Title: DS
Post by: eggonlegs on 29 December, 2008, 09:23:28 PM
im seriously considering buying a nintendo DS - are there any good games for it?

I got one for Christmas and it's quite good fun so far.

The two games I have so far are Star Wars: Clone Wars, which is pretty but simple, and Brain Training, which is incredibly simple and faintly annoying.

Having had hand-held systems before, I should stress I'm not expecting too much in terms of game play. I think you need to have a reason to use something like this - mine is a very boring shift I do once a week.

But I'm hoping to pick up MarioKart, on Godpleton's advice, so I think there's a good fun to be had.

Advance Wars!

If you commute like me then a DS is essential! Sadly, the games available are 99% lazy shovelware and kiddy-cartoon tie-ins. There are, however some superb games if you know where to look.

I'd highly recommend the following:

Metal Slug 7
New Super Mario Bros.
Brain Training and More Brain Training
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Starfox Command
42 All Time Classics
Mario Kart DS
Tetris DS
Warioware Touched

Everyone raves about Advance Wars, but I couldn't get on with it - my brain isn't wired for strategy games.

Hella essential (this is mainly a "gamer's" list):
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (prolly the defining DS game)
New Super Mario Bros.
Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin/ Dawn of Sorrow
42 All-Time Classics
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Warioware: Touched
Advance Wars Dual Strike

Really I think the DS is Nintendo's true masterstroke as it's provided a much more fertile ground for innovation and quality than the Wii yet has still crossed over into being a commercial juggernaut. Obviously like Ray said there is a shitload of tripe, but it still feels that this is due more to the rampant success of the platform reeling in more Sturgeons rather than an inherent set of flaws. I'm on my third DS.

Also I should recommend Lunar Knights.

Oh, and Picross is also essential.

DS outstanding
but be aware, hitting stores soon. DS LITE,bigger screen. which could make the current model CHEAPER!
and as for games,

Trauma centre, a thrill of fun, really operation on the handheld, ( you have to be over 35 to know that one)
Animal crossing. dont go there, you will be addictited,
heard there was coming a spore lite! got to worth a look.
giutar hero. fun but finger cramping.

yes DS is a great game machine,
PSP good, alrounder, but DS fun fun fun.

of course you may want one of them specail chips, ohh they are naughty! but nice,
wink wink say no more, guvnor, let us not forget i live in SE asia.

Oh yeah Trauma Centre is great fun, and according to a Nurse what I know, is popular amongst real surgeons too. I don't know whether that's a good or bad thing :)
Phoenix Wright-Ace Attorney is one of my favourites too.

Okay, so I bought Mariokart DS on the 30th. It's now January 1 and I've got a gold cup on 39 of 40 grand prix tournaments. My wife has been very patient but did get a bit annoyed last night and felt she had to point out I hadn't looked at her for two days.

It's fucking brilliant, this game.

Bastard. I just completed the damn game, with just under four hours of utterly boring late shift to go.  :(

Oh well. Back to the start.

The classic games are wonderful,
scrabble, monopoly, battleships, and couple of others on one chip, depending the combo you get, but its wonderful, plus you dont need more chips for others to play with you! which is a really good thing.

battle ships with a buddy is outstanding! the graphics and the whole sound effects make the games you imagined playing with the red and blue box set, come to life.(no i did not own the computer battle ships version!)

Mario Kart is the finest racing game ever invented!
once again play with friends on WI-FI with one chip, its scream inducing fun.

space invaders gets an update! the PSP version is solid, but the ds version really takes you back to the old skool.dont even bother to show it your younglings, they are likely to laugh till they hurt at the whole game.

kids of today, no respect for proper games.

Can't believe I forgot to mention The World Ends With You.

It's basically the Square Enix game for people who don't like Square Enix games.

Bongo will probably be along soon to explain that this game is in fact Very Bad Indeed but you should just tune him out.

I'll second ADVANCE WARS but I think I preferred DARK CONFLICT (despite it's interminable cut scenes over DUAL STRIKE).

I'll bring the GBA originals up to Perth shortly your Highness so you can have a go on them.  They will consume your every waking hour.

I also really liked Rebelstar Command - another GBA game of brilliant turn based tactical fun.

Tiny Tips loves Zelda- Phantom Hourglass;  "It's puzzle mayhem!" is how he describes it.

Hotel dusk
long slow, drawn out,its a NOVEL in a game format, outstanding and brillant. good story, great game play.puzzles, many elements, all together good.
got it maybe 2 years ago, but even now would recomend it to anyone,.

wife is currently hooked on animal crossing,to a level she chides my son and i about for playing games and talking about.
the irony of it.

i use it for movies and COMIC BOOKS/books ALSO ( HOmebrew)

there are some great puzzle games for this but dont expext an amazing gaming experiance,
its pure nintendo FUN puzzles and cute graphics, you can get big titlles like Call of Duty etc normally they are very dire
it but it was built more for the likes of lego star wars and old top down zelda games.

Wait a couple of months as there is an upgraded DS coming out with a smart card slot instead of the gameboy advance slot, and it has a bigger screen.

Just thought I'd bump this thread up, as the DS seems to be getting a lot of real quality titles lately:

Henry Hatsworth and the Puzzling Adventure
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Broken Sword: The Directors Cut (Dave Gibbons did some artwork for this game, I believe)
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
The Times Crossword Challenge (I can't resist Crossword games!)

Nah, its a regular DS. The DSi does'nt have the GBA slot so its not really worth it for me personally.  ;)

I did'nt think the DSi accepted the R4 card? Could be wrong of course. The new GTA is great though. Pretty deep for a handheld game. One srtange thing is, the pedestrians look a little big compared to the vehicles. Apart from that, its class.  8-)

your memory card or sd card you use needs to be recoded, then it can reload the games and they all work,
you unload, and then reload after you configure your card.
several dealers in these parts are advertising the service, calling it a Softmod, but do not guarntee how long it will hold.
word is you cant go online currently with a soft-mod.i have heard china-town wars not yet unlocked though.

that said they are still not able to unlock the latest PSP the new slim latest hardware version.
perhaps finally the creators are overtaking the moders,

I'll stick with my old stylee DS lite for now. Maybe get a DSi either at xmas or next year. I'd be interested to see how some of the new features are implemented into games...if at all.  8-)

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is a great game. It's in a top-down style, like the first two games in the franchise. The usual roster of running, driving and shooting is there, but the second screen and stylus add much more. Throw a grenade? Use the stylus. Check your email? Use the stylus. Mail order some guns from Ammunation? Use the stylus. There a ton of mini-games thrown in there too, like the 'go to the gas station and fill milk bottles with petrol' one that gives you molotov cocktails, or hotwiring a car, or keeping a patient's heart going while driving the ambulance and trying to shake the cops. Classic GTA, retooled sublimely for the DS.

The 18 certificate is deserved, absolutely not one for the kids.

Yep, I'd highly recommend Chinatown Wars. The drug-dealing alone is compulsive gaming.

It reminds me of a little text-based PC game I used to have. It was played in a little window and you flew around the world buying and selling drugs. Get some cheap coke from Derby, fly from East Midlands Airport to JFK and make a phat profit in NYC, that kind of thing. It was great fun and had a high score leader-board which so many games are lacking these days.

Currently addicted to Peggle: Dual Shot and Rittai Picross (3d Picross).

I was very much enjoying Henry Hatsworth and the Puzzling Adventure, but the last few levels just get irritatingly difficult, so I've kind of given up on that now. It is a very nice game, though.

Peggle on the DS?! My girlfriend will go nuts when she sees that, and I nearly creamed myself! Is it available in the UK? Everything I can find on it online is from the States.

Not out in UK yet, but US games work on UK DS.
