completely and utterly AWESOME!!
Surely you mean ARSOM?!?
This thread takes the arse out of arsom, meaning it's fan-ass-ic.
If any of the artists would like to create an image of the Ghost of Sid James, I think it would be very welcome here....
Thanks for your timely intervention, Emp. I feel I can come out from under my rock, now.
There's a load of us in the Yap Shop tonight - why not join us?
Such an image could put him back years and start the bed-wetting again
Oh I didn't realise he was that Legendary Shark....!
Such an image could put him back years and start the bed-wetting again (the worse thing being it was other people's beds, so you can add nudey sleep walking and nocturnal somnolent burglary to the rap sheet.

I already covered those bases with this earlier one (ROBOT-ZOMBIE-PIRATE-NAZI-NINJA!!!!)....
Love those martyrs, Johnnystress! Do St. Lawrence next (roasted on a griddle)! Or better yet, St. Maurus (boiled alive)- I love that story!
Man, you guys are all, like, good at drawing and stuff.
Zombie Saints is surely a comic book idea too good to miss! Nice work johnnystress.
Why not? Even Jesus was a kind of a zombie...
There are LEGS on that idea. Christianity-friendly spin on the current zombie trend.
IOEM - I like the texture on his clothes - it gives that shiny shellsuit type fabric look to it (although you may not have wanted that!) :)
Why not? Even Jesus was a kind of a zombie...
The exact reason for this piece escapes me now - a comp perhaps?
But now this JPEG is all that exists of the piece where I feel I first 'got' inking line art with brushes.
And that's why I have a positive attachment to it still.
My one major criticism in hindsight was the unnecessary Pshop. Something I can't change as I no longer have the digital files or original artwork.
To me the texturing of the clothing adds nothing. The halftone 'vertex' in back frames the figure well enough though.
Ol
Was thinking earlier that i havent seen anything from Jimbo in a while, and then a double-whammy* of stunners!
Dark Jimbo that is SUPERB and worthy of the 2000AD range of Christmas cards for 2010. ARE YOU LISTENING THARG!
Needless to say, I am cheating:

It's missing a "P" though, Matt. Is that deliberate?

Seems like an appropriate place to post this - an entry for one of the xmas art threads a few years ago. Unfinished because I somehow managed to simultaneously delete the other half of the picture and flatten the layers of what was left before overwriting all previous versions. A system restore never occured to me and it's far too late now, so this is all that remains...
Been there fella :(
Lost about half my artwork when a hard-drive literally exploded on me!
What have i learned? REGULAR BACK-UPS!
*cough*cough*cough*TimeMachine*cough*
Ahhh. Smug Mode.
Cheers!
Jim
TimeMachine is a brilliant idea, but it takes up a ridiculous amount of hard drive space.
Well, it really warrants a dedicated drive, but given the price of HDDs these days, I don't really see the issue with that. You're also still f*cked if the drive blows up...
Which, sadly, happened to mine. It's a question of how much redundancy you're prepared to build into your system back-up procedures. I'm looking into an online/Cloud-based solution as a back-up to my back-ups, since there's a limit to how many drives I'm prepared to have sitting on my desk!
Cheers
Jim
That's an impressive piece there - if it was a page from a Harry Potter comic... I don't think the reader would be disappointed to find that between the covers.
That must have been quite a birthday present, bet the reaction from the girl was fantastic!
It would actually be a pretty GOOD advert though. Look at her. Look at that sallow complexion, that bored, listless look on her face. THAT CAN BE YOU.
SMOKE!
Finished!

Neviasky,
To embed pictures, right click on your deviantart image and pick 'copy URL', then open up your post and click on 'insert image' directly under the 'B', then paste the URL in between the two 'img' tags.
Hope that helps!
Just in case anyone missed these first time round, a couple of STAR WARS posters made for my kids. They're both printed at A2 and framed on their respective bedroom walls.Great posters there James. Can't wait until my daughters old enough to appreciate me drawing her things. Having said that, for a two year old she's getting quite good herself. :D
You realise this makes you the greatest dad in the known universe don't you?
Most of my Dr Who art is done for my nephews. I'll be quite depressed when they get to the mardy teenage phase and aren't impressed anymore....

