Title: Thrill Power Overload!
Post by: Tweak72 on 14 November, 2009, 12:08:09 PM
I have recently moved in with Mrs Tweak and as I now have what I can term a 'Boy Room' in which I can finally sort out my Progs and other Titles.

Over the years my Thrill Power containment units have taken a battering having been stored in attics, on top of cupboards or hallways.

Talk about Prog Slog!

The thing is I need advice as to the best way or technique to sort them before putting them in to boxes on shelves. Piles of 10 or 50 or 100? Faced with this how would you do it?

Cheers!

I'd book a day or two off work roll my shelves up and really enjoy slowly sorting them all out.

I'd say sort by size first, because that's quickest, then breakdown by 100s.

I've found that milk crates, cleaned and stacked on plastic utility shelves, provide the best storage options.

Forbidden Planet sells poly bags by 2000AD era sizes...and they have the magazine-sized boxes that say - wait for it - 2000AD on the side! Got my collection all bagged and boarded and stored this way!

As locustsoflove says, go the official route. Bag and box is the only way.
I have the majority of my comics in the attic now (due to the cellar becoming fullish) and on a work shelving unit from B&Q (other shops stock similar).
Sadly this unit was not as wide as the one I have in the cellar and I could only get two boxes on each level. There is another up there but I haven't put it together yet.
In the cellar I have mostly annuals, specials, computer/movie mags (with Dredd in, of course) boxed up with two boxes laid on their side being filled up each week until they are full and ready to be moved on, up to the attic.
Here are the photo's of the above items.

I think the general theme emerging here is get to a specialist thrill-merchant and get some 2000ad sized comic boxes.  They do the job perfectly.  Good luck, Tweak.

You could always utilise plastic boxes as well.  Good for keeping moisture out and avoids the need to bag each prog.

I've found some pretty cheap Ikea shelves that I store my comics on. The ones for American comics (not shown here) seem to be designed for comics perfectly. The ones that fit by 2000ad and British sized comics are a bit deeper than need but do the job a treat.

And the name of that type of shelf is?

There in the BESTA range.

My 2000ad and British stuff I put on these without the middle shelf (almost a complete set with Annuals and Specials fits comfortably on 4)

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20102149 (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20102149)

My American comics fit on these with only one of the two shelves used

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00102145 (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00102145)

I should explain cheap, they aren't cheap compared to boxes etc BUT if you're putting them on display they are cheap compared to other shelving options I looked at 3 1/2 years ago.

Big boxes. I don't hold with bags. In fact, when I've bought back Progs in bags I take them out before putting them in the boxes.

Just random shelves that happen to be quite good for 2000ad. They are a bit too deep as well but I was very pleased with them after a blister inducing afternoon of assembly.

As I think Ikea do delivery these days so you can stick to you're vow never to enter and get the shelves - RESULT!

I've just shown these to my wife, and got her tacit agreement to buying four of them. However, somehow, I've also managed to agree to buying her a wardrobe, my eldest son new shelving units and making her a rubber ring in the process. I'm not quite sure how that happened.

Strikes me as a comfortable compromise... I'll avoid any comments about making your wife a rubber ring however...

Yeah, I must say I was tempted by that too.  But I'll resist.....

Just a couple of quick questions Colin.

1. How do you put issues back on the shelves without creasing them, as I see you have not bagged them?
2. How many progs does each segment hold?

Thanks

I can see the chairman of Ikea rubbing his sweaty palms with glee as umpteen hndred comics-geeks descend upon his store, like Romero zombies, to feast on his perfectly sized "beech effect" woody goodness.

And since I imagine the Chairman of Ikea to be Sven Goran Erickson, I am reminded of that new tv advert for tissues, that ends with a freezeframe of Sven in a glorious ejaculatory pose and the onscreen tagline, 'Kleenex: Let It Out'.

To be honest I'm not massively careful with my Progs. I want them to be readable but just try to be careful when sticking them back on. This can be a pain though, particularly with the pre 520 issues which tend to flop around everywhere. I'm thinking if and when the collection moves to the recently tanked cellar I'm going to bag and board the lot for easy of access.

Given that they aren't bagged and board so you'll need to adjust this for bags and boards BUT each shelf is 120cm long made of two sections. Each section holds about 320 Progs so each shelf holds about 640ish.

There in the BESTA range.

Me too. Got my books, mags, annuals and some comics on tall Besta shelving. I went for a combo with draws along bottom. Very pleased with it. As shelving goes, I reckon it's good value for money.

Wow! Amazing collection keeping solutions chaps. And respect to all pictures of 2000ad related stuff. If any one can bother it would be interesting to see what trade storing solutions every one uses. And if any one else wants to take this opportunity for any and all to show off their comic collections please do so.   :D

UPDATE QUESTION

Going through my Progs as I sort them in to groups of Hundred I have hit a fat rich vein of 80's Eagle. The problem my poor dyslexic brain now has is this...

For those who may not remember, Eagle when it relaunched did not have any issue numbers on the cover it just had a date and "every Monday" on the cover.

I can sort them in to months but I was wondering if there is something I am missing?

The date never corresponds to the Monday on any calender I can find for 82 onwards. Is it nothing to worry about or is there some something that is going to confuse me later?

I try not to use modern forum/text speak but, OMFG! That is beautiful, just as Peter said.

I'd love for my progs to be as nicely contained. Maybe one day...

For a while I've wanted to invest in some magazine files to divide the hernia inducing stacks down to handier chunks by 'year'. I've looked at various options, cardboard seems too flimsy and plastic is way too expensive... If I ever get dedicated space for my collection(s) of things this is definitely the approach I will now take.
