Title: Ed Brubacker's Captain America
Post by: ukdane on 05 January, 2008, 12:19:02 PM
Is anyone reading Ed Brubacker's Captain America?

I don't (as a rule) buy Marvel comics, and rarely look to see what they're publishing me, but the idea that the title character has SPOILER been killed off END SPOILER for so many issues, has left me thinking it might be quite good.

I also enjoy reading most of Brubacker's other comics; Criminal, Sleeper, Deadenders, Scene of the Crime, have all been great reads.

I've looked at the artwork for a couple of issues, on Marvel's website, and it seems quite good.

What do others think?

Yeh its brilliant - the Capt America Omnibus is a great place to start & is excellent value (collects 1st 25 issues of Bribaker run + a few extra's/one-shots).

I nearly bought it, but it's a hardback, and it'll be an age before the next omnibus hardback collection comes out.
I've found the paperback collections for about a fiver each, including postage, and it looks like they have the same stories collected in them.

Didn't care for it myself. Doesn't hold a candle next to Sleeper and Criminal. Of his Marvel work that my brother periodically drops off at my house I liked Iron Fist the best.

On reflection, I've gone for the Omnibus edition.

Hope it's good ;-)

Any other recommendations, specifically in the Spiderman corner?

For Spiderman, if you haven't got it already 'Maximum carnage'.
I got the complete ages ago but still read it about once a year.

I used to really like Captain America as a kid. He was also my best character in the 2D beat 'em up 'Marvel Superheroes'.

Er, just thought I'd put that in.

I've just finished reading The Ragnarok Job in the Strontium Dog Case Files. When they're disposing of the futuristic tech into the volcano, the surviving US airman says: "So long Cap, Bucky."

When I originally read this (at the age of twelve) I would have had no idea this was supposed to be a joke.

I do have a vague memory of reading a Captain America comic when I was very young in which he fights some sort of dragon thing that tries to eat his shield.

Very good series that seems to have negotiated the turgid ending of civil war to plow its own furrow. Worth picking up (esp. the winter soldier arc)

Max Carnage was awful iirc but high art when compared to One More Day....
