It means you've added them to your ignore list. Probably by clicking the ignore button (to the right of the PM one beside this very post should you feel so inclined).
Go to your profile and you can find the list and add or remove names as you see fit.

I don't check my profile all that often but know that at one point I was ignored by one person who has since reinstated me. There may have been other times I'm not sure.

Its a nice feeling to know i have been de-ignored by a couple of boarders since i have calmed down a bit .Another forum that i use has no ignore facility at all which can be a pain with some of the forum users being annoying c**** plus the trolls/agents that post there and try to turn threads into disaster areas so since i cant ignore them i rip them to shreds using the keyboard which achieves the same result as an ignore facility.

Generally it comes down to some option in a drop down menu or a checkbox getting inadvertantly clicked on. I have a lot of lag problems with my broadband set-up, so I think that accounts for things. Hi Matt. My ignorer really should have been ignored by me first if I were to have been as pizzy about he as he turned out to be about me. A man decided to try to threaten me while I was beside the makeup counter, trying to get to the cuddly snowmen. SBT seems to live in a dimension two notches higher on the dial than me. I might pursue and exchange frank words with a driver who pulled right across me at a junction this morning, while Steev gets to deck a twonk twice.
To be fair- he was the Worst Arsehole I've Ever Seen. And he shoved me first. Luckily, since I'm very used to dealing with, er, "challenging behaviour", and get attacked fairly regularly, so I'm quite used to adopting the proper stance and not letting myself be unbalanced. I WAS thinking about doing a lovely "one person escort" on him, out of the shop and into the arms of the two dayglo-clad police officers I'd passed when entering Boots, but then he physically assaulted me, so I knocked him over.
Oddly, he was just a normal "dad". About my age, perhaps a bit older. Trendy leather jacket, face full of fury. If he'd've been a scary junkie, I'd've run away- but I was fairly sure he didn't have a weapon. He was just a twat used to shouting at people (grud help his family!), and I don't like bullies- and I take particular pleasure in taking them down.
The second time was very funny though, in retrospect. He just completely lost it and charged at me, flailing. So I stepped out of the way and kicked him in the leg. The ungainly twat.

I only ignore people who are consistently negative/angry and it's not any statement of dislike personally, everyone comes off different typing than in reality and I'm fairly sure I'd probably find something likeable about my ignored were I to meet them in real life.

I think I might have mentioned elsewhere that I think allowing people to know that that they are being ignored is a pointless and counter productive function of the board. How can it possibly lead to anything but bad feeling all round? Do people really need to know that they are being ignored by 1, 2 or 100 people? I agree. In any community, as with any group of people be it on an internet forum or a bunch of people you socialize with down the pub, there will be people who don't get on with other people. You can't help it, it's a fact of life. There will be people you like who completely, inexplicably like other people who you can't stand. Clearly, there is some quality in those people that I am missing. I can't help it, but I am.
Now, I know I'm a grumpy bastard who can run on a bit of a short fuse at times, so just pretending that they don't get on my tits can be a bit wearing, and I can't trust myself to bite my tongue every time they post something that winds me up. Hence: onto the ignore list they go. This says more about me than it does about them, so letting them know that they are ignored may (or in the case of my ignore list, much more likely, may not) cause them to wonder what they have done 'wrong' when the simple answer is: nothing. Their presence on my ignore benefits my blood pressure and the general mood of the board, since I'm not snapping at them.
Can we get rid of the "Ignored by X users" feature, please, Vince?

I like knowing how many i am ignored by just out of curiosity but it seems like a halfway house if you dont know who they are so if you dont know who they are then you might as well not know how many you are ignored by because it could easily create a climate of suspicion among others.If they were named so i knew who they are i wouldnt entertain any ill feeling towards them as they have the right to ignore my comments as much as they like in the same way they may ignore or avoid anything else in life they dont like.

