I kind of like this as a tattoo and are trying to find the original artwork, tough call i know. It looks like Steve Dillons work anybody with a rough idea of which prog/s or story it could possibly be.
Many thanks for any pointers
Well I'd say its definately Steve Dillon. The specific story would be tricky. Have a nosey here to see the issues he drew

It has more scruffy lines than later cleaner Dillon, but the chin is larger than very early Dillon - from Trapper Hag, maybe?
Also has a touch of City of the Damned about it.
Cry of the Werewolf would be my guess. Just before he starts to change.
May be cry of the werewolf as suggested but also it could be from City of the Damned or the one where Dredd meets the fat cannibal wimmin or Emerald Isle as those all had very similar styles
Stylistically, it's no earlier than 'The Wreckers'. It's definitely after than 'Cry of the Werewolf'. Personally, I'd say it's from 'City of the Damned', the exact scene I can't remember; in all likelihood it's after the wraiths make their appearance, although prior to Dredd's eyes being gouged out (obviously).
It's from City of the Damned Part 5 page 4 and Dredd is saying 'Congratulations' just after Anderson said 'I got a promotion'. It's only a small detail from a panel but the slightly open mouth and chin cross hatching are the giveaways.
Job done. I knew SOMEONE would get it. Congratulations Buttons!
Bah! I was planning to use this as a flimsy pretext to have a dip into a couple of Case Files tonight.
WoW many thanks for your help and suggestions everyone top job
