Title: Hivemind, help me for the love of Jeff!
Post by: mygrimmbrother on 26 September, 2009, 10:44:54 PM
I'm trying to print out some samples for my portfolio for BICS next weekend, and it's all going wrong. I'm printing from photoshop on a Dell studio laptop that's only a few months old, and on an HP C4400 printer/scanner thing which I've only had for 6 weeks. It has worked fine - until today, when I need it most!

Basically, I got one B&W page, then everything started coming out red. I changed the cartridge for a new one - same thing. Tried emailing tech support at HP, but they seem to be experienceing tech problems themselves, and the message failed.

Thought the printer must be goosed, but then my girlfriend discovered it prints fine from Microsft Word - it's just Photoshop! Wasgoinon???

Can anyone help?

Also, my mac broke a couple of days ago, and our TV is on the blink - WTF???

I've never had much success printing direct from Photoshop, and so gave up about a decade ago. Use Save A Copy to generate a print-friendly format like a TIFF out of Photoshop, place the image in another application and print from that.

Cheers!

OK cool, I can do that. What application would you recommend Jim? Sorry to keep bugging you guys (and especially you Jim!)  :)

Frankly, anything that works! I tend to print from Quark or InDesign, but I imagine placing a TIFF in Word will probably do the job since it is (ostensibly) intended to produce printed documents. In fact, it's most likely better suited to printing to home printers than stuff like Quark, so I'd give that a bash and see what happens!

Cheers

Jim

(It's one beer per helpful post, by the way, and I have been keeping count ...)

Shit.

Don't worry, I'm just planning on following you around BICS and relieving you of your beer every time you get one in.

Your kidneys will thank me on the Sunday.

Cheers!

Well, looking at my options in photoshop, I've got 'Save as' and 'Save for web'. There's no 'Save a copy', although there is 'Save a version', but it's not selectable. I'm pulling beard hairs out here!

You're right -- I'm sorry. I'm thinking about four versions ago!

Use 'Save As', select TIFF as format, untick 'Layers' and 'As A Copy' should automatically check itself. You might as well turn on LZW compression when you save -- it makes the file much smaller and has zero effect on image quality.

Cheers!

You can try print PSDs or whatever format u like from XNView

http://www.xnview.com/en/index.html

It's an image browser with basic image editing stuff (which i never use). It won't mess up icons or any system settings.

Alright, you've won me over.  I'll be making an advance payment for services (and expecting a reciept) when I see you at a con.  *grumble, moan, sound of bats flying free from the leathery prison*

Hope you got sorted Matt.

I tend to dump tiffs into Word when printing my preview pages ready to assemble the comics- it is actually a lot better at this than I thought it would be.

Of course I subscribe to the view that Word is Bill Gates' personal revenge on all those people who picked on him as a kid.

Cheers Bolt, kind of got it sorted now, although the printer seems to randomly decide whether or not to leave a tiny white border or not. Unfortunately now I seem to have run out of colour ink, after all those red-tinted misprints. Somewhere, a god of some description appears to be angry with me.

Yesterday was just one of those days where technology failed me on all fronts. I honestly suspect it had something to do with the stress waves I was giving off, which increased throughout the day! Maybe that could be the premise for a new Derren Brown show...

If in doubt you could bang it on a memory stick and take it to your friendly local print shop - if you are doing that then you could aim for a larger than A4 size to show your work off in all its glory ;) After all if you were doing it the traditional way you'd be working larger than the final page size.

No offence, but the several times I've taken my work to a high street print shop, they have completely ripped me off, totally messed up the colour of my work, and have only offered very low-quality paper. In my experience I've also been very badly treated by the staff who seem to consider anything less than several hundred prints as not worthy of their time. Of course, I'm sure there are exceptions, but generally I can't stand the places.

Photoshop has a 'Print with Preview' option which is pretty handy as you can view a scaled image relative to paper size before printing. I find it's less hassle if I need to adjust colours if I keep a layout program out of the equation, whenever possible of course.

I do suggest momentarily flattening layered PS images for printing for speed.

Other than that, mygrimbro' all I can suggest is the bluffers guide to IT: restart the program, restart computer, clean the print nozzles and do all the print checks that come with printer software.

Regarding using printshops, any serious outfit will accept to do test prints for free for you to accept before shelling out your well earned dosh.
