Title: Hive Mind! What the heck was Canardo?
Post by: Grant Goggans on 30 July, 2009, 01:21:07 AM
Does anybody remember that round of trade paperback reprints that Fleetway released in 1991?  I'm looking at an ad in an old Deadline and they were:

Judge Dredd: Tale of the Dead Man
Hewligan's Haircut (the awesome edition with the hole in the cover)
Anderson: Shamballa
and...
Canardo: A Shabby Dog Story

American shops were swimming in the three 2000 AD books at the time, but I never saw Canardo, which I assumed was some Belgian or Italian thing.  Did anybody buy that?  What was it?

It's pretty good, an anthropomorphic crime black comedy, the art reminded me of Hunt Emerson I seem to recall, although it's a long time since I looked at it. I'm pretty sure it's Belgian.
I've got it upstairs somewhere, I'll dig it out tomorrow and put some scans up.

It's by Sokal, and was first published by Casterman in 1981 as Le Chien Debout. It's good stuff, a lot of fun. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a copy Grant, I don't think I payed more than a pound for mine at a comic mart.

It looks terrific.  I'll have to keep an eye out for it, thanks everyone.
