Title: Final Solution and Judge Death in the wild
Post by: IndigoPrime on 29 May, 2008, 07:10:41 PM
Although my copies haven't arrived just yet, I just saw The Final Solution and the Judge Death book in Forbidden Planet, London. The good news regarding Final Solution is that all the extras are in (two extra one-offs and Top Dog) *and* the trade dress not only matches the chunky volumes, but it's marked as book 5. The bad news... well, there is no bad news. Repro looks good, so go buy it now, people.

The Death book also looked good repro-wise, and has a wee extra in the form of a McCrea-illustrated black and white story, along with an afterword by Doherty.

Speaking of Top Dog, I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of the original artwork for the amazing page shown below. For me it comes amazingly close to Carlos' "Who's gonna mess with us?" page.

I'm so happy!!!

Anyone know what stories are going to be reprinted in the forthcoming Anderson collection?

hurrah! Knew i should have gone into FP tonight.  Well done Jon - sounds like a good round up of Stronts in there - certainly the inclusion of Top Dog and the other bits and pieces is enough to more than compensate for any squeamishness I might personally feel about the merits of FS! Making it book 5 is the icing on the cake really, as even with my aforementioned views on FS, it certainly deserves to be part of the full run rather than a distinct book, and with the cliffhanger ending to book 4 especially, it just makes sense - yay!

Pete - e gads, that's a great image to actually own the orginal of, even if it doesn't show Alpha fighting back!

One of my big gripes in Judgement Day is the ease with which Dredd dispatches Alpha and Sadu.  I know that in 'reality', Dredd would win an Alpha/Dredd fisticuff bout, but I love the balance that Top Dog achieves, and the way Alpha puts up a good account of himself before the issue of who is gonna win gets nicely ducked!

Yeowch! I'm really looking forward to this Volume.

Respect to Jon for a top job on this collected series. It has set the bar way high.

Bah! This makes me even more annoyed that I had to go to the dentist after work and ended up missing FP. It will be mine soon.

I'm not even a fan of Top Dog and don't really think of it as a "proper" SD story, but I'm very happy to hear that they've revised it and included all the extras people want. It's better to have it and me be able to flick past it, than it be the one thing missing.

Well done, it's turned from a book I wasn't going to buy, into one I will!

What cover did it have, Indigo? The spoilery-johnny-with-no-eyes one?

Yes - the cover is identical to the thumbnail on the trades site.

IP: What colour was the spine?
Title: Re: Final Solution and Judge Death...

I want to say a sort of dusty blueish colour. However, the real answer is: I can't remember. By the way, if anyone's rattling around London, one thing I do remember is that FP has money off the new books - a good few quid, too.

Just got FS. I left Young Death alone, as I already own the Hamlyn/Mandarin edition.

'What colour was the spine?'

A pale green.

'Anyone know what stories are going to be reprinted in the forthcoming Anderson collection?'

TBC, but I know that its almost certainly going to be all early Arthur Ranson stuff. I'd hazard a guess at 'Shamballa', 'The Jesus Syndrome',  'The Protest', 'The Witch? Report', 'Triad', 'Reasons to be Cheerful' etc.

I'd really like a comprehensive Anderson collection, including 'Childhood's End' and 'Postcards from the Edge', but we'll wait and see.

Sorry for double posting, but I also wanted to add my thanks to Jon and team for their efforts in putting this book together, (and I include Indigo in that).

I've been waiting for this storyline to be collected properly for over ten years. I used to try and buy up all of the back progs to read it, but was always missing a few.

I don't like pale spines :-p

Re: Shamablla, I don't recall what was collected in the first Anderson book, but aren't there a number of stories missing between the last one in that collection, and Shamaballa?

Some of my favourite Anderson stories, are Traid, Leviathan's Farwell (a key story rarely reprinted), and Helios (as well as Hour of the Wolf).

