Title: Help from a Slaine Buff
Post by: Felix Vane on 26 November, 2009, 10:29:04 PM
Hey all   ;)

I've just began reading the Slaine Graphic Novels and need help, as strange as it sounds, on the reading order. I've all three books of The Horned God, All three versions of The Books of Invasions, Slaine the Exile, Slaine the Defiler, Warriors Dawn and soon to be Demon Slayer.

So what order should I read them in so that the story flows as it should?

Any help from any fine, outstanding members of the public will be appreciated!  ;D

The Warriors Foundary models of 2000AD Characters, Are they made for an already existing game, Or are they just models for collection/aesthetic purposes?

Thanks again!  :D

Welcome Felix!

The order of the Mills-written stuff (i.e. not the novels) is as follows:

Slaine: Book 1 - Warrior's Dawn
Slaine: Book 2 - Time Killer
Slaine: Book 3 - The King
Slaine: Book 4 - The Horned God (part of the first bit of which recaps in very sweeping detail the events of the first three as it was the first colour series so folks could be caught up nice and easy if they came to it with no previous knowledge)

and then the upcoming
Slaine: Demon Killer (the beginning of the time-travel era)

then there's a gap of stuff that's yet to be reprinted - then it's back to his own time in "The Secret Commonwealth" (also yet to be reprinted) and then

Slaine: The Books of Invasions (volumes 1-3)

Then, uncollected as yet, we've had "The Gong Beater" and "The Amber Smuggler" - both with art by Clint Langley who did the Books of Invasions.

He should be up on Wikipedia if you look.

Am I the only one who thinks that "Gong Beater" and "Amber Smuggler" sound just a little bit ... well ... fnarr, fnarr?

Cheers!

I will quickly try to answer your question before Mayor ThryllSeekyr brings you his unique blend of shock and awe.

Warriors Dawn
Time Killer
Slaine the King
The Horned God
Demon Killer
... quite a bit of stuff that either hasn't been reprinted or is out of print...
Books of Invasions I - III

Details of the currently available books, in order, here: You wont think it too many (http://www.2000adonline.com/books/slaine-the-horned-god.php)

The two novels don't really fit into this being (I believe) a sort of retelling/fleshing out of the early stories.

I don't think there's a specific Slaine game, but I'm not up on that stuff.

I may have just said all that, Cosh! ;p  Although I conceed your brevity makes more sense.

But then, as you say, TS will be here shortly to repeat it all with less clarity than either of us managed (kidding).  I believe there was a roleplaying game from Mongoose, but I don't think the minatures have any relation to that.

[edit] Novels
The first Sláine novel was released at the end of 2006:

Sláine: Sláine the Exile (Steven Savile, Black Flame, December 2006, ISBN 1844163873)
Sláine: Slaine the Defiler (Steven Savile, Black Flame, September 2007, ISBN 1-84416-493-4)

As for a Slaine game. There is a Role-Playing-Game published by Mongoose Publishing The started with Dtwenty, Dungeon and Dragons, 3rd editon rules and after several more source books, a few adventures. They converted those rules to the Runequest system. Not that I've played either of them. I don't all the required books for either system. Though, I do have everything that has the Slaine trademark. My problem with playing game such as this based on this character and the world he inhabits is that, I would really like to play as Slaine. Besides, I do have difficulty role playing and comiong up with interesting characters of my own. Anyway, it's still a interesting read. If you like Slaine like I do.

Are there any other games based on Slaine? Yes, there was old Spectrum/C64 coimputer game base don the character and published by Martech
It's innovative for it's time and had interesting control system called Reflex, that would be demonstrative of how. You as the player can never really be in full control of Slaine

http://www.uvlist.net/game-14809-Slaine+The+Celtic+Barbarian (http://www.uvlist.net/game-14809-Slaine+The+Celtic+Barbarian)

Got the game and have played the emulation version. It's hard to get through and I've never gotten far.

Personally, I would very much like to see a decent Slaine computer game. Inspired by the free roaming/sandpit aspect of those Rockstar North Games.

As for those Foundry Minatures....

I thought they were part of the Slaine dtwenty game and perhaps they are. Though they didn't make many. I wanted them to see them pretty much make all of them. They stopped making those not long before Slaine Runequest was published. I think their 2000AD Character Division have closed down.

I got just about all of the Slaine minis, barring one or two of the character himself and Nest, Ukko, and a SkullSword.

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/2000AD/index.asp (http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/2000AD/index.asp)

Concerning the latest reprint of the Horned God....

I was looking for Simon Bisley's colourised map of Tir-Nan-Og and the surrounding lands.

Pictured here....

I don't think I recall finding the map anywhere in that graphic novel. First time it hasn't been included. Though, I think it's essential, if your only interested in owning one version of the Slaine sagas. Otherwise it's the best reprint, because it's all done in one book.

Besides, I was looking to see where the region known as the Lyonesse is.

Slaine's favorite biscuits?

