Title: Special Covers for Subscribers
Post by: WoD on 17 March, 2008, 04:08:20 PM
I used to subscribe to SFX and if you did you got the cover without the extra blurb that is splattered on the newsagent copies...which looked great on some of their covers.

What would people think of having something similar on the Prog and the Meg for subcribers only?  Would you miss the Tag-line too much?

I wouldn't miss the tag-lines, but things like this cost money, and I'd sooner see the cash invested elsewhere.

I guess it would cost extra doing the two set-ups and print runs, etc.  A nice 'clean' cover could look good though.  Might be an incentive to draw in some new subcribers as well.

I think that's a spiffing idea WoD. That recent contentious McCrea Meg cover looked a lot better in the tiny unlettered panel inside. All they'd have to do is print an extra wraparound cover to go on top of the regular one. What would that cost? 2p of paper, 1p of ink and £4.50p handling costs.

Would have to be reserved for special covers, say a Bolland or McMahon to do it for a lesser effor -no names!- would be like putting a top hat on a turd.

As if my illness isn't bad enough, now you want me to buy two of every prog!

It's a nice idea but really once you've looked at it a couple of times it then just goes into the box/shelf/pile you store them on. Now getting covers available as a4 or bigger posters/prints would be a better answer.

The current issue of The Comics Journal sports a new design, and all of the blurb is printed on a removable sticker. Apparently it doesn't come off very well like, I've left mine as it is...

I think thrill-merchant supporters should get the covers- you stingy, tight fisted subscribers get free comics as it is, and some get graphic novels. Admit it, you only care about your own pockets.
Us, the poor downtrodden thrill merchant supporters for too long have been held back by the tyranny of alien editors and their freeby grabbing subscribers. We keep the comic in the public eye for non-scrots to behold and support local economies. Were it not for us, the whole house of Tharg would be on it's knees....

it's a cute idea but would hurt completist subseribers, who would feel compelled to go and buy the non-subscriber copies, as well as completist non-subscribers

I like the idea of progs that don't have that stupid double logo, or all that clutter that's all over the Megazine covers these days. Mind you, if that meant I could see more of that awful John McCrea cover to the last Meg....

I like the covers just the way they are.

I know this has been mentioned before but I would love it if Wake could be sent a scan of the unlettered cover artwork to be put up somewhere on the site.

I assume this would be pretty easy to do and would be well worth it. Pleeeeeeeeease!?!

Hmm... someone mentioned covers as posters.  (maybe with text graphics, maybe plain artwork "pure")

There's loads of personal/short run printing solutions around, and of course lots of internet "photobox" type print services.  So how about having a service where you could "order" a printed poster of a cover (with or without blurb), with various sizes available (small, big, bigger, bloody enormous!) and they're custom short-run printed out (to a high quality) and posted in tubes?  I'd buy a whole shed load of my favouite covers...

Just to add to that - a collected 2000AD covers large-format book please. Well, several volumes will be needed of course...

That's a great idea - wouldn't have been feasible in the past, but cover art can now be printed realtively cheaply on demand - I'd certainly buy quality double-size or original size prints of classic covers - with or without blurb.

Is there no end to this man's good ideas?

Nope.  Although they do get more bizarre.

I want a "CALL-ME-KENNETH" t-shirt, or indeed an entire bad guys/villains set. Poor old Torquey doesn't cut it on his own.  I think we should poll for ideas as to which villains should appear.  How about a "Gaze into the Face of Fear" shirt to compliment the existing (and now unavailable in my size) "Gaze into the Fist of Dredd" ?    Or Artie Gruber's mug shot?  Or Old One Eye or Satanus munching on someone ("Flesh" T-shirt's please!). Or an ABC Warriors/Shadow Warriors face-off? I actually imagine that as a pair of shirts, each with a"silhouette" or line-up pic, one for the ABC's, one for the Shadows. Or an entire Angel Gang set??! The list is as endless as the 'good guys' :-)

has anyone tried that A4 inkjet paper that you iron on to plain teeshirts? I've seen it in WH Smith, but I wonder if technology has improved since those crappy iron-on stickers you used to get free with things in the early 80s.

If they're any good I may start scanning old progs and making my own personal shirts (one offs not for sale, if the Rebellion lawyers are watching!)

I've done a few over the years and they work OK...but you need a light T-Shirt for it to be any good.  Did a nice shirt with the Bio-Chips from Rogue down the middle.

Do they stand up to hot washes and driers (ie laundrette service wash)?

I may give it a go - I've got several images saved up that I'd love on T-shirts - including this one:
