Title: Script sounds - broken glass
Post by: The Enigmatic Dr X on 29 June, 2010, 10:14:39 AM
I was working on a script last night. A character gets thrown through the air by a demon into a glass screen. (Well, it could happen).

The panel description is:

BUIST smashing into the screen behind the desk. The impact is like a car crash; she is dead, a broken marionette in an explosion of glass.

There's no speech in the panel, but I think it could do with some sound effects. Thing is, I'm shockingly bad at coming up with these. "Tinkle" just doesn't cut it. "Crash" is naff. Any ideas? Or just leave the violence of the scene to the artist?

If I go with your idea you get to have a suicidal copper or a demon named after you.

I's start it with a 'K' because it's got a nice hard edge to it.
SOmething like 'Kkrrrrishhh' perhaps?

"Ssktshh"

Multiple 'S's makes a sibilant, which is too soft for an impact.

TBH, it's possible to over-think this sort of thing. As long as the letterforms offer plenty of opportunities to make spiky, splintery shapes, the onomatopoeic aspect is less important. A simple KRAAAASH would probably suffice, or perhaps a SKTASH?

Cheers

Jim

Try to avoid onomatopoeia that may later become an offensive word. I know you can't predict these things but DO try.

The Ss sound was supposed to represent the sound of the glass starting to crack before it finally shatters.

That'll look pants not the page. It's all right angles and verticals, plus it's not dramatic enough -- that's the sound of someone dropping a wine glass!

I remember a few years ago that John Wagner went through a phase of sneaking fruity sound effects into his Dredd scripts, like:

"WANKAA!", "WAAAANK!" etc....

Think I'll go with "KTASH". If the thing is ever done, the letterer can always change it.

It's all about retaining control while creating the illusion of empowerment.

Needs a hard and dramatic K at the start, but I don't think it needs Tish - Ktish just sounds like a club comedian having a punchline punctuated by a drummer.

In fact just skip the vowels and have Krrsssh!!

Good choices would be:

Skkrsshhh

or

Kkrsshh

I might be shite at sound effects but I'm avoiding anything that makes me think "b'dm tish", like the cymbal clash at the end of a bad joke.

Excellent. Anyone would think you did this for a living.

All well and good, but in over-rated 'reality' breaking a big pane of glass actually makes an initial very sharp, loud cracking sound as the tension on the sheet is broken, before all the shards start parting with the more familiar 'krsssh' sound.  I'd vote for KRAKAAASH.

See the 'OnomontoPOWia' archive http://www.heromachine.com/category/onomontopowia/ (http://www.heromachine.com/category/onomontopowia/) for some superhero glass breaking sound effects amongst others, such as this:
