Was just having a think about other competitions that we could maybe have a bash at. I enjoy the art comp that Jim runs so much that I thought maybe we could have a couple of others for those of a less artistic bent.
So far I've come up with a couple of ideas and wanted to find out what others thought and whether any had been tried in the past.
1. Quarterly short story competition :- As the title suggests we have a subject or character etc and then decide upon a maximum length of story (fairly short I'm thinking). People submit a piece no longer than the agreed length. Voting as per the art comp, and the winner chooses the next subject. This could of course be a monthly comp like the art one.
2. Caption competition:- A panel is chosen from the 2000ad/Megazine archives and people submit there own interpretation of what the speech bubbles should read. Pretty straightforward.
Any other ideas?
I like the idea of #2. It's punchy and easy to see (like the art competition). #1 would probably take a bit too much time to complete or evaluate.

bring back the 'win 50 billion pounds' thing the meg did once.
hell bid for the loto franchise next time it comes up. Dredd vs Camelot... its like a sequal to Twister.
Beauty contest.
We all bake 2thou cakes and take photos.

I was thinking along the lines of 1000 word stories or there abouts, so the challenge would be writing something with a beginning, middle and end in a concise form that applied to the subject set.
Hmm, a very low word limit might not be too bad

That's a terrifying proposal Godders.

Genius.
LOVE the caption competition idea... could be a lot of fun that one.
Could we retroactively make the porno thread competitive so I can win?

There was a 50 word short story comp once that I think Brunty organised, my Bison story was tragically overlooked.
Judge Boots. For sale. Some damage.
After Hemmingway. Where's my prize?
The Caption Comp is an old one, we used to do them years ago on the board - great idea though.

That was a good one- because I won it.
And it was indirectly responsable for my Small Press 'career'..!
And I thought the competitions were a good thing...
On a serious note...I have a T-Shirt (Blitzspear) L and unworn which I'll offer up as a prize for a competition. How about one where you have to design the next Mega-City craze to sweep through the Cits?
WoD
I like the short story comp idea - it'll give us typewriter monkeys less cause to be jealous of the art chimps and their talent.
What about an art comp where drawing talent is outlawed? Like an all stickmen comp or something.
I think monthly PUB style 2000ad quiz is appropriate we have some real thrillheads here so the harder and nerdier the better
How about trying to surmise a particular story arc in six words or less?

(Blantant rip-off, I know)

I thought it must have been tried at some point. How come it petered out?

I like the sound of that one. Could you be the next Otto Sump? Also lends itself to visual or textual entries.
The idea of a short story competition sounds fine Kerrin. 2000AD related subject matter only I assume ?
Maybe a 'Finish the story' kind of competition??
could be intresting
I'm going to go with the short story competition and will stick something up in the general section in the next day or so. I'm thinking along the lines of a tester to see how it goes, 500 or 1000 words and a fairly non specific subject to start off with.
There are some good ideas here that should be given a try I reckon. Brendan's 15 minute Dredd exercise that's running at the moment is a brilliant idea and hopefully there'll be plenty more in that vein.
Will it be presumptuous to call it 'The 2000AD Short Story Competition' ?

Go for it I say

I wish I had time to take a crack at this. It'll be a great competition.
2000ad-related motivational posters?
Howzabout a comp along the lines of "identify the story from the blown-up detail" (though a catchier title is needed!) I'll put together a few examples at the weekend and see if floats anyone's boat.
Spot The Thrill?
That's more like it!
That's a cracking idea.
I'll pitch in with support for a "Round Robin" style thing like this (http://huzzah2009.blogspot.com/) or this (http://huzzahnoir.blogspot.com/).
Cheers!
Jim
I think it's a great idea.
And thanks for the links Jim, I haven't caught up with HUZZAH! for ages, and I didn't even know about HUZZAH NOIR!

Oo oo - Tharg's Exquisite Corpse (http://2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,26003.msg448815.html#msg448815), also posted in thread suggestions (http://2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,25672.msg453753.html#msg453753). The idea whose time has come?
Good ideas.
The Round Robin idea sounds quite cool. I wouldn't mind having a go at something like that.
I'm in on this!