...son.
Thanks everyone, after seeing all the awesome art collected here I felt I should post my best piece. Now that I have it posted, it will all be downhill from here...
Bloody Hell Dave- Wish you'd shown me that at Bristol! Dogbreath would really have liked that.
I fell out of love with it after Simon Bisley called it shite, shortly before he signed my arm and called me a c**t.
Anyway, this is an art thread so here is some more art. The first page of that Dredd strip I was showing around Hi-Ex. It's not quite finished as I have just noticed the eagle pad in the last panel is missing a few lines (curses!).
I wish I could colour faster...
One thing that jumps out - it is a flashback and most people go for the Mk 1 Lawgiver. Hope that has not sprinkled something that is nothing like vinegar on your chips.
That's damn good art there, Dave. First panel in particular. As I scrolled and it came into view I thought it was by Simon Fraser.
And I second whoever said they'd like to see Radiator's Dredd effort on the cover of their prog - very nicely done.

Unfortunately, though I'm fairly pleased with pieces like this one, I'm a bit rubbish at drawing actual comics (I'll hopefully be able to post some evidence here soon...) so that's not going to happen anytime soon.
It requires a feat of mental gymnastics before you've even put pen to paper and I have the utmost respect for those that are able to do it.
Seconded. I frequently write panels and think 'I have no idea how the artist is going to do that', but they always do, and usually better than I could have imagined.
Character A holds up Character B and electrocutes him using his powered gauntlets. In the background, characters C and D advance cautiously. Behind them all, Dredd bursts into the room, gun drawn.

How much pagespace did the script give you for that - ? Whenever I draw from someone else's script I normally end up creating extra panels or squeezing down others. Although thankfully I've found the perfect way to get around the whole process is to not be good enough to be asked to draw anything. It works for me.

I literally could not work out a way to get all of that information into a single panel - and the result was a disaster!
Speaking with my writer's hat on: writers are idiots. They have no clue how much information can be conveyed in a panel. As an artist, it's your job to fix the script! I haven't written a script that's been illustrated where the artist hasn't made some fundamental changes to what I described. Every single time, I've looked at what they've done and made a mental note that this is the reason why someone else is drawing the strip!

Fair point, Jim. But if I was going to submit a strip, surely it would not impress the editor if I started chopping and changing panels because I know better?
Seconded. I frequently write panels and think 'I have no idea how the artist is going to do that', but they always do, and usually better than I could have imagined.
In the sample script I've drawn (Generation Killer) there was one panel in particular that gave me a bit of a nightmare. The description went something like:Character A holds up Character B and electrocutes him using his powered gauntlets. In the background, characters C and D advance cautiously. Behind them all, Dredd bursts into the room, gun drawn.
I literally could not work out a way to get all of that information into a single panel - and the result was a disaster!
I'll go and take a sneaky peek at the story now
I went and did just that and it is funny when you see it - the description makes it sound like a big, mad, busy panel and John Higgins has drawn it pretty small and pretty simple, you'd pass right over it and not bat an eye lid (you'd certainly not think it was the kind of panel that would cause despair). I suspect you've overthought it.
Imal puts a hand on Peart’s shoulder, there’s a little electric discharge and Peart jerks as if stunned. In bg Dredd comes running into Maternity unit, gun drawn. Halfway between the two the two security men have stopped, in a quandary about what to do.
PEART: uHHhH!
DREDD: LET GO THAT CITIZEN, CREEP!
I didn't refer to Higgin's art at all as I wanted it to be completely my own take.
"Peart and Imal need to be dominant in the panel to clearly show what is happening" Peart is closest to the viewer but hard up against the left edge of the panel and all we see of Imal is his hand (because that is all that was needed - the reader can fill in the rest there).
Any chance we can see your pages?
As I said OVER AT THAT GROUP THAT'S VERY GOOD AND PEOPLE SHOULD JOIN IT (http://feralgargantua.deviantart.com/) - I do love this. Anyone else getting a good n' groovy Fraservibe from it?
Cheers for the comments folks.
It's good to get to show some of this non 2000ad art to a wider audience.
Here's a couple for anyone old enough to remember the early days of VHS.