That's made me think. Once Block Mania /Apocaypse War have been collected, shouldn't there be a post war- Orlok collection?
How many pages would it run to?
Title: Re: Final Solution and Judge Death...
Post by: IndigoPrime on 30 May, 2008, 03:13:06 PM
Mm. I don't really understand the logic of jumping to Shamballa, missing a ton of b+w stories (including Helios) and great one-offs like The Random Man, but there you go. It's doubly strange when you consider how tight Anderson continuity was at the time, referencing past things that we'll now not get to see in reprint.

I've been hoping since the DC split that Rebellion would continue the Anderson series.

Now I don't think I'll bother. It's an odd choice to skip so much when most of the other lines have been so comprehensive and completist. I can see the appeal of Grant/Ranson books, definately, but why does it have to be at the expense of everything else? Why ignore so much other good black and white-era stuff?

I hope they rethink the Shamballa book a little and it doesn't end up as a 'Carlos Ezquerra collection' type missed oppurtunity.
Title: Re: Final Solution and Judge Death...
Post by: lborl on 30 May, 2008, 03:56:55 PM
See, this is exactly why Rebellion should never close this forum. I just checked my bank balance on the way home, opened another stack of parcels of graphic novels I've bought online like an addict, same as I do every time payday comes and then thought "right, it's time to be a bit sensible for the rest of the month, you've got more than a dozen new books to get through now and a load of DVDs so you need to be kind to your overdraft. Only buy food and necessary stuff from now".

Then I saw this thread, and couldn't bear to wait any longer for another Strontium Dog book, so I bought it on my credit card. If I die of malnutrition I am going to blame it on here.

'Now I don't think I'll bother. It's an odd choice to skip so much when most of the other lines have been so comprehensive and completist.'

To be fair, we don't actually know what will be in the Anderson book - I doubt its even been finalised yet.

I may have imagined it, but didn't someone post recently saying that 'Leviathan's Farewell' would be included?

Title: Re: Final Solution and Judge Death...
Post by: Dark Jimbo on 30 May, 2008, 04:05:04 PM
Yeah, I'm aware these things are rarely far from finalised and are always subject to change - I mean, they really seem to have listened to fans and acted accordingly on Final Solution - but everything seems to point to it being a series of just the Grant/Ranson stuff.

Which, in many way, would be a shame. I'm happy to be told differently, though.

"Anderson Case Files please!!!"

Heh. I mentioned that to Jon a loooong time ago and was told that it wasn't going to happen. Then again, I also hassled him for ages about a chunky ACE Trucking volume and a reboot of Red Seas (not that I'm saying these are my ideas, obv., because I suspect Jon was considering them anyway), and they happened, so you never know.

Personally, I'd like to see Shamballa bumped from the schedule and replaced by a book collecting everything in-between first, including the stuff like The Random Man, which hasn't made trades before.

I am looking forward to seeing Ranson's work in glossy lovliness though.
Does Jon still frequent this board? If so perhaps he'd like to list any extras this trade may contain.

Yellow colour of Dredd's knee and elbow pads I see! Like the last Dredd figure (or rather the last Dredd figure was like this.)

Great image though.

I had just planned out a 7 book series, with page counts and everything, but as are such with long posts, it disappeared into the ether. :-(
The basic run down was Book 1 as is.
Book 2 collecting the last of the B/W Andersons, and everything up to Shamballa, including all the annual and specials stories, up to 1992, (Helios, Triad, Leviathans Farwell)
Book 3 collected Shamaballa, Engrams I & II and the Anderson Meg stories up to but NOT including Childhood's End.
Book 4 collected Chldhood's End, and everything up to Postcard to Myself from Megazine
Book 5 collected Something Wicked, Satan, and The Protest
Book 6 collected the "Steve Sampson" 2000ad years
Book 7 collected the remaining "Ranson Years" R*evolution, and the meg stories from Half-Life to Lucid (Bumper collection).
I guess an 8th book would contain Big Robots and Wiired.

