Title: Durham Red
Post by: Patrick Ward on 16 August, 2010, 12:40:33 PM
Well, I thought I'd just make a start. Very much a work in progress. Hair, suspenders, eyes are just place holder. Legs obviously not done. Everything else needs lots of work.

A lot of artists tend to make Durhams .... brests somewhat larger and "perkyer" Glad to see some reality creeping in. ;)

Johnnystress - Thanks. Long way to go yet

TordelBAck - Oh no you can't! I just haven't put the rubber wrinkles in yet...

The Doctor Alt 8 - well I'm 43 so I think I've got passed that stage.  :| I spent  along time going between a slightly more realistic and the more elongated figure from the comics. I settled on this as the longer bodied just didn't feel right but I may give her more modelesque(?) proportions later. Her only mutation was the vampirism so she was supposed to be naturally proportioned. I'm tempted to do a totally emaciated version too. but the main goal for now is to get it into a game engine and looking good.

The Cosh - well I've missed a lot .. its not finished   :D

vzzbux - thanks I think.  :)

Don't get me wrong... that was just a gentle tease.... I am just in awe of all you creative types.

Although I could see some less mature types thinking she is... underdeveloped. Which time period will you be basing this on?

 :D  No worries.

This is based on the Scarlet Cantos. I'm not following religiously as every panel is different but I'll give it a shot.

So how does this work? Is she wearing suspenders over a rubber leotard, or rubber leggings over suspenders?

You really are leaving the keks as late as possible aren't you?

Well thats the tricky bit. It took me a while to work it out and I still don't think I'm right.
But she's essentially got rubber/pvc/leather trousers on that go up over her hips. (in one of Mark H's drawings he's written that they're leather but he always seems to paint them like they're rubber or PVC) Over them are black stockings and suspenders. On her hips she has the holster/belt thing that also attaches to the cod/lady piece (?) which lies OVER the suspenders. Then there's the bodice which stretches down from her ears (she has some kind of translation device/thing over each ear  ), fastens to make the collar, then continues all the way down to just below her navel where there's two press studs fastening it to either the belt, trousers or the codpiece thing. At the back its shortened to just over the suspender belt.
That's what I think anyway. I know its probably a bit in depth but I needed to try and work it out so I could build it.

Adrian ..   :D  I'm just working my way down ...   And keks! I thought that was just a Scouse phrase! Not heard that for years.

I've got some more pics but they're too big to put up here with the size limit so I've got them here. I'd appreciate some advice from anyone in the know.. I've had to do a mish mash of designs from different images as they're not always very clear.

Cheers.

Keep bringing the updates, Patrick! Great stuff. To post images on here without screwing up the format, you can go up to 750 pix wide (800 if you don't mind your avatar/details being squished to the right)

OK .. here's one, but you can't see much at this size. Still very much a work in progress and I'm looking for advice from elsewhere on the wrinkles and how the straps would all be interacting with the material. I'm getting myself confused.

I drew a Durham Red pinup a while back, determined to draw her costume accurately. I eventually came to the conclusion that it makes no functional sense whatsoever. Looks pretty though. :D

I think you're doing a cracking job with the model but I don't think that even Mark Harrison knows how her costumes function.

Hi Patrick,

I guess the best thing is just to google lots of PVC/Leather catsuits and see where the creases occur.

Tough job etc...

I wonder if you might be able to get a better handle on the creases by making the material more like the final one, and comparing that with photoref.

Are you planning to animate the model at all? Of course that opens up how you animate the creases...

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve . .yes I've been googling lots .. and lots and lots. Good job I can't get sacked for some of the stuff google brings up.

Well the intention is to get a game model out of it and you can't animate creases in games so that's not been a concern. If it was for a proper high res render then you'd create multiple morph targets for each joint and each major area of deformation and put other layers of deformation over that which a huge job and not one I'd do for fun. If it was for a posed shot then I'd leave the creases until after she's posed so they'd make sense.

I'm experimenting with the best ways to do the stockings now. Very entertaining.

Tell me about it, I was doing a street scene once at work and googled 'manhole' for some photo reference...

There are things you can't unsee...

The stockings should look quite cool, there are some great details in the costume. Depending on the version you go for, it seemed to start off quite snug, but the later versions looked a bit more antique/creased.

Thanks heaps for posting this! I was unaware of Zbrush, but have just spent the morning investigating further. I've looked at Maya before, but Zbrush has really impressed me! Great work on Durham Red by the way. Can't wait to see the finished piece!

Thanks everyone. Not spent too much time on her recently. Other things taking up my time. But this is where she's at now. The stockings aren't transparent so they're hiding all the wrinkles in the leather trousers. Her hair is still temporary, her face needs work, there's no gun and she still needs bits of lacy garter things.

Once again Patrick, THANKS for posting this! It's looking great! I have gone off on such an artistic tangent as a result of you posting this here. I really must get onboard this who Zbrush thing. It's an incredible tool! Not sure if others have seen this... but I found a Judge Death render on the Zbrush forum:

It is a 3D CGI model isn't it? The term 'model' can be used for CGI as well as the the physical variety. Unless you were joking in which case please disregard this.

And yes it looks great.

Cheeky bu**er! of course it'll get finished.  :D  Eventually. I hope. Depending on circumstances beyond my control. I maybe getting busy soon so it may well have to be dropped for a while. Sadly that's why Johnny alpha was never finished. This doesn't pay the mortgage.

! Wasn't meaning to be cheeky! Just projecting my own problems I have with drawing a line and calling things finished. There's always some other detail that can be added it seems! Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing this in it's final pose! If I bump into Mr Alpha, I'll be sure to ask him if he'll throw a few creds your way to help with the mortgage...

Minus .. I'm really sorry to have to be the one to tell you this . but . .its Johnny .. I mean you know he had a great life, lots of adventures, some good friends, lots of bounties collected and all .. well ..  you see age catches up with us all, eventually, and it caught up with Johnny.
Well maybe it wasn't quite age that caught up with him as much as ... well what I'm saying is that, well, Mr Alpha, Johnny .. well, he's gone to be with Wulf.
Up there in the sky.
He died.
I'm so sorry.  ;)  :D