Let me say it one more time...
HOT VAMPIRE VIXEN CHICK rocks!
it's of one of my friends, who specifically asked to be bleeding in one eye,you have some odd friends.
Thankfully there was no-one else around when I saw Gibson Quarter's sketch at the top of this page.
I did shout "Hell, yeah" just a little too loudly.

Ronnie Scott-Judge Fire
Re design Brian Bollands classic characters? Sacrilidge! ;)
Ronnie Scott-Judge Fire
...while taking a break from running his famous London Jazz club perhaps ... unless you mean Ronnie Wood! :D
If you want Dredd to blend slightly more with the background the old Matte Painter trick was to take the colour in the background and mix it with the colours in the forground. You could lightly dust with the blue/green colour the back of Dredd's helmet, shoulder pad, Eagle, arm etc but only if you want this effect.
This sounds interesting, System. Could you elaborate? I've never heard of this technique.
Ta muchly :)
(What is the difference between a rabbit and a hare anyway?)
There are a LOT more Rabbits around than Hares
Hares prefer unimproved ground with plenty of cover, rabbits are happy enough with parks, lawns and golf courses. Guess which species is in decline. We have two species of hare in Ireland, our native Irish, and the introduced Brown or European hare. Does Britain still have an introduced as well as a native strain? (I only know this stuff because they're useful archaeological dating markers: rabbit bones = 12th C or later; Brown hare = 19th C or later).
I don't like Zombies anymore - I had to go on a diet because I was having seriously bad Zombie nightmares. :)

Over-worked?? I'll take over-worked every day of the week. Reminds me a bit of the first image of the examples of Bianchi's Thor work (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=27079) - I could see it as a cover somewhere. You know the pressure is only going to be on to see some colour sequential work ;)

Nice inks Jim. (But should we be encouraging a letterer to get ideas above his station like a proper artist?)
great work!
great work!
Indeed. I'm getting a Brendan McCarthy feel off the inks, which is just fantastic.
Cheers!

Well I look towards Ezquerra whenever I think Dredd. But I grew up looking at Jim Lee. Currently I look at Paul pope, Sean Phillips and Ashley wood.

Any idea how to make it look like its caught in fiery torchlight without him disappearing into the darkness or looking jolly and yellow? Cant quite get the lighting right.
..........nice gusset shot! :D
A Dredd not yet coloured,i need to find a photoshop tuorial on colouring comic art because i can't get my head round it due to being numb
Very good! I like that take on the lawgiver too. The thought occurred to me that it look kind of 'steam-punk' but that's not quite right. 'Industrial' would be a better term. Makes it look rather nasty and vicious, if that makes sense.Cheers pal,i was going for a sorta ray-gun/desert eagle route for the lawgiver but it went a bit west, like the leg :-[,needs tidying up on t'pooter.
I'm really pleased with how this one turned out.... and I learned some improved Photoshop colouring methods in the process.
Sorry its not 2000ad related - I just wanted to draw the "S" !
Ooooh, I like the style of that Dredd, DanboJohnJ. Yes, very Dillon. I miss him in my prog these days. :'(Cheers, glad you like it. :)
And you should be pleased - it looks excellent and you win extra marks for adding nipples.
Only note i would add....
...the Dr Who one is a bit, um, 'Up The Arse Corner'... :o
That popped into my head when i was drawing it, but i thought if i don't mention it noboby would notice it.DDDDDUUUUUHHHHH!

Exilewood I love that - ! I REALLY BLOODY LOVE THAT.
Jim - very Staz Johnsonesque and very very very good. The painted version makes me praise lord Boo on high. You are brave.
That inking is looking highly accomplished Jim. I could see that style working with Gibson Quarter's art.
Gorgeous stuff there, Cpt. Rhodes. Whats this for?
Due to be published (hopefully as an ongoing strip) in Wasted, early in the new year.

Some excellent stuff their guys. Jim - the inking is looking fantastic.

I should really stop looking.
Anyone have any decent tutorials on using holds in Photoshop?
Is there nothing you don't know Jim?
Dave, That's just brilliant. Even the concept. Roller Babes in Hell would be the ultimate cheese movie but i'd pay to see it.

Wow. Cover/starscan worthy! :o

I've been trying to upload this for ages, but the blacks don't scan properly, can anyone offer any advice?Pops, If you have Photoshop, to improve the blacks you could try this: Duplicate your layer, change the duped layer from normal to Overlay then play about with levels/brightness/saturation to suit. The process should give you a strong contrasty image.
if you're using photoshop you can select a specific area and then fill it in black with the polygonal lasso tool - or even just the lasso one.
Thanks guys. I think I was pretty vauge in my question. Does any one know how to get the right shape and length for the shadow in perspective cast correctly. as I inked this in illust studio putting a shadow is no problem its putting a shadow correctly that I'm having difficulty with.In my humble opinion I don't think the shadow is necessary and personally I'd be worried, (and that's only If I was doing it) that the shadow might actually make the handles hard to read as handles. The viewpoint is almost in exactly the same postion as the light which would render the shadows as negligible.

I don't think it's for the ABCs special - all I know is my strip isn't scheduled for print until mid to late 2011... Maybe someone in the know can confirm...?
Yeah that sounds about right. Probably for the best - my heart rate raised slightly at the thought that my strip would be (sort of) competing against loads of other artist's interpretations of the ABCs!

Leigh - great bleedin' imp. I always find making a big list of all the stuff you have (or want) to draw helps. Y'know - you move through it in a categorical fashion and your desire to do a task further down the list motivates you to do everything before that if that makes sense. Now relax and enjoy a big screaming amp.

I keep all my reference work on the board to keep me right as i'm going along and in some cases I can diectly colour pick for accuracy but then that tends to change depending on how the scene's lighting affects it.
Between the day job and family duties I'm only turning in a fully painted page of comic art a month.
Oops. Didn't think it was that bad.
Poster art with banner in place. I hope Photobucket don't blast this one out of the sky.....

Proudhuff, It starts as an ongoing 4 page strip in Wasted from issue 7 onwards. (which will be February) and from what I hear It's looking possible that the the strip will be printed in full colour.
Apart from the cover art for isssue 7 and the strip itself I'm working on these individual poster images of all the Vixens to help promote it at marts and shows etc.
The strip is co written by me and none other than the board's Emperor himself.

The stuff on this thread is just too good.
Conceptboy - The Judge Killers should be turned into a strip and published in Zarjaz. Love the grainy backgrounds. It's an image bursting with possibilities.

Nice work... my only comment would be to put a floor/base/ground for the two characters to sit on... i think that will help frame the illustration and give greater impact to the nice background.

Yeah I'd echo what CrazyFoxMachine said as much as I love Alex's recent work his pen and ink stuff just blows me away. That Marshal Law is just superb.
I was rooting around at the weekend and found these copies of old school stuff from the 90's
I second that, has a whiff of a Frank uitely to it.
This is my most recent creation. I call it a Tricentaurops, although I'm not entirely sure that's the correct taxonomical nomenclature.

Edit: I have just discovered the button left of 'w' and above 'a' isn't working.
Neil, are all those shades of grey on the body actually crosshatchings?
Looks mega detailed and a very unique style.
Thansk for the kindness dudes!
@LARF: nice work man, how do you draw on an iPad, got a wee light-pen or something?
@Dave Hedmark: Think I like lefty better, the chap in BG looks like he's getting a right lamp with that wrench.
@Cpt Rhodes: WOW. Very cinematic, what kind of software/ techniques do you use? Love to hear about your processes a bit.
Well, it seems to be a GUARANTEED way to achieve a LOT of traffic when posting to DeviantArt and is good for getting a bit of exposure!

Draw a sexy night elf from World of Warcraft and you'll be raking in the hits on deviantart. I did one years ago for an art contest by Blizzard and uploaded it to dA. Since then I have had a neverending stream of 14 year old americans faving it.
They don't give a shit about anything else I have done though. :'(
Oh alright, LARF. I'll put it up for you, not just because you asked so nicely but because I butchered one of your stickman comics. :-[
(http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/5103/nightelfo.jpg)
I have grown to hate this pic over the years and would delete from my dA account but then I wouldn't get any hits.
*drools over Sexy Night Elf's boots*
Both lovely images, but you can't beat a picture of a woman bending over.
Any day of the week.
Fuck me that's good!!
Added some lipgloss and blusher.

