Title: Hi! Thinking of getting PS3,
Post by: Goaty on 11 August, 2009, 11:04:59 AM
Is it good idea?

Depends. Do you already own an XBox/Wii, or will this be your only console?

Do you own a Blu Ray player? The PS3's built in Blu Ray drive adds value if you're in the market for a player.

Game-wise, I guess you'd be able to play as the Joker in Batman: Arkham Asylum, and dress Sackboy up as Dredd in Little Big Planet.

Other than that, there's not a lot that appeals to me on the PS3 that I can't get on the XBox I already own.

The free online gaming and built-in Bluray player are a plus, and there are some exclusives like Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Infamous, Flower, GOD OF WAR III, Locoroco, Killzone 2, Resistence 1 and 2, Metal Gear 4 and Online, and Little Big Planet.  Otherwise, there are cheaper models coming out later, so it might be worth waiting for those, added to which recent software patents made by Sony point to PS2 compatibility coming as standard in later model PS3s (though not necessarily the next wave of machines).

PS3 "Slim" coming very soon, according to the link above.

Was also a PC gamer, but couldn't afford an upgrade to play COD W@W. So I asked for a PS3 for chrimbo and havn't looked back. The xbox has a better multiplayer platform, and MP gaming can be a bit stuttery (that might be my wireless router) but I've got to say my PS3 rocks.

Good console.

Game taste sways me to the 360 but I really like the PS3 too. If it's your thing then why not.

If you like fighting games, the PS3 d-pad is vastly superior.

The directional pad on the controls (D-Pad) on the PS3 IS better than the 360. Though for fighting games a custom joystick is much better than either. I think you can also get a fighting controller now for the 360 though.

Just get the machine with the games you fancy the most.

I really like the Playstation controller to the point that when it looked like Sony were going with a different model controller for the PS3, I wasn't going to bother with the console.

That was a bigger issue than the price.  Speaking of: wait and buy a PS3 later.
Prices will go down, technology will improve, and all the currently expensive games will be dirt cheap.

PS3 with the blue ray player, is great. cheap way to upgrade,

but live is the xbox seller really, game wise pretty equal, some time exclusives are good, and being able to play Dredd on the littlebig planet is appealing.

but to note, in this region, games for xbox are far cheaper then PS3.
but PS3 dont go wrong.
the ROD, on XBOX is standard within 6-9 months, i am on my 3rd in two years. which is madness.

PRICE,is the real factor here.has PS3 got rumble controllers yet?

PS3 can go wrong, I know someone who had one dead out the box. Microsoft will replace rod machines within 3 years, as long as it isnt modded  ;)
Im currently on my 2nd Xbox in 3 years.

And yeah PS3 pad now has rumble.

PS3's do indeed go wrong, one of the major repair centres is near here and a colleague used to work there.  Trust me they do but obviously not to the extent that 360's did but they did the three year warranty because of that.

However , up until the last couple of hardware revisions the 360 was really flaky.  All indications are that the failure rate is less than 5% (pretty much where it should be) on the newer models.

Problem with sending them in for repair is you just get the same problem hardware back repaired.

In the end i just got a new onne last summer and it's been vastly more stable.

PS3s can bork - the one we had in the living room went funny so you had to grab the discs once they ejected otherwise the machine pulled it back inside almost immediately, like a progressively more tiresome inversion of Whack-A-Mole.
It was easier to get 'fixed' than both times the 360 went tits-up, all the same.  Sony send you a replacement console with the courier who picks up the broken one, and they replace it with the same model PS3 even if it's one of the first wave of machines (the ones with backwards compatibility).
A quick tip to anyone getting their PS3 replaced: backup your saves and then delete your profile(s) before you send the duff machine back.

There are aesthetic drawbacks to both machines, too: the 360 sounds like an aircraft engine after a while, and despite its rep as a potential home-burner, I reckon it runs nowhere near as hot as the PS3 after an hour or two.

I'd deffo pick up Uncharted as well, especially considering how cheap it should be these days. It has one of the best videogame stories ever.

I've got a PS3.I don't have many games but the games I do have I play a lot. I mainly play F1, Blazing Angels 2(love the Spitfire in this game), Bio shock and Cricket. I would also suggest buying some trigger clips for the PS3 controller.
Go to google images and type "PS3 trigger grips" to see what I mean. I found them especially useful for driving games.

