Title: Defender
Post by: OpusAndBill on 04 July, 2009, 03:41:44 PM
Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a PC friendly version of Defender (the original arcade version - not the dreadful follow-up)?

I had a bunch of Atari arcade games on an Atari anniversary cd that came out many years ago (millipede, asteroids, missile command, et al), but sadly no Defender.

Cheers,
Gordon.

This may not be much use to you but you can get it on  PS2 Midway arcade Treasures.I used to love this game when it was out but i found that the difficulty setting on the PS2 version was all wrong because instead of having multiple humans to protect in the 5th or 6th wave you had one or two so if you lost them you ended up in space.

This was exactly the same as when the games difficulty setting was set to as high as possible in an arcade so that you wouldnt be able to play it until you got to a million.I got to be very good at this game because you could slide and flick a 2p back up the reject coin slot [the little box thing with a metal flap/door thing that the coin would be ejected from] and you would get 6 or 8 credits per 2p.

I can only guess that a PC download would be the same but perhaps not as you might get a choice of difficulty settings.

THE best arcade game ever though .

Thanks Hislordship and Peterwolf. Looks like I'll have to keep searching. The retrogames site, and there are several others like it, was a bit of a dead-end - though it did provide some interesting links. As far as PS2 goes, unless I can slip a cd or download onto a normal pc, it's not going to help.

Looks like the options are narrowing down to picking up an atari console and cassette on e-bay (definitely more "stuff I don't need") or getting lucky with a download site somewhere.

Hard to believe one of the most popular arcade games of all time has never been released for pc. Atari, or whoever now own the rights, must be afeared of making money.

Midway Arcade Treasures is available for the PC too. I've got it (somewhere) and I'm pretty certain Defender's on it.

Hi  M.I.K.. That's useful. Any idea if it's the original version of the more graphic-heavy second generation version (which SUCKED)?

I think it's the original version. Defender 2's on the compilation as well though.
