Courtesy of Bolt-01 and Buttonman, this month's Art Compo challenges you to come up with the death of, or the final panel of the last ever episode of, your 2000AD character of choice.
Funny or serious, ironic or touching, a happy ending or a tragic one, the choice is yours. I certainly won't discourage anyone who wants to submit a page of strip rather than a single image, but, again, it's your decision.
This compo will run until Friday 27th of September, after which the voting will run for a week, with the winner announced Saturday 4th October.
Gentlemen (and ladies, obviously), start your pencils ...
Cheers!
Jim
Nice set up there Jim, just hope the gory entraily ones outnumber the smoking a pipe on the porch ones!
In my typical generous style I'll set the ball rolling ensuring all that follow can't be as bad.
Remember this strip is set in the far future when Joe Pineapples has a new head and the laws that make stuff stick to the ground have been repealed. With no further ado here are the last three panels of Pineapples. Ever.
Unless Pat Mills objects in which case they aren't.
My first ever submission (and the first thing I've drawn for about 20 years!). Be gentle with me!
Ha! I like that. Nice openers you guys!
Blimey, you fuckers are quick off the mark ...!
Cheers
Jim
Literally. Corker, satchmo. Corker, literally.
Death sucks the big one in choosing his potential perps.
I like the feeling of movement conveyed in Bongo Jack's comic strip panels.
Ho yeah. He's good. And fast too. Bike cannona are a testament to his skills.
Quote from: "satchmo"
I quite like the lack of movement in this one as well.
"Are you going to be much longer in there ? "
Must have either died or fallen asleep.
MMmmmmm Pizza ! No Kebab unfortunatly.
Seeing as it's Saturday night and a bottle to the good let's have a look at Slaine's last moments. Remeber he's been swinging that axe as long as we all can remember and there's no reason to think that he'll ever stop...

- nice! - So eventually he DID think it too many!
these are great!
The final panel of the last ever episode of... Book Nine of Halo Jones.

No need to thank me, Alan, just saving you the trouble.
This seemed such a funny idea to me when I started it, but now I'm not so sure. I think I bit off a bit more than I could chew...
Some real crackers on show already - I suspect many have been crafted over time in the hope of just such a contest as this!
Here is the last of my traditional tee-hee trio.
it's the last moments of Canon Fodder as he's crushed, somewhat ironically, under the weight of all his fan mail that originated form just one single, murderous, boarder.
ha, ha,ha1

(so deserves a dreaded smilie)
and here is my entry....so thats how they finally bought it not by any number of moses clones or a huge firefight but by this guy....
Buttonman FTW!

Not quite sure this works on its own. think I'll have to add a panel either side.
No...it works, and it works damn well on its own.
That vcs one is astionishing definatly my fave non buttonman entry thus far

Only had a moment, but this is how i see it.
Ah bugger it, too many top notch entries to worry about dilluting my score! One more for luck...
The Searchers FTW!

That's the winner right there

Oh man. That is amazing.
Thanks guys. As soon as Button suggested the theme I had this pop into my head.
There is another one on the way next week as well...
Made this a while back, but I think it fits here.

I'll have a think about some more...
BOLT That one shouldnt be allowed !
Its too good, AND its too sad ! I am most annoyed about the idea of killing off any of my heros... can't we call the helicopter heros ? get some cling film around the guts, get an IV line & some morphin, he'll be just fine if we can get him on the table in 20 !
Suck it in, Bou! This is the VCs, not some namby pamby earthworm scout troop. You're hit, you're dead.
OK, this may cause some controversy but she is now in the Meg so hopefully you'll all agree that she's part of the stable now (limbs crossed) - and I've been a huge fan since the beginning. Hope you all like it.
That sound you heard was my jaw hitting the floor.
My goodness - that Tank Girl is fucking fantastic.
This is my shoddy effort, totally devoid of any artistic merit. I wish I'd got the font right too. It depicts 'The Death of Judge Dredd' and I have to say, is terrifying...
No, don't spoil it Bolt, its very touching as it is.... sob
Pete Wells....that'll be a sad, sad day indeed.....
LOL
Like the sound effect Krom - 'Ffffffflup.'
Aye. It's a lamentation alright. :geek:
From the mind of Buttonman and the biro of Bolt-01

Like it. It's the subtle touches, the fact he's driving a transit van - very workman-like.
LARF's is great.
I hate you talented lot...
Quote from: "Bolt-01"From the mind of Buttonman and the biro of Bolt-01

Woo-hoo!
He kills the last Volg on my 46th birthday!
Ha! Consider that an early present then!
Wow! That's good!?