I don't know , but I was thinking that something made from bakeing clumps of oat-meal over a open fire and then serving with with beer or ale.

I suspect Slaine might  dipp each one in his tankard before eating.

I got that idea from reading Creeping Death. As ukko takes advantage of the healing properties oats and powdered bone.

What ealse would there be to eat if your a Celtic barbarian living in the north?

Roast boar, potatoes, salmon, turnips....

I know I didn't answer that questtion properly before.

The Foundry Minatures.....

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/2000AD/index.asp (http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/2000AD/index.asp)

Are to my knowledge, just sold as collectables that can be painted. They are nopt offically part of any game, but could be used for any of the 2000AD related role playing gemes made by Mongoose Publisihing or the earlier Games Workshop series.

Not that I am certain, but I think that minatures might have also been made for Gangs of Mega City One, which is no longer made/sold by Mongoose Publisihng.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/14709 (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/14709)

All their minatures woul be the ones only related to Judge Dredd. As you mnotice Foundry MInatures have made....

Nemesis The Warlock

A.B.C. Warriors

Strotium Dog

Rogue Trooper

As well as Slaine

Personnally, I don't think they have made enough Slaine minatures for to be used in any big games. Sure, you can still use them, but they are mostly just different variants of Slaine & Ukko themselves.

To answer your question.  It's possibly true that Foundry made two sets of minatures. Collectables, made for a asthetic purpose and those that are directly associated with Gangs of Mega City One.

Common sence will help you where I have not.

Haveing brought myself the Gangs of Mega City One box set. I'm re-reading the rules now. I was hoping to one day write my own rules for including those other 2000AD minatures just for my own use. I was seriously thinking of a Slaine variant for this particular game. If you get my meaning.

No potatoes for Slaine, TS.

They were indigenous to the Americas and found their way here after Europeans rediscovered the "New World" for the last time thanks to Columbus.

Bad luck, but thanks for playing.  Come and have a look at what you would've won....

I note the presence of a Native American chieftain in the gladiator pen in Cythrawl.  Maybe he brought some spuds with him and Sláine had some while waiting for a time-traveling seamstresses to run up his leatherboy outfit.   Anyway, if they're good enough for Samwise Gamgee...

Ah, the first rule of being cyber-chums with Jim Campbell is etc etc.

He's a user here, you'll meet him soon enough.  He runs the art competitions here and, despite pretending otherwise, probably won't kill you.  He's also a lettering droid (never use a crossbar "I" - he will punish you).  A legend?  Yes, that describes him well.  Sadly it's less of a Conan legend and more of a legend about a man with the short temper and the encyclopaedic knowledge of fonts.

1, he's a lettering god, who knows all there is to know about fonts and typefaces. He wages a one man war against the evil that is comic sans and anyone who puts a crossbar on a capital I.

2. He kindly takes the time to organise our regular art comps on this board, tallying all the votes etc, for which we are all in his debt.

3. He used to frequent the John Byrne Robotics forum (see this thread (http://2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,17355.0/topicseen.html)) and bring us nuggets of insanity for our amusement, but they keep banning him because in JB's world dissent WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

4. He can be a right grumpy sod if you criticise the i-phone

*grabs copy of Warrior's Dawn collection.  Leafs through*

Yes, it's the last storyline in the Warrior's Dawn graphic novel.  Read that anyway, it's got all the early stuff (there are one or two stories from annuals that have yet to be reprinted anywhere, but nothing truly essential to enjoyment of the stuff you've got).

The current edition of Warrior's Dawn (with the McMahon Time Monster cover) is one of the finest things in all comicdom, possibly in all creation.  If Rebellion never did another thing for us, that'd almost be enough.

The merest glance at that McMahon artwork transports me back to that sense of dumbfounded awe as the twelve-year old me literally had his fragile little mind warped by the sheer audacity of what Mick was attempting.

Cheers!

Just look at the rooty 'antlers' on Slough Throt's mask - that alone stinks of genius.

I never get tired of looking at those pages.  The scene of Slaine wrestling the bull, the chaos of the boarding action, the look of teh flames qnd smoke, the incredibly plausible lightness of the ships themselves, the naturalistic forest below...  Soth!  You can keep your Bisleys and your Fabrys, the Bellarndinelli/McMahon team are the men for me.

I take it your all middle aged guys here? Your talking of this in a reminiscent kind of way, Like it was something you read quite an age ago?

Just an assumption, I'm sure your all lovely, outstanding members of the general public. Possibly.  :o

Cheeky bastard!*

I'd actually mis-remembered the dates for this -- the page above was first published in Feb 1984, meaning that I was fourteen, going on fifteen at the time.

Cheers!

Jim

*Yes. All right, it's true. We don't like being reminded!

It WAS something I read a very long time ago.  Late 80s for me (although I was a latecomer).

I'm 35, which means I no-longer count as "young" as of my last birthday, but have about five years before I count as middle-ageed.
