During last nights yap shop a number of people had a few games of globulos.

So we got to talking about a game night.
How many people would be interested in this?
What night would be good? Tuesday or Thursday? We don't want to clash with the Yap Shop Wednesday chat.
Also... it would be good to change up the games week to week.
Possible Games: (must be free... preferably browser based & low required specs)
Globulos
Quake Live
Battlefield Heroes
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Chess
any others?
Most of us don't have X-box live or that sort of lark but maybe those of you who do should organize something on that too.
Please reply with suggestions.
Excellent suggestion!
I rarely get allow to the yap shop as I'm usually making shit up, but this'd be good.
Well I'm now registered on Globulos and Quake Live. I've played Quake quite a bit in the past and am getting my eye back in. It depends on how many people are interested but we could always get a team together.
My Quake Live profile:

I doult if my connection is suitable for anything other than the simplist of games.
And I am crap at games....
and I utterly refuse to play chess for personnel reasons...
But I will accept monetary bribes to be a cheerleader..
Dust your pom-poms off we are having a whipround. ;)
We can probably sort out some Draughts or Othello or something too ;)
Yahoo has all the classics covered and other stuff besides

Emp, Ive sent you a friend request on quake live... I'll give you a game one of the days... Im terrible at it, but its well fun

OK got the request - I did wonder if it was a random weirdo but as you are called MonkeySexNinja I am still unsure if I was wrong ;)
Its a good name
I'd be up for this if my feeble tech skills allow it.

I'm intrigued by this - did you have a traumatic early chess experience doc?
I refuse to play chess because I just can't get my head round it. I know the basic mechanics of play, but I just cannot plan or strategise in the right way, I just don't knowe what I'm doing at all. Stupid game.
I'd be well up for a backgammon tournement though!
Globulos is quite funny. I like it.

All the simpler games are run through Flash and the like so should work straight out of the (virtual) box.
Quake Live requires you to install a plugin but it was all about as quick an easy as it could be and was done in minutes. We'll figure out how to get everyone in the same game while everyone is sorting it out, I'd also recommending reading the manual and doing some of the training games to get your eye in (if you've played Doom or Quake before it should all be familiar).
I spent many happy hours on Quake 2 (I think) but the next one left me cold - seemed designed solely for multiplayer games and the linear-gameplay for one player was a bit boring.
I've just signed up: rexvanryn
Now to figure out how to get it to play a game...
I think they're all two player games. You have to wait for someone else to come in, or else pop into a game arena that already has another player in it.
Got it!
Signing up for Quake Live now.
I signed up for Quake Live earlier today and had a run around (by gum, it's been a while!). name: CraveNoir
I am Katooie.

In Globulos when you're setting up a new game, at the top of the new game screen you can also click VS or MELEE to start one of the multiplayer games.
You still have to wait for enough players but you can invite people from the lobby once you're in the room.
Sent a friend request on quake live to everyone who poster their username here.
Don't be afraid of the monkeysexninja!
I got the game working eventually in the tutorial mode, but every time I tried to join a game it didn't work...
Won't be able to get another try until late in the weekend.
Habven't tried quakelive yet, but inspired by this thread I downloaded the original quake on steam last night and had hours of nostalgic fun trying to remember where all the beasties jump out from and where the secret areas are. Great fun!
Right, I've joined up Quake Live - how the fuck do I turn around?!
I'm Metaluna by the way...
M.
Dude, use the mouse to turn around.
:D

I joined a game but was booted for dropping packets :o I wonder if it was my using a wireless connection.
I'll give it another shot tonight if I can, might try and jump in a game one of you is already playing (not sure how you start a game, it might be simpler to get a duel game going with a couple of you, to ease into this).
Dude, I tried the mouse and it didn't work!

The solution is obvious...
CHEESE
Vote for Quake. I'm "maximisaev" .
BTW: I invited you all
Quake Live, I'm "Tordelback"
I tried cheese. I don't think that was A SERIOUS SUGgESTION HERE'S ME ASKING FOR GENUINE HELP AND ALL YOU DO IS MOCK ME!!!!!!111111111111!!!!!!
Ahem.That's how you respond, right?
I have a wireless mouse, that could be it.
M
If it's a wireless mouse, maybe that's the problem. :-*

Did you try pushing it in further?
Anyone know how you make a clan?
Tried another game and PnkBuster booted me out for "no heartbeat" - it might be a firewall thing as when I connect PnkBuster asks for access (despite it asking before and my allowing it). I allowed it again but it clearly has problems.

