Title: What should I buy?
Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 01 January, 2010, 03:41:17 PM
Okay you tech heads out there, I have recently bought a PC with the following specs:-

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
Intel Core 2 Quad processor Q8300.
4 GB DDR2 memory.
1 TB HDD.
DVD Super Multi Drive.
Intel GMA X4500 Integrated.
Integrated LAN 10/100/1000.

Now the last few bits mean bugger all to me but what I'm after is some ideas on products that I should buy to do video editing, photo minipulation and that sort of thing.
I might in the future think about doing some sort of comic layout with pictures I take, what would I need to enable that?
Also are there any other types of things I should be on the look out that will mean I can get the full potential out of this metal box?

Any help would be gratefully received and if you post links, all the better.

I went in to my local comic shop the other day and found this book

http://www.amazon.co.uk/DC-Comics-Guide-Digitally-Drawing/dp/0823099237 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/DC-Comics-Guide-Digitally-Drawing/dp/0823099237)

IMO it is the best "How to" guide for making digital comics I have read. It is all about the photoshops and the guy even has a couple of very useful file paths free on his web site

Matt Brooker is all about Adobe Photo shop and so is Mrs Tweak (who is a Children's illustrator) in fact most people are about photoshop for any photo or digital image manipulation.

There is also the free share ware Gimp which is almost as good as CS3 http://www.gimp.org/ (http://www.gimp.org/)

a few of my pals use Sony Vegas and love it but here is a review thing I found to give ya a direction

http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

I would really suggest a few hours looking on some editing forums and just see what every one says there

I know that this is not quite what you asked for but I hope it helps :)

Thanks very much Tweak72, all bits of info that open my eyes are helpful, as like I say I have no idea and so am starting from scratch. I shall be looking at all the sites and recommendations that you mentioned.

Thanks again
John

edit. That last link is perfect, thanks :)

Grab the free ones and see if they suit your purposes - it might be you need more to get the job done, in which case you can lay out the serious money but equally that might be all you need.

I got that book the other day -- not quite finished it, but it does have some really good tips in it. I think it's going to turn out to have paid for itself in some of the time-saving advice.

(However, I thought Matt B did most of his actual drawing in Illustrator?)

Cheers!

Jim

I was given 'Adobe CS3 Master Collection' from a work mate last night for free. This seems to have quite a lot of stuff on it that is related to what I want. I suppose once I try some of it out I'll know if I should keep looking for video and photo stuff.
Complications :-\

Wow... didn't think this kind of product existed outside "proffessional" circles...