Now, y'see, this is the problem with letting people see when they're ignored.
It may not be about you, HdE, it truly might not be. There are times when my ignore list is as long as your arm. Why? Because I'm a bad-tempered bastard, because no-one wants to see me snapping at perfectly innocent posters for no good reason just because I can't control my temper. It's just easier to bung people on ignore when my nerves are a bit frayed, or I'm a bit stressed, or when you realize that you are never going to agree with a particular poster on just about anything.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again now: the Ignore feature is a positive thing. Use it to reduce bad temper and ill-feeling on the forum -- that's what it's for.

I am thinking pretty much the same thing.
I dont want to make an issue out of this but at one time my conduct here was terrible but it has improved since then but the ignore count just goes up regardless which seems a bit perverse but my guess is its all because i speak my mind and the precious little darlings dont like it and its what i am saying that is the problem.
No one has to like my opinion on anything but i am not going to stop speaking my mind for anyone and i have already moderated or neutered myself already as even though there is free speech i dont have the luxury of really saying what i think about everything on a public forum.
I ignore 4 on here.Not because they are abusive but because their comments are the same thing every single time and there are only so many comments i want to read about broken/defective plastic figures.Sometimes i do read and reply to their comments as and when but the same thing time and time again just gets on my tits as i know what they are going to say there isnt any need to read it.

Except some people prefer this option to dropping c-bombs and being warned about it. In fact I'd recommend people use this option more if someone is pissing you off.
I've spoken to people about their reasons for using ignore and it ranges from avoiding being wound up by people (for a whole host of reasons from their opinions, their style of arguing to spelling) to purest devilment. Worrying about this and/or trying to second guess someone's motivation is only going to drive you round the bend - which might be a further motivation for ignoring someone.

underneath the avatars on the RHS you should see some little icons, a world, an envelope, a PM, a little red circle with a man in it, (some people only have a couple of icons, some people have more dependent upon their contact details). You only need to click that last icon to "mute" the person you wish to ignore...

As much as my own borderline ocd and not so borderline masochistic personlity makes me obsessed with statistics like this, I do just see it as a bit of a laugh. (still only one, must try harder). If people are genuinely upset or feel the need to make a big deal over it, maybe Matt's right, and it should be removed. How difficult would that be, as a matter of interest?

It is rather tightly stitched into the forum software but there may be a setting deep in the admin panel somewhere, although I have just nosed around and found nothing on it either in the documentation or with anyone asking how this is done. It might be because it is simple or it might not be possible or it might require the equivalent of wedging a screwdriver down the back and wiggling it until it stops working.
It does seem a scab people can't stop picking at, so I'll see if it is the first option. If it is the second one well... and the third is tricky because it can prevent easy updating or the updating just removes the changes or it could make something else go wrong.

In case anyone cares what I think; we should allow people to see how many users they're being ignored by. If it's a lot, perhaps they might get the hint and stop being so annoying. Or go away.
The only real downside is when people whine on and on about how many people are ignoring them.

I like seeing who's being ignored and by how many. The way I've been schooled to act on this board has shaped my opinions of newcomers and I can see why there is that amount of people ignoring whoever.
I don't think its entirely unfriendly knowing you are being ignored. It cuts through a load of hassle working out if you are being ignored.

I agree with JK- if you have lots of people ignoring you, you probably need to do some soul-searching to find out why.
People ignore folk who's posts they find irritating, if you don't want to stop being irritating (which is entirely your own choice) then you have to put up with being ignored.

Knowing that they aren't particularly well thought of might even do more harm than good to a person's general demeanor on the board. Speaking personally, I can't imagine I'd be moved to be a 'better person' if my ignore count was in double figures.
Maybe we could add a 'dead popular' function as well. That way, we can all know who's really, really cool and worth paying special attention to.

My usage of the ignore button is limited to those people who, 2000AD connection aside, i know that 'in real life' i would loathe, due to them being- in my view- arrogant stommheads with no people skills. And even then i feel bad because, doing what i do for a living, i realise the chances are this is simply indicative of some developmental disability or other. If i can cope with some of the most physically and verbally challenging individuals you're ever likely to meet 'in real life', i should be able to do so here. But maybe i just dont want to.
The trouble is, as i may have mentioned, i mostly access the board through my phone- and the ignore function doesnt apply to the mobile version. So 99% of the time, i see it all anyway.

