Title: Scanning and image-size for avatars
Post by: Dandontdare on 27 May, 2009, 06:05:44 PM
I've been mucking around trying to create a new avatar but I'm having a hard time getting any definition or detail in a tiny image. Can anyone advise the best file format and pixels-per-cm ratio? Most images I tried began as too large, but when reduced to 64x64 pixels they were either too blocky to be show any detail at all; or if the pixel-per-cm was increased, the file-size was too large.

I'm not too unhappy with my latest attempt, but it still seems a little undefined. How do I get more detail in a 64x64 square and a reasonable file-size?

And if anyone can explain those cool moving GIFs, that'd be great! I'm feeling very old and techno-phobic right now!

Right-click on an avatar already on the board and save the image to your pc.  Open it in an art program and then paste your image over the top of it and resize it until it fits.  Flatten and save, then upload to the board.

Pah. You whipper snappers don't know how good you've got it (etc). In my day, you were lucky to have a tiny little icon and you were glad to have it. And they didn't have uploading or anything like that. You had to get yer own URL.

I'm sticking with my old school small size icon. It's my equivalent of the 1,000 yard stare. That icon and me, we've seen things on this board. Terrible things. Things no man should ever see.

I use Irfanview (//http://www.irfanview.com/) for resizing. Start with a clear large square image and resize to 64x64. Adjust the Gamma correction (under enhance colours/colour corrections) to improve the quality.

If you want to see the Mekon's face more clearly, consider zooming in on that part of his head.

For animated gifs you need something like photoshop with the image ready suite installed. Then it's just like animating stop motion, you need all the frames or elements ready before hand. It's quite simple but requires a bit of playing to get something that you're happy with.

Woohoo! My very first animation works!

I downloaded the free trial version of Easy GIF animator, which gives you 20 free animations. It's dead simple - this took about an hour from first look.

I've gone and got myself a new icon type thing. Well, you would too if you'd a picture of you done by Cliff Robinson.

That's class Doc, from your anniversary commission isn't it?

I would however (ahem) refer you to your previous post and suggest it's extravagantly large. :-*
