i would like to upload photos here occasionally but when i try to it tells me the photo size is too large , the max being 256kb.
how do i reduce a picture size from the ( roughly ) 1mb down to the 256kb needed?
i'm not very good with doing things like this so try to tell me in thicko terms :D

You'll need some kind of image processing software to either reduce the size (the actual dimensions - for viewing on a forum anything much above 500-600px wide is going to be a bit too big), resolution (the web is only 72 dpi) or file size (which requires compression).
Photoshop is the pros choice but you can get something like GimpShop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMPshop) (or GimPhoto (http://www.gimphoto.com/)) for free.
Back in the day there were sites that'd compress files for you but it is better to make sure you've got all three angles address when resizing images (no point compressing it if it starts of so huge it doesn't fit on the screen).

I find photobucket the best, but if linking an image from elsewhere on the net, an attachment is easier ( right click - save image as - click on "additional options" in your post and then browse to find the file).
This site is the only thing I use my photobucket account for, so a trawl through my album is bizarre - all kinds of weird scanned comics and shit I've posted here over the last couple of years.
There must be other options, because when I look at the site at work, photobucket images don't show, but some people's postings do.
Yes I use Photobucket... and have nearly 90 pages of pics. It's simple enough for even me to use.
What I want to know is how to get an avata picture and a sig on my account.
Cause I can't seem to find the image editing section for my account....

Click on your own name to get your profile up.
Click on "forum profile information"
If you have an image saved, click on "I will upload my own picture" and select the file.
The same page ("forum profile information") is where you can input your sig.
