I got the old Hamlyn collection of The Trigan Empire in a second hand bookshop a few weeks ago, I'm on reading it at the minute. It's been a bit of a revelation to be honest, it's great!
Don Lawrence's insanely beautiful art is some of the best I've ever seen, practically every panel is good enough to be a book cover or film poster.
But the story is great too. It's referred to as The Rise and Fall of The Trigan Empire in the first tale, which deals with the founding of the empire by three brothers. It's full of references to ancient history, especially Greece and Rome, and to the Biblical and historical epics of the golden age of Hollywood. The main character has more than a touch of Kirk Douglas about him!
I'm absolutely loving it! Unfortunately you can only get it in ludicrously expensive collections via the fan club, but if you see the old collection reasonably priced, I can't recommend it enough.
Yeah, i used to have the Hamlyn collection for years, then flogged it on eBay.
Always regretted it.
ahhh...memories of jam sandwiches and the new issue of Look and Learn...where did those long summer days go?

Trigan Empire rocks! I have the large collection (I think it may be by Hawk books?) which is great but it's so big and heavy you have to sit at the table to read it!
I'm surprised Titan aren't doing reprints like their Dan Dare library.
I spotted a very nice, very 60 quid hardback of this at Bristol, which I would've snapped up if I had silly amounts of money (along with the gorgeous Don Lawrence Tarzan page that Malchi kept making me stop in front of). At the time, Satchmo very graciously rubbed my nose in it by telling me about his Hamlyn find. Git. ;)
I hope they are eventually reprinted in a 'less prestigious' format. I would love to get the hardbacks but not at that price

I'll be selling my copy of this at prestonpandioniuimmmmm...unless I get an offer first!
