people who are there so the hero will have someone to talk to.

Hal's an interesting one. I would have said that Hal was a real character in the movie, whereas a lot of the other cyber-buddies are really there to give the hero someone to explain the plot to
