Title: Anyone any good at Photoshop?
Post by: Mangamax on 19 January, 2010, 09:36:42 PM
Got an image that i'd like to tweak in the following way:

Change the three folks in its tops with Star Fleet tunics.
Remove the background.
Add a transporter room and maybe the beginning of the transporter effect.

Trouble is, i haven't a blummin' clue how to go about it.
Any folks willing to take the project on?
Will Paypal beer money for your time 8)

It might be easier to find  pick of three people in Starfleet uniforms standing in front of a transporter and PS the faces onto the that, TBH.

Cheers

I have just created 2 birthday cards for Sophie using the method Jim has just mentioned. It is quite easy once you get to grips with it.

This reply is frankly useless.

If you want to make your friends look like fannies could I suggest you use this picture instead?

See vzzbux, helpful that what that is.

Lasso round the edge of the face you want to replace in the Star Trek image.

Select -> Modify -> Feather

You may have to experiment with the value here. Try starting at 8px. The higher the resolution the image, the larger the value you can get away with here.

Go to the photo of the face you want to use instead. Repeat the process above.

Copy.

Return to the Star Trek image and go Edit -> Paste Into

The selection in the ST photo will now act like a 'hole' through which your pasted face will now show. Use Edit -> Free Transform to adjust the position and scale of the pasted new face until it's the right size and postion. You may want to use the Eraser tool set to AIrbrush to remove parts of the pasted face so that it matches the original better.

Repeat for the others, then flatten image and save as a TIFF or JPEG for printing.

Cheers!

Cheers for that Jim, you've described what to do nice and clearly and reckon even a Luddite like me would be able to follow it.
But i'd like to keep the folk in the photo as themselves rather than transfering their heads onto Trek bodies.
Its asking a bit much, but don't suppose you'd be able to let me know how i go about just changing their tops, basically substituting what they're wearing with a different colour?. And then putting the badges on their chests?
Like i say, i'm a Luddite and all attempts have failed miserably so far.

I'm no expert and often do things the longer and harder way, but if I had to do this I'd create another layer and simply overpaint their clothes. Starfleet tunics (original series?) are very simple one-colour efforts, so unless the original image below has any sticky-out bits that would show beyond the edges of a painted shirt, it should be fairly easy. Than at the end, flatten all the layers into one image.

It's not that you're a luddite - it's that Photoshop is a tool that requires skill. Having spent several hundred pounds on it (unless you're using Elements?) it's surely worth you putting the effort in to learn some skills and get your money's worth?