Bah! No time to play!

tried resizing original image and the one in photobucket but this is as big as I can get it. Bollox.

Yay! had to crop original image and resave.....of course. Sorry about previous miniature, somewhere inbetween the two is what I'm after I suspect.

That's more like it. Sizewise anyway.
Shit, the first one of those Lobster Random ones resized itself several hours after I posted it, it was tiny. Bloody technology, does my head in.
don't panic ... Ive done a sketch... shall upload soon
some great entries !
Here's my humble attempt... (I still can't draw the shoulder eagle properly, so I cheated and used the movie version!).
That last ones great. Last ever prog, sob!
Sigh. I hope that never comes to pass Mike!
This comp's sending a shiver down my spine.
btw Bou like the Kingdom pic, my favourite at the mo
I wish i still had time to enter these comps, the work on display is nothing short of stunning!
Especially Bolt's VC's pic. Beautiful stuff.
Hats off to all
blimey theres been some quality! i need to get my pik finished!!!! if that is the end of the prog Mr Carrol it will be a very good one!
The most horrid death I could think of... Oy! Stan! Nooooooo!

'Nuff said. (Who is Nuff, anyway, and what did he say?)
Shark!!! That is a hideous proposition!
All stories written by mark millar!
NNNNNNNNOOOOOO!

late entry apologies to Mr Bolland!
Profuse apologies to all involved... (especially Mr Staples).

I'm not sure whether I'm quite getting my head around this compo...
Shark, That would certainly be the end of my Dredd reading....
Sweet Gene Vincent!
Mike, I happen to like Will Ferrell, but that unholy monstrosity has got to go!
OMG, can you imagine:
"I am the Law!"
"oooh, did you hear that?"
Well, at least it can't be as bad as the first one... can it? Oh Lordy.
Going to be hard to pick favourites this month, that's for darned tootin' sure.
He looks like Judfge Cal!
Quote from: "Proudhuff"He looks like Judfge Cal!
Bloody hell, you're not wrong there! I didn't even spot that!
Legendary Shark, I LOVE your Staples-esque cBeebies cover, it's brilliant! Shouldn't it be Judge Dwedd though?
Yes, it probably should have been Dwedd, but I couldn't be bothered altering the logo
Here's another, anyway...

This compo has got me thinking darkly thoughtlets.
Ouch.
Mr Carroll, your brain is full of wrong.
Uh oh...
By the bearded balls of Beelzebub, it gets worse.
Stop, please. I wish i'd not agreed to this one now....
Mike, that last one is so scary...
Yay! Desperate Dan! From Texas-city no doubt.
(Actually I was more of a Beano fan myself. I started getting the Dandy when it combined with the Nutty though.)
Actually, the cover of the current Meg could be Judge Dan - He is the LAW in Cactus-City One!
I've been busy working on my first entry into these competitions. Hopefully I've got a bit more time (the deadline was given as Friday 27 September... although actually 27 is a Saturday... today.) I've done most of the sketching, and I'll probably ink over it (The outlines anyway, I'm only using a pilot drawing pen, no India ink and paint brushes!.) and photo it later.
I haven't done much drawing, (although I did quite a lot as a kid. I wasn't much at figure drawing even then though.) and after a promising start, it's rather rubbish. (Action and perspective is really hard isn't it? Not to mention preventing eyes looking all starey like. I'm hoping it'll look better after the inking.) I probably should have practiced before diving in, but I was impatient to get underway.
Hopefully it'll be clear enough to get the joke anyway.
Hi folks. I haven't posted for a while due to being super busy. And I'm going to pay for the time spent on this but just had to give it a go. These images always start of with a very quick doodle on a scrap of paper and then I end up spending tons more time on the colouring and graphics. Oh, well, its great fun doing them.
Oh man, the tweaking of Dredd's appearance/uniform are the stuff of genius!
Triple barrel lawgiver? Nice one.
I'd better get back to mine soon before I run out of time...
MiniBolt has just finished the inks on his, but It is on overlay paper so will need a careful scan. PLEASE KEEP THE COMP OPEN TILL END OF SUNDAY. Give us chance to get it online.Ta.

