Title: Influence Maps
Post by: pauljholden on 09 September, 2010, 12:27:28 AM
I'm sure some of you have seen this current meme, I don't usually bother as they usually seem a bit pointless, but I was interested to see what others had done, so I figure some might be interested in mine. So here it is (on my blog!)

http://www.pauljholden.com/blog/2010/09/09/meme-influence-map/

Would love to know what others think (it's always fascinating to find out what other people see in your art - especially if you can't see it)

And, if you fancy doing one, then you can download the file here: http://fox-orian.deviantart.com

Pretty cool idea. Wish I had more time. Would love to make one, myself.

Love reading these as they sometimes lead me to discovering artists I'm unaware of currently.

Especially some of the European comic creators folks are influenced by.

It's a meme - if you don't join in then it's pointless!

Interesting read that Paul...those influence maps are a cool concept :)

I wish I could draw/paint...i'm not a bad writer but I was blessed with the ability to be as sh*t at art as is humanly possible

Yeah, once I started browsing through some old comics online it occurred to me just how much influence the 60s comics (before I was born) had been - all because they were what my dad used to buy me. One of my earliest memories I have is sitting up in the attic of a house we lived in between '74-'82 (and I'm pretty sure I was 5/6 - so '75/'76) crying because my mum wouldn't let me cut out pictures from a Century 21 Annual (which had stopped publication by 69).

Dave Gibbons and Brian Bolland were the two  2000AD artists who influenced me the most but now it's more European and Manga artists like Ladronn, Gimenez, Masamune Shirow [manga] and Akira's Katsuhiro Otomo.

That's really interesting and I can see how they influence you PJ.

BTW - is that john McCrea with the artwork? He looks like a young Louie Walsh

That's John. John's the only person on the list who I've spent who I know personally, so I figured a photo would be good.

My intention was to look at three sets of influences:

Artists I looked at when I was a kid, artists that I looked to as a teenager/when I got back into comics and artists that I look at now and think 'Blimey, I wish I could draw like that'.

But it all got a bit muddled...

Nice approach! And it looks like we both had our comic book revelations around the same time. I was made aware of comics between '75 and '81 but I didn't actively buy and collect them until '82.
