Title: Meg 271 - Mother something-or-other
Post by: Trout on 27 April, 2008, 11:39:14 PM
Please forgive the thread title! I don't have the comic to hand and couldn't remember the tagline.

It's not the strongest cover, either. I'm a Steve Yeowell fan but this seems like a standard pose.

But there's a cracking end to Tempest, and a very effective start to Low Life. It's back to its dark roots, as Rob Williams says in the interview.

I also enjoyed the lead Dredd story, which is one of the best non-Wagner Dredds we've had in a while, IMO.

I haven't been thrilled by Bob the Galactic Bum, so I'm really looking forward to the start of Tank Girl.

I wouldn't worry Fishy I think most take spoilers as read on issue threads. It also means the prog and meg can both be on the messageboard front page at the same time.

I actual tagline was 'Undercover Mutha' which I assume is a riff on the great, if underwatched, film 'Undercover Brother'.

Didn't rate the Dredd which was instantly forgetable but Low Life started well in an 'On the Waterfront' type of way.

Not sorry to see tempest end - although it had some plus points nothing really happened and the character wasn't established in any significant way. Hopefully his next outing will be more expansive and have some consequence.

Aye, quite enjoyed this months Meg, things are looking up.

Cover - Bobbins. I can't see anyone picking the up the comic 'cos of this.

Dredd - Suprisingly enjoyable after last issues forgettable start. I hate to say this but I always find Paul Marshal's art really boring. It's like he's the filler artist. I wish Tharg would give him something important to draw to liven him up a bit!

Low Life - Really, really good! The start was excellent and Rufus' art was fan-bloody-tastic! It was dark, lively, letratoney(!) and he draws really lovely tits (see Snaked for further proof! Sorry, it had to be said!)

Tempest - A great end. I really enjoyed this, for me it had excellent art and was absolutely packed with Dreddworld nuggets. I'd really like to see it back.

The interview with Rob was enjoyable too, I must admit to getting a pang of jealousy when I read he was writing Dredd, Star Wars and Indy all at the same time, lucky sod!

Looking forward to next issue too as we'll have Boo on Anderson too. Things are looking up for the mighty Meg.

Very nice, solid, Dreddy Dredd there.

My only issue with the Dredd was that it seemed to have four pages of basil at the end.  But that's a minor niggle, I did enjoy it.

Suprisingly also liked LOW LIFE too. Some very nice art and the Union/Mobsters were good.  I hope these turn out to be complex type villains who think they are doing good by getting hume jobs and not just, well, Union/Mobsters.

TEMPEST was OK to good but not entirely my cup of tea.  It reminded me of CREEP where an invincible undercity character shows up and, er, everybody dies.  Of course it's not like that for many, many reasons (not least of which is the brilliant cheeky wink it gives you) but I hope any other follow up tale isn't just more of the same.

I found Bob the Galctic Bum stupidly enjoyable.

Text pieces are hit and miss; Neil Marshall interview I liked, Rob Williams (even though more relevant) I wasn't so sure of.

These pieces with more recent creators always seem a bit like puff pieces to me - I prefer to read stuff where the creator has some degree of longevity behind them (I guess the same applied to Neil Marshall actually but it seemed less of a trumpet blowing exercise because he has nowt to do with the Meg).

Bulletproof may be getting a purchase from me.

And I like Steve Yeowell as much as the next man but felt he was wasted on that cover.  If you are going to have a tagline like ONE ARMED AND DANGEROUS, surely the cover should, I dunno, show the fact that the person is one-armed.  A full figure or action schot amy have been more appropriate.

I always feel a bit sorry for the Meg thread.

But I wonder if more people read it than read the poor old Meg! ;-)

I thought this might be better than Meg 270, but it was as good, no more than that.

Dredd shows that Si Spurrier is an accomplished storyteller with a sound grasp of what Mega-City One is about, but I couldn't see what the point of it all was or why I should care about any of the characters.

The bit about the hands (old or new) made no sense - the diseased remains needed to be incinerated, not resykled, so if any offence was committed it's failure to report a death or interfering with the diposal of a corpse; and if the city can spare the resources to clone a new hand as a pet, they can afford not to prosecute for concealing a dead one!

Having Low Life in the Meg is no better or worse than having Armitage. Without Dirty Frank and comedy this series is utterly devoid of charm. Rufus's first page was interesting - like something from 2000ad c.1979. Belardinelli's Jurassic marine loading platform and Ron Smith's Black Atlantic cargo ship conjured in a single image. Best bit was Aimee Nixon screwing her informant and paying him afterwards. Kinky and bleak in one fell swoop.

Tempest was awesome. Neat that no-one got to see the money. There was no time for Tempest to have saved anyone even if he'd wanted to. Now I have to go back and find out what they needed access to the computer work station for in the first place.