I'm not sure, but:
Edit My Profile - Clan Tag: _____. Tag can only be 5 chars long plus color. Let's try "YSGN" clan tag.

Might be a silly question but where do you do the editing?
2Emperor
So it is.
I added "TOOTH" ;)
Sooooo next question: What does it mean and can you do anything with it?
I think this clan tag must be one for all. So let's decide what label we have to choose. Usually this is an abbreviation. Like "YSGN".In game it will appear as
"YSGN maximisaev" or "YSGN mightyemperor". Clans are needed for beauty and convenience =). We are all in one team - this is the point, i think.
Step 2: For easier to find friends in the game, you can use this method:

Step 3: All that's left to find out is how to create private game???
I'm all signed up: Tulkas01.
Will join any clan.
SO rusty it's just not funny.

How do you do that?
It's sad

So let's simply find a game with friends on it. (using a friend-filter)
Ah - 'beat' is used pretty much it as it is in sailing (facing at about 45 degrees to where you want to go). Now we're talking my language.
Tried to join another live game, Windows pops up a message about it changing something or other (default colours?), Punk Buster pops up as requiring access to the Internet through ZoneAlarm, mt mouse won't move from the middle of the screen without some fierce fiddling and then Punk Buster boots me from the game. All this on a different computer. Looking in ZA there is a PnkBstrA.exe but also a PnkBstrB.exe. I've allowed them both so will have to wait and see what happens when I try again but if it keeps up it looks like I'll not be able to get into a live game.
Got into a game, everything seemed to go OK and then PnkBstr booted me for "losing key packets". I'm on a PC connected through an Ethernet cable, I'd have thought that wouldn't cause problems (when I was using a wireless laptop last time).
edit: Seems it is a firewall thing, I'm loath to shut it down completely but will give it a spin later.
Do you have to use punkbuster? That doesn't install with the extension, does it? Can you disable that while playing Quake Live?

Reading up on problems with PnkBstr it seems it is compulsory on servers which run it - its anti-cheating software so making it optional would seem to defeat the purpose ;)
Turning the firewall off worked OK. I was pretty horrible in the team games and was, embarrassingly, told to "go away" so I did. Some more practice might be needed. ;)
frak online gaming shits me sometimes, people need to learn that its about having fun its not fucking life so get over it if someone acidently frags you, shit happens. (please not not related to this but Emperor being told to go away just made me think how these no lives behave sometimes).
CU Radbacker
Well in their defence:
- I was awful - my accuracy was way down and I was more a liability to the team
- I did keep pressing "next match" so some people would have been over-exposed to my terrible gameplay, I should have left and joined another game just to spread it around a bit and not annoy any one person ;)
That said:
- I deliberately chose Clan Arena as you can't injure your team (although it is more brutal because everyone starts with full weapons, so perhaps I should try another game type).
- I was largely there to make sure everything was working OK (which it almost is but I still lose focus when first starting a game as I get a Windows message about it not working with the standard colours or style or something which means I can not only not play the game but it is difficult to do anything) and I had got the hang of using the hot keys to change weapons (as opposed to the numbers). Plus this is a new computer so I wanted to test how that worked.
- It isn't like the games mean anything - it is not building to something like it would if this was in some kind of league.
- I was working in a support role, following a better player, helping pin down opponents and lobbing grenades around.
- I got a few frags, survived a number of rounds and we won a couple - granted this was largely due to the quality of the other players
That said I need to put in more work on moving dodging, strafejumping and generally improving my game - the sad thing is that I've played most of the Doom games (and finished most of them) and some Quake before, it looks like my FPS skills have got awfully rusty since ;)
I had my first go in a series of frag-limited Intermediate free-for-alls with a bunch of very polite Polish chaps, some (okay, one) of whom were actually worse than me. In that kind if game nobody minds a lollygagging newbie they can vape to increase their kills. I am absolutely awful at it, though - and me, completer of Quakes 1 and 2, Hexen, Dark Forces, various Dooms and Wollfensteins - but crucially all in single player campaign mode. Ah well.

Hmmm... I dont have punkbuster installed on my computer but maybe a version of it is included in the firefox extension.