Providing it doesn't buckle continuity, a few of the early stories could be chopped and changed, so that the books were more artist specific.
(Ranson, Sampson, Roach)

Anyhow- glad it's not my job ;-)

Nice work ukdane! I see from the current Prog they've gone with a Ransom image for the cover of the trade paperback, which certainly makes more sense than the Ashley Wood(as lovely as it is)one.
It's a shame there won't be an Anderson case file series, but I'm still looking forward to this long overdue release-I seem to remember banging on about an Anderson collection for a long, long time.

dweezil2: I think you missed my point. The above list was just a suggestion. Not what Jon has planned (unless?).
Title: Re: Final Solution and Judge Death...
Post by: Dark Jimbo on 30 May, 2008, 09:37:50 PM
That list illustrates my point well. It would only need one book slotted in between the exisiting volume and the proposed Shamballa collection, and you're back on track to having a complete run.

I love Ranson's work as much as the next man (perhaps more) and can't wait to see it on the glossy paper of the trades - I just don't see why so much is being skipped.
Title: Re: Final Solution and Judge Death...

I suppose if t he collection has a "3" on the spine, then if sales are good, a "2" collection could be slotted in at a later date.

Might cause some extra internet interest too (releasing book 3... "where's book 2?")

I emailed Jon a few months ago and suggested that he look again into the stories that the "Shamballa" book, as listed, seems likely to skip.  Particularly Leviathan's Farewell needs to be included - it's referenced in the train scene in Shamballa - but I certainly hope we see The Mind of Edward Bottlebum as well, which features some very gorgeous Gibson artwork.

Just for a bit of fun, I've put together the following list.(Can you tell I'm a completist?)

STRONTIUM DOG: THE KREELER CONSPIRACY
We know this book is on the plans, running at 190 pages, but what about increasing the page count and including...

Kreeler Conspiracy Part 1 8 episodes (Progs 1174 to 1180) 84 pages
Kreeler Conspiracy Part 2 5 episodes (Progs 1195 to 1199) 30 pages
Roadhouse 8 episodes (Progs 1300 to 1307) 54 pages
The Tax Dodge 9 episodes (Progs 1350 to 1358) 60 pages
(231pages)

That would make room for a second collection
STRONTIUM DOG: TRAITOR TO HIS KIND
The Headly Foot Job 4 episodes (Progs 1400 to 1403) 24 pages
Traitor to his Kind 10 episodes (Progs 1406 to 1415) 60 pages
Shaggy Dog Story 5 episodes (Progs 1469 to 1472) 36 pages
The Glum Affair 11 episodes (Progs 1567 to 1576) 66 pages
(186pages)

To complete the Durham Red books issue a book "0" as a prelude to the current books.
DURHAM RED: ZERO

Island of the Damned 12 episodes (Progs 762 to 773) 62 pages
Mirrors 3 episodes (Progs 901 to 903) 18 pages
Deals 4 episodes (Progs 960 to 963) 24 pages
Night of the Hunters 6 episodes (Progs 1000 to 1005) 38 pages
Epicedium 1 episode (Prog 1006) 6 pages
Durham Red: The Golden Mile (2000AD Yearbook 1993)
Durham Red: Diners (2000AD Sci-Fi Special 1995)
Durham Red: Ghosts (2000AD Winter Special 1994)

Finally, there's the rather large "Legacy" volume, which would collect the Tales from the Doghouse, and Stontium Dogs stories. Some people might not think much of the stories here, but a few things should be noted.
1) It's a large, and complete, collection.
2) A number of the stories, including Monsters, and Hogan's run read much better in one sitting.
3) The Ennis stories might pull in a few more American readers.

