Title: iPad app
Post by: FieldyAU on 19 April, 2010, 09:36:59 AM
Hi, picked up an iPad whilst in the us last week and had a good look at the marvel app for it, first impressions were good and as i now live abroad I would love to be able to get back into 2000ad via a similar 2000ad app. I did have a look around and noticed the click wheel app on iPhone but also noticed poor reviews and some posts on here talking about how slow some of the updates have been recently..

Anyway I'm sure the subject has been raised before me but would love to see a 2000ad app in the near future,.

I'm hoping 2000AD and Comixology come to some arrangement - but, in the meantime, grab one of the many CBR/CBZ readers available and then buy the CBZ from http://www.clickwheel.net

They're pricey (as compared to other digital comics) but cheaper than buying the print version.

The only thing that has prevented me buying one is the lack of a USB port...surely the next gen will have them?

It wont. Ever. Here's why: Apple tend not to move backwards - and for them, including a USB socket is a backwards step. The iPad has (like the iPhone/iPod) a dock connector that plugs into a USB port - so, in effect, it IS a usb port (albiet a proprietary one). Not sure what you want a usb socket for, if it's to plug in a digital camera then apple have an adaptor for that, if it's other hardware then you'll need more than just a plug - you'll also need drivers to get the device to work, and apple don't appear to want to open their system up in that way.

Thanks for the info, PJ.

Both of our computers are macs, so I assumed the quickest way to share info between them would be a USB. I suppose instead of a glorified kindle I was thinking along the lines of a "smaller laptop" (for word and itunes basically, in addition to reading and web access), but I guess that's not what it's for...! Still want one.

Set 'em both up on the same MobileMe or Dropbox account and share the files via synced folder through "the Cloud" ...

Cheers

iPads, assuming they're like their smaller bretheren, are more aimed at being tied to a single computer - so you sync music, etc up with one master computer. Though, as Jim has said, dropbox* or other service will be your friend.

Right now, handling files seems a bit of a dogs dinner (at least when you transfer from one place to another). I suspect this will be simplified in software.

*Dropbox is incredible, and I'd recommend it to anyone putting together a comic.
