Title: Online (archive) reader...
Post by: Offbeatmammal on 03 May, 2009, 04:12:07 AM
I'm about to subscribe to the online reader from ClickWheel.net (though it would be sweet if the Comical viewer could automagically check the RSS feed and alert me when new issues turn up) but I was wondering about the back catalog.

I was a collector from issue #1 on (but lost the first 500 or so, long story) and stopped when I started travelling (think there are still a stack of them in a cupboard back at my mums house in the UK!)

I would love a way to be able to access the full archive - doesn't need to be a rocket science viewer (though being able to slice'
n'dice by a story rather than read issue by issue would be cool) ... recently did some work with a New York based company called Bondi who have released a magazine viewer (you can see their announcement and a demo of the Rolling Stone viewer here (//http://tr.im/kkkE) and a live collection of one issue a year of Playboy at PlayboyArchive.com (we're all grown-ups here) (//http://tr.im/PLBY)) ... if there are scans of the magazines available and Rebellion are interested I'm sure something really special could happen...

It's probably not going to happen, as there are several strips in the past where Rebellion does not have the rights and are unlikely to obtain them (like Dan Dare), some that would have to be renegotiated (like Metalzoic or Mazeworld) and some where there's a dispute with the creator that has not been settled (like Zenith or Journal of Luke Kirby).  A back catalog could probably only stretch as far back as 1999.

well that just spoils all the fun (and attempts to do the right thing)!

Didn't Judge Dredd teach us to be better than that?
