Title: American and Russian Patriotic Comics?
Post by: Pete Wells on 04 January, 2010, 04:56:20 PM
A strange one this guys, hope you don't think I'm taking the piss!

Next week I'm working with a local secondary school, we're making photostrip comics as part of their history curriculum. They're going to be about the moon landings of 1969, exciting stuff!

Their teacher wants one bunch of students to make an American version which will be all proud and patriotic and the other group to do a Russian version, which may be a bit less... congratulatory.

So, what I want to know is, does anyone know of any examples I use to show the lovely bairns? I'm assuming that Captain America and Superman would be good for the American stuff - did they fight Nazis and 'dirty commies' in less liberated times? Similarly, and less easily I would imagine, does anyone know anything about Russian comics of the time?

Thanks in advance Hivemind!

Your starter for ten:

A personal favourite from more recent comics - Stalin vs Hitler:

This might also be handy:

Some of it is now obviously racist and other things might be considered a little near the knuckle so worth running past someone else (you can imagine the tabloid headlines now!!).

Iron Man has a Soviet arch enemy called the Crimson Dynamo. Apparently to be played by Mickey Rourke in Iron Man 2. The original character in the comic was Armenian (poor Armenians, haven't they had enough of a kicking).

There are plenty of anti-communist war comics but I can't find pro-communist comics.

I hadn't heard of this Mark Millar Red Son alternate reality story before:

Maybe not quite what you're after, but The Freedom Collective was quite a fun take on a Russkie Fantastic Four.

Not exactly what you are actually asking for Pete, but kind of interesting:
