Help me hivemind your my only hope!
My son Minihuff has been lucky enough to receive a Mac from a friend and I was going to load Photoshop 8 onto it as this is the software he has worked on before.
However the Mac he has got is a Mac OS X 10.1.2 and Photoshop 8 needs at least a Mac OS X 10.4.11. Is there a way i can upgrade?
The added complication is its not connected to the web (no idea how to do that for a Mac either!)
Any advice (not involving chedder or wensleydale) gratefully received!!!
The Mac in question is almost certainly a Power PC rather than Intel-based, which is going to be the start of your troubles... You'll need to check that PS 8 runs on Power PCs - which I have a bad feeling about. I'd check - if it does, then:
Question 1: Does the Mac have a firewire port? If not, Tiger (as 10.4 is known) may be a problem.
Question 2: How do you normally connect to the internet? If you can stick an ethernet cable into your regular router/modem, then plug the other end in and the Mac should know what to do.

Should automatically detect any wireless networks as well. The Macs in my house get everything on our street for about five houses in either direction ...
Cheers!

True, true, but unless it's a laptop I doubt that a 10.1-era Mac has built in WiFi...
Huff, when you say Photoshop 8, do you mean PS Elements 8, or Photoshop CS-1?

Arse. I thought Apple were fitting Airport cards by that stage. It'd help to know what sort of Mac it is, really -- iMac, tower, laptop? Can we get a clue, Huffster?
Edit to add: Yeah, it's going to be a G4 of some variety ... the G5s started shipping with 10.2. Can you tell us what the machine looks like, Proudhuff?
Cheers
Jim
At work just now, so when I get home I'll take a photo and stick it up here.. and try and work out some of the other answers too

Ah, a G4 PowerPC desktop, Jim was right. That (probably) won't have WiFi, but it will have ethernet and firewire ports, so there's some traction there. We still use three of these in the office, they're old but great little machines. The bad news: I don't think Photoshop Elements 8 will run on ours, and they've had regular OS upgrades.
Apparently, 10.4 will run on a G4 "sunflower" iMac, but you should keep in mind that this machine is -- what? -- eight years old minimum? There's probably more processing power in Minihuff's mobile phone so I wouldn't imagine that using Photoshop would be any fun at all.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ...
Cheers
Jim
Cheers gentle readers, the way things are going recently I kinda suspected this would be the case, anyone wanting to buy an un-used Photshop elements 8? :(
This is the blighter...

the gubbings ( stop me if I get too techy)

Again thanks for the attention, one last question is there any version of Photoshop that would run on it?
cheers chaps!
A modicum of Brunost forced into the cd tray should solve the problem.

Photoshop 7.0 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ADOBE-PHOTOSHOP-7-MACINTOSH-COMMERCIAL-UK-RETAIL_W0QQitemZ290399879303QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_Software_Software_SR?hash=item439d2e8087#ht_4470wt_941) and Photoshop CS (can't find an eBay listing for that) should both run in OSX 10.1.
10.1 contains the 'Classic' environment, however, which means that the previous version of the OS (OS9 or "Classic") will launch itself if you try to run software not written for OSX -- so if you installed and ran PS 6.0 or 5.5 then both of these would also run.
IMO, Adobe haven't added what I would call a 'compelling' feature since 5.5, with the sole exception of Smart Objects, and 5.5 ran on my G4 tower with a mere 384Mb of RAM far more reliably than the piece-of-crap that is Photoshop CS3.
Cheers!
Jim
Cheers Jim I take back everything I ever said! That's a beer in the tap for your good self.
I'm orf to track down some double Glochester see if that will do the trick!