Cheers for the comments chaps, thank you!
@Cthulouis: hi man, yes, I've had a shot years ago [early 90's]. I was such a dong at that age I failed to take advantage of a lot of amazing oportunities, then hardly drew a thing for about 10-12 years. Bewildering...
Been working on art seriously again for about 2 years, shaking off a lot of rust! Anyway, yes, working on some new sequential stuff with a cool chap from the states and I'm doing a wee story for Vworp Vworp fanzine with a Uk writer next year - take it from there then, I would like to try and do some small press work I think.
Getting time to work is a problem, I'm self employed with a young family, so art time is precious!

Any chance you might do a painted Slaine pic? Your style would suit it perfectly, IMO!
Our celtic chum will feature in my advent calender entry, hope I don't disapoint you!
@Emperor: Cheers! I'm excited about it the Vworp Vworp story, be nice to see soeme of my work in print. RE: Smallpress - LOL! Very kind of you to say, but I'm under no illusions, I've got LOTS to learn!
Some amazing stuff on here again, the powers need to make a numpty thread for folk who are a bit crap like me.
I have diversified into sculpture:

I think we need a thread for this as I've already been emailed a couple of these by boarders.
The deactivated robot thingy behind the eyeball-mouth-fiend even looks a bit like Kev Walker-era Hammerstein without his hat on.
Searching for Robocop reference for my last comp entry I stumbled across an old Robocop on a unicorn meme. I thought if Robocop can do it so can Dredd! (I also wanted to practice horses and painting and it was going to be my Christmas card but I didn’t finish it in time)

Cool, IATS. Did you sketch that just in Photoshop?
Dirty Santa Frank is sooooo funny. It's that strategic Teddy bear I think... :) Lovely inework on that Jeremiah McAlester waned poster, love the detailing on the pistol and colours.

We're all big fans of your work
Thanks peeps.
Always good to see your stuff LRC - would really love to have a crack at colouring one of your drawings.
This character design is for a potentially extremely exciting personal collaborative project I'm working on with a friend of mine who is a very good cg artist. Don't want to say too much in case nothing ever comes of it, but will post/link to more stuff if and when the ball gets rolling...

it's shaping up lovely although I'm SLIGHTLY panicking about lettering.
Very cool man, Akira V Dredd ;)
Although, the little space ships with red flame hanging around his gun kinda look like little 'peew-peew' bullets cos of the proximity and similar tangents dredds lawgiver. Just so you know!
That is arsom Dan but be careful there are people out there who will drag your art over hot coals for not being true to the original design. But saying that they probably don't go any further than the movie threads.
V
Dan if you keep churning out art like that bike you may well end up in the prog. So keep pissing people off. How about some artistic licence on the Judge uniform?
V
What with all the discusion on the lawmaster i thought i'd drop this on. A bit of artistic licence i admit but what the heck..

All kinds of Dredd awesomeness going on here!
Matt - dont see any perspective problems on that Dredd myself. Absolutely spot on.
Also i want to ask, (and i hope i'm not being too nosy), but is there a reason you havent been in the prog yet?
I only ask because i know you've done some 'proper' comics work, you're a freelance artist (i think!), and your works frikkin' amazing!
Is it a case of not submitting anything, or they dont pay enough, or...?
Again, apologies if i'm being a bit nosy! (I do have a very big nose!)
That's absolutely brilliant Ghistpockets
Neil Ford I prostrate myself before thee! Sublime.
How do achieve that fine hatching? Is it Manga Studio?
...I'm finding the shortcuts and tool placement a bit whack, would you have any advice to make the transition of knowledge a little easier?
BTW mad sketch!
Neil Ford I prostrate myself before thee! Sublime.
How do achieve that fine hatching? Is it Manga Studio?
Ha ha, thanks man! Yeah, did the sketch in manga studio, about 6000pixels wide, exported into corell painter to apply some lip gloss etc, then shrunk it down to 900pix or so for the web.
Ooh, nice. So when you say 'screenprint', do you mean kind of Olly Moss poster style?
Mygrimmbrother I do believe you are the nicest fellow I've met on the web... :) Thank you very much indeed!