An ignore function is common, yes- and it's brilliant, thanks. Actually knowing how many people are ignoring you is something I've never encountered anywhere else, however- and I'm genuinely disappointed that this is the first place I've encountered it.
I'm even more disappointed by your attitude towards people "making a big deal about it." I do apologise if my making a big deal over something I've never encountered anywhere else is slightly irritating to you- I just don't see that such a function is helpful to anyone- as evidenced by the very existence of this thread.
Don't worry though- it's not going to be a big deal to me from now on.

That's not what I'm saying. A lot of forums have the ignore feature and it is usually largely not on people's radars. If people make a big deal of it then it does become important, as it then becomes something that is difficult to overlook. It then comes up in threads like this, which gets people extra ignores (yes there are people who will ignore people out of devilment), and then they ask why and... it just goes on.
That is why I've asked the folks with those abilities to turn off the public listing of how many ignores someone has (if it is possible to do). I know most of you have tough skins and can cope with that, but I'm worried a few people may feel like people hate then and/or are ganging up on them.
Its not just the ignore - I have seen the buddy list feature on some forums become a big deal too as people start wondering about cliques and it inspires waves of a paranoia.

Just to clarify once more i am not making a big deal out of it as talking about something openly in which i am qualified to do isnt making a big deal out of it which is evident in my comments as i am not protesting about it as i learnt all about developing a thick skin and coping with being hated etc when i was at school.

It depend's on why you're ignoring them and why I'm not. I only have three on ignore- one was a borderline spammer, one a tube and the other just irritates me with 99% of what he says. There are a few others I would stick on the ignore list at the drop of a hat but I find it easy to just not read their posts. As to liking or not liking people- I can only definitely like or dislike people who I've met significantly in real life, I try to get along with everyone except people who piss me off. Isn't that fairly normal?

How many is 'many'? Is five many, in your book? For the amount of active posters we have, I think that's quite a lot, personally. The people I mainly ignore just get on my nerves. Their opinions annoy me and I find their general reasoning skills to be pretty weak and/or hypocritical- but it's not like they actively go out of their way to annoy me- or others, as far as I can see. Ultimately, they don't really have any particularly bad behaviour to modify.
Frankly, if you have five ignorers, it's quite likely that they're all ignoring you for different and completely unrelated reasons. In my case, it's probably because I think you're a giant dog's cock- and you could second guess yourself all week as to how I've come to that particular conclusion.
This particular topic is in very real danger of becoming a conversational cul-de-sac- now, so let's just leave it that you think it's ok to let people know that they're being ignored, without ever knowing who's ignoring them or why, in the hope that they'll figure it out and amend their behaviour accordingly (good luck with that one in my case, kids)- and that I think it's shitty, pointless and fuels bad feeling.
The only other point that I might be interested in discussing is this: how many people would you ignore if the people in question knew that you were ignoring them? I'm pretty sure I'd cut my list down to one in a heartbeat if somebody brought that in- but, in terms of modifying behaviour, even that would make more sense than the current "somebody's ignoring me- I wonder who it is and why?" system that we've got going right now.

On the one hand, it could be said that this could foster an air of paranoia; others might argue that it means there are no obvious cliques.
On this one, you can see how unpopular you are. There are also far less flame wars/ n00b bashing on here than in many other forums. Haven't got a clue if the two can be linked, or whether it's just circumstantial.

I ignore 4.3 of which hardly ever post anyway which makes having them on ignore virtually pointless but the reason i ignored them as it was always the same comment that was usually always about themselves rather than something else let alone comics etc.They were not intenionally trying to be annoying which was evident in their comments unless of course telling everyone else about how great their life is over and over again or complaining about the same computer problem over and over again after apparently not taking the slightest bit of notice of advice being given wasnt obviously going to irritate others.

Ignorers who ignore the ignorers are most definately ignorant.Havent they got anything better to do with their time ?
I suspect that they think its clever but it will teach the original ignorers that they are not so bloody perfect and above it all and popular as they like to think they are and it gives them a taste of their own for once.
No one can tell if they are ignored by others anymore which makes the act of ignoring others completely pointless.