STRONTIUM DOGS: LEGACY
Monsters 12 episodes (Progs 750 to 761) 60 pages
Return of the Gronk 8 episodes (Progs 817 to 824) 48 pages
How The Gronk Got His Heartses 2 episodes (Progs 850 to 851) 12 pages
The Darkest Star 12 episodes (Progs 855 to 866) 61 pages
Crossroads 3 episodes (Progs 897 to 899) 18 pages
Alphabet Man 3 episodes (Progs 937 to 939) 18 pages
High Moon 8 episodes (Progs 940 to 947) 48 pages
The Mutant Sleeps Tonight 1 episode (Prog 957) 6 pages
Hate & War 7 episodes (Progs 993 to 999) 43 pages
Back-to-Front Jones 1 episode (Prog 578)
The Birdman of Alton Towers 1 episode (Prog 579)
Chameleon 1 episode (Prog 612) 5 pages
Spud O'Riley 1 episode (Prog 613) 5 pages
Maeve the Many-Armed 2 episodes (Progs 617 to 618)
Sting Ray 2 episodes (Progs 623 to 624) 10 pages
Froggy Natterjack 1 episode (Prog 625) 5 pages
Ratty 1 episode (Prog 626) 5 pages
Niall of the Nine Sausages 3 episodes (Progs 636 to 638) 15 pages
Moosey 1 episode (Prog 649) 5 pages
Dead Man's Hand (2000AD Yearbook 1993)
Angel Blood (2000AD Sci-Fi Special 1993)
The Cage (Poster Prog Strontium Dogs 1) 6 pages

Anyway, all a bit of fun.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I would pay good money for a Strontium Dogs collection as I have such happy childhood memories of it. I'd love the chance to reread and see if it is really that bad.

I'd definitely buy the early Durham Red stuff too.

"Kreeler Conspiracy Part 1 8 episodes (Progs 1174 to 1180) 84 pages
Kreeler Conspiracy Part 2 5 episodes (Progs 1195 to 1199) 30 pages
Roadhouse 8 episodes (Progs 1300 to 1307) 54 pages"

The Sad Case (Prog 2001, 10 pages) will probably appear between these two in the book.  That'll be 178 pages of strip...

Well spotted that man.
Title: Re: Final Solution and Judge Death...

That would push The Tax Job into the 2nd book, which would probably be too large for one volume, although I'd would be good to get the Glum Affair in there, as it sort of feels like a closing chapter to the Traitor storyline.

Be nice to have a 144 page long Stronty story soon in the Prog.

According to Cyber Matt at Bristol, the next Stront story is a long one, though whether thats 10 or 15 or 20 parts I  dont know! And its not due til Christmas.... sob!
Title: Re: Final Solution and Judge Death...
Post by: ukdane on 31 May, 2008, 03:45:40 PM
Watcher: I don't mind it not starting to Christmas, if it's a quality strip, which I'm sure it will be, and it lasts ½ (or more) of next year! A realy "boys adventure" would be great.

In the spirit of collection-guessing, I've just put this together:

Judge Dredd: Necropolis Book 1
(195 pages)
Bloodline 2 episodes (Progs 583 to 584) 18 pages
The Shooting Match 1 episode (Prog 650) 6 pages
Young Giant 5 episodes (Progs 651 to 655) 30 pages
The Dead Man 13 episodes (Progs 650 to 662) 81 pages
A Letter To Judge Dredd 1 episode (Prog 661) 6 pages
Tale of the Dead Man 7 episodes (Progs 662 to 668) 54 pages

Judge Dredd: Necropolis Book 2
(195 pages)
By Lethal Injection 2 episodes (Progs 669 to 670) 13 pages
Rights of Succession 1 episode (Prog 671) 7 pages
Dear Annie 2 episodes (Progs 672 to 673) 13 pages
Necropolis 26 episodes (Progs 674 to 699) 162 pages

Judge Dredd: Necropolis Book 3
(126 pages)
Theatre of Death 2 episodes (Progs 700 to 701) 12 pages
Nightmares 5 episodes (Progs 702 to 706) 30 pages
Bill Bailey Won't You Please Come Home 4 episodes (Progs 723 to 726) 24 pages
Return of the King 3 episodes (Progs 733 to 735) 18 pages
Plagues of Necropolis 6 episodes (Megs 2.78 to 2.83) 42 pages

are there any other stories that would fit into the epilogue that is book 3?
Title: Re: Final Solution and Judge Death...
Post by: radiator on 31 May, 2008, 03:50:47 PM
I would axe 'Plagues of Necropolis' and have instead: 'The Devil You Know' and 'Twilight's Last Gleaming'.