What's worth to you, eh?
Oh ... all right, then.
Cheers!
Jim
Cheers Jim!
That's good for me too. I've finished most of my inking now. Sort of...
Actually turned out better than I thought although not a scratch on most of these here.
Still got to scan it in. (Or photo. Annoying thing is the computer I use isn't compatible with the scanner. (Vista.) Which means scanning to an old PC then copying to a memory stick... except both of those appear to have been sucked through a wormhole to a parralel dimension somewhere. I blame the hardron collider thing. Yeah, I know it's switched off, but cause and effect are all messed up when rents in space-time are involved.

)
I'm not sure whether to bother colouring it or not...
On hearing the deadline had been extended I've had a go as a tribute to Massimo and a great strip that never really got the end it deserved... I'm no Frank Frazetta, but I'm sure you get the jist...
"Between the time when the stars drank Abbo Dabbo, and the rise of the sons of Feek, there was an age undreamed of. And onto this, Ace Garp, destined to wear the jewelled crown of Porkina upon a troubled brow. It is I, his chronicler, who alone can tell thee of his saga... Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!"
So did Ace Garp return the wayward daughter of King Porkina to her home. And having no further concern, he and his companions sought adventure in the Western Spiral. Many wars and feuds did Ace Garp fight. Honour and fear were heaped upon his name and, in time, he became a king by his own hand...
Alas, this story shall never be told.
Regarding Mike Carrolls' Entry.Quote
I like it, as I'm getting very good impression of how Will Ferrell would look in a Judge Uniform. Which re-enforcers my opinion that he would make a great Judge Cal.
Quote from: "the_legendary_shark"The most horrid death I could think of... Oy! Stan! Nooooooo!

'Nuff said. (Who is Nuff, anyway, and what did he say?)
That'd would definitely be the end of everything.
critter
ok sorry for the delay and thanks for extending the deadline jim - this is how gene dies;

this is such a good comp there has been some really really nice entries!!
Yikes that's gruesome!
(Yikes? I'm talking Beano!)
Anyway, here's mine. It's not complete as you can see- I did a bit of colouring but it was pretty half-arsed and mostly greys as you can see. It's actually the last page rather than just one panel. Hope that's ok. (I drew it straight on A4 printer paper with pencil then inked over with a pen directly then photographed it and edited it a bit on the computer.) Unfortunately there was rather a lot of smudging. Sorry for the mess. Be gentle.

Sigh.
It's too large. Ok, here is a link:
http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp14 ... ndComp.jpg (http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp149/cmardle/ThisIsTheEndComp.jpg)
Ok, just noticed something else I should have editted. And please forgive my childish handwriting. I did think to redo the text on the computer but I'm still trying to work out how to do it with my new art package. (GIMP 2. ) It looks quite small on screen but clicking on it zooms in. (At least it does on my computer using Firefox.)
The bottom line of the bottom left panel should read "THE OLD JUSTICE DAYS BEFORE HE WENT SENILE." I had to squeeze it in and it's not that easy to pick out.
I'll leave myself more time next time... and learn to work my graphics package properly.
Very funny. That image of Dredd in the pot helmet cracked me up.
Heh, class. I reaaaaallly wanted to enter the compo this month and thats the sort of thing i'd have been hoping to achieve. Ah well, hope next months subject is as good as this one.....
urgh MIni-Bolt your head is full of wrong ! poor Gene deserves to go out with dignity !.
some great entries, despite a horrible unthinkable cruel competition. the only one I actually wanted to die was Bill Savage.. being run over by a bus, while talking about x-factor & getting shopping from tescos. but I didnt get around to it.
next month we need something happy & comforting, our favorites continuing in glorious battle forever weaving us a cocoon of seamless nostalgia to fortify us against our own impending dementia.

Heh, yeh thats
very comforting! I agree though. A lighter tone would be good.
Mardoid's entry had me at my desk laughing 'til I cried - "one scoop only, creep!". Beautiful. This has been a great, if dark, competition, well done to all!
That Dredd/ Dan should be the starting piont for the next 48 hours movie!
Compo (belatedly) closed!
Voting thread up shortly.
As always, I remain pleasantly astonished at the talent on display in these Compo threads. My own entry, yet again, never made it out of my head and onto the paper. Maybe next time, eh?
Many thanks to all of you who did give up your valuable free time to contribute.
Cheers!
Jim