My ps3 is a lot louder than my 360 after it has warmed up now. It's a newer 360 though and a launch PS3.

Might need to get the dyson on those vents.

Is this the same PS3 that wouldn't turn on remotely using the controller?  You should have got that replaced day one.

Yeah indeed but I wasn't wanting to lose it when it worked well (a small problem really) and many of the b/c ones have suffered laser head failure - i have a feeling that problem kicked in later.  They're known to be noisy but i like being able to play my PS2 games on it and would not want to lose it.

BTW my psn tag is sumthinfishy should you ever fancy some online games.

They replace the same model PS3 when they pick up the duffer, but backwards compatibility isn't going to be an issue with the next PS3 firmware update, as it includes an emulation patch that lets PS2 games run on the machine.  I suppose they knew this was coming, as there's still an option on the machines to create internal PS2 memory cards.

We should schedule a board shoot-up.  I'm online as BearUnleashed, and am quite easy to smear across the landscape on Warhawk.

Still. that doesn't mean the firmware update in future won't sort it if they can now emulate the emotion engine and the GS.

Has that been confirmed with the slim today?

[edit].. not yet buggrit http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/698418/PlayStation-3-Slim-Not-Backwards-Compatible-With-PlayStation-2-Games.html

However, I admit i hadn't realised they were swapping back the same kit, so i can get it sorted (though is it worth it for a 100 quid repair bill?  best wait if it ever fails as it's working happily at the mo and i'm quite happy with it).

A board shoot out sounds ace.   I'll add you.

The b/c will be installed with an upcoming downloadable update for the PS3 firmware - apparently Sony have set a date for the PS2 being definitively discontinued.

Not sure about the new look for the PS3, or the logo - but I suppose you can't argue with price cuts and more stable hardware (official numbers on the failure rate of PS3s was something like 10-11 percent).

I hope so..

this didn't fill me with confidence.

""Backwards compatibility is off the table," Sony America marketing man John Koller told Kotaku.

People buy PS3s to play PS3 games, he went on to argue. "Now that we're at a point where we're three years into the lifecycle of the PS3, there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think - and noticed this from our research - that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]. "

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/no-backwards-compatibility-for-ps3-slim

I'm off to hug my b/c PS3 lol.

True what you say, can't argue with stability and price cuts.  I saw that sample of gamers from Game Informer.  50% failure on 360's?  Personally I think that prior to the Falcon models it was probably higher than that really as all earlier models had the x-clamps.

If it had b/c I'd have got one...until it does I have no need to get one.  I would like a blue-ray player, but I've not got the space for a PS2 and a PS3...and I still have a stack of games for the PS2 that I want to play.  Sony's argument doesn't work for me...tis just a way to try and the put the PS2 'to sleep'...

I play under the name Radsock, Battlefield 1943 is the prefered game.
I've got one of the last of the original PS3's and haven't had a problem with it.  My 360 on the otherhand Red ringed once in warranty and has just done it again, i haven't bothered to replace it yet and dont particularly feel the need to.

Unlikely - it's far more probable they're denying B/C so as not to deter people from picking up a PS2 (which have been selling pretty well in the last few months), much as admitting the slimline PS3 was in the pipeline would have had an impact on the sales of the current wave of machines.  It's worth noting that the guy who says backwards compatibility is "off the table" is the same guy who - up until last week - flat-out denied there was a slimline PS3 in the works.

Title: Re: Hi! Thinking of getting PS3,

Hardware gets cheaper to produce over time, so the PS2 at this point is likely a profit-maker in its own right if it's cheap enough to make.  If it wasn't, I'd imagine they'd have stopped making them long ago and made the backwards-compatibility a part of the PS3 to encourage sales, as the price is still ridiculous.

What is it now £250??

Still pricey I think so I'll be happy to hold off for a while yet before thinking about gettin one.

The son still loves his wii and with games coming out that I actually want to get (madden 10, f1 09, tiger woods) I think we'll just stick with that.

Another argument against PS2 backwards compatibility is that with all the various download offerings, it's more lucrative to get people to buy their games again.