I am absolutely bloody terrified of markchilly's stag-man thing. The eyes, the eyes... I mean, it's brilliant, but I may never sleep again because of it.

It's a fine fine image SuperSurfer, and I feel a bit of a shit-bag for not putting it up on the blog. Sorry. No worries Chris. Entirely my fault for pontificating and not sending it to you. Stick to keeping the blog nice and neat.
Thats a gorgeous bit of work there, Woolly. Is it for a larger peice/project your working on?
Woolly, I want to have your babies.
Thanks chaps!
@Matt - yeah, in the absence of a brief/script I always end up drawing faces - I have a nebulous idea for a wee exhibition of various mugshots, passports etc with wee snips of text, so a narritive builds as you view each peice. Can't write worth a damn though... lol.
Anyway, one from last night...

Nope, the boohaha around Miricleman was enough to sink that, but you can pick up the issues for a couple o quid each on ebay, well worth it, V for vendetta etc also in it.
Must have been during the teenage period when you shun comics for girls.
I've only just noticed the face in the red on a second look!
In the 34 years of reading the prog, first copying the figures and drawing my own versions of them this is the first time I've drawn Rogue.

I've only just noticed the face in the red on a second look!
And above 'Emperor' there is a skull shape in the blood splatter.
Major Magnum is ringing bells in the memory banks. Anybody got a rough idea what issues that would be?
Haven't read that story since it was first published and all I can think is mid 80's
Cheers Radiator - and that card is a winner, I trust it went down well?
radiator happy birthday spelled with dogs is great!
filip - if you shrink that head down by to about 85% of it's current size that'll improve that image immeasurably.
That's why I love this board, the hints, tips and all round great advice you get.

Hi all
I've been looking at the Weekly TAB of Doctor Who and decided to contribute but I’m not too sure how I go about it.
Do I have to join somewhere?
Would any of you kind ladies or gentlemen care to post this on my behalf?
Obviously it’s Davros minus all the pipes and wires. I just thought he’s be a good subject to practice some pen work and in light of the Doctor WTF topic the Curious Who by CrazyFoxMachine I thought it might interest some of you.

Love it Chris. What are you inking with these days? Is it a brush?
Well, a bit of everything really Matt - can't quite make my mind up. For this one I did all the linework with a Rotring Artpen, followed by a Pentel Brushpen to get the brush effects. Wish I could get some of the loose-ness of this pic into my comics stuff, but it never quite works out that way.

Emperor: If only that were the case! :) Doing a comic in 2000ad would be a definite career highlight! I think I need to do some more comic stuff before that happens tho!
Didn't Lance Henrikson get wacked by them all aswell?
Oops my ignorance is showing! I'm a bit out of the loop. I am stuck on a prison colony after all! ;) it would be a cool project, do you know how to get in contact with the powers that be? Just to say hey let them know I'm about.
Didn't Lance Henrikson get wacked by them all aswell?
Bah! There goes my theory how dare it be shot to shit by the facts.
Yes you are correct. Lance got blasted in the first Terminator movie, cut in half by the Alien Queen (though technically he was a droid or artificial human and "survived", only he was written out of the next one by Sigourneys ego )
And died in the first Aliens vs Predator film as Charles Weyland of what is presumably the forerunner of the Weyland Yutani mega-corp.
Corking Joker there. Have you shown DC or Marvel your portfolio?
Oh man. I hate to be that guy but ol' Lance was in Alien3, just not as the android Bishop.
..........
So.....how do you post an image then?

@Krombasher - the comeover is the haircut of the desperate and dammned. A man with a comeover is capable of anything. Except growing hair on top of his head of course. And women. Meeting women is tough too.

Sorry to add another Judge Death image to the thread quite so soon. Complete coincidence, I promise.

This is really not something you should be apologising for.
Your artwork is beautiful.
