You can't go wrong with the first couple of Judge Dredd case files.

"The Best of Judge Dredd" features a superb selection of the best strips that Dredd has starred in, from the historical (the first ever Dredd strip) to the definitive (America), and including the weird (Otto Sump), wonderful ("The Judge Child", "The Cursed Earth") and downright scary ("PJ Maybe").

Perhaps winkle out of him what his favourite stories were and/or when he started reading - you can then get him something that'll provide a proper nostalgia "hit" and if he enjoys that then you are sorted for birthdays and Xmas presents for years. The Best of Dredd seems a good general one that should press all the right buttons but we might be able to focus the ideas down a bit with more information.

Get him a subscription! Or, if that's too much (it's not 8p a week any more!) show your deep love and thoughtfulness by secretly buying him a copy of 2000AD each week til xmas, and give them all to him together. It'll cost you about £20 inc the more-expensive xmas three-weeker, and if you start with tomorrow's it's the perfect jumping-on issue, with new stories starting.

Hey Crimbohelp, if you can get a relative or somone to go halfies with you, you could get him a commission from a genuine 2000AD artist, for £35.  That's a really thoughtful, unique and imaginative prezzie right there!

His name is PJ Holden and he's excellent.

You can see a thread of his work here http://www.2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,29805.0.html (http://www.2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,29805.0.html)

Thats a good idea but if you buy just one prog then buy prog 2011 which is the Xmas issue that is out well before Xmas.

Definately.Find out what strips he liked and go from there....

Yeah, but that does potentially give the game away. If my wife were to suddenly broach the subject of my favourite 2000AD strips for 'no reason', my immediate and first response would be 'you're thinking of buying me a trade collection aren't you?'- seeing as she's never once in ten years expressed any interest, except when panicking over her character in Minty.

If you let us know the rough period when he would have been reading, we could tell which volume of the Judge Dredd casefiles would contain the stories from that time.

I am glad you say "potentially" as it depends on how you go about it and how you word it as its not difficult to get information out of someone without them thinking about why you are talking about it and making notes mentally.

Start a conversation about the new JD film/comic and go from there....That gives the perfect reason to start a conversation about the film and then after a short while steer the conversation towards the comic and then you would find out what you want to know and its unlikely that they would second guess what you are up to.

My wife knows nothing about it, she regularly buys me GN's at xmas, Birthdays and anniversary time. She doesn't ask what to get- she just hedges her bets and buys what takes her fancy. Sometimes they are hits, sometimes they are misses- but the thought is always appreciated and I almost always read them. She's even bought me stuff I'd never have bought myself but I have enjoyed immensely. The only time I have ever asked if she minded if I took it back and exchanged it was the Strontium Dog Case Files 5 (to which I objected strongly on principal). She was happy for me to do it and I got something I would actually read.

I have a dilemma.

My wife has procured a motorized Lego AT-AT for my Christmas. For me. From her.

My boy has asked for... a Lego AT-AT. For him. From Santa.

What to do?

(Answer at present: buy him a snowspeeder).

Buy another Lego AT-AT and really go to town on recreating Hoth!! Although they are expensive (and he is going to get to play with your one right, right?) but availability on the snowspeeder doesn't seem that great, although checking... one comes with the Wampa base set
www.amazon.co.uk/Lego-Star-Wars-Hoth-Wampa/dp/B003A2JBIM/

What about the Snowtrooper Battle Pack:

www.amazon.co.uk/LEGO-Star-8084-Snowtrooper-Battle/dp/B002KCNV3Y/

And/or Echo base:

www.amazon.co.uk/LEGO-Star-Wars-7749-Echo/dp/B001U3ZMH2/

So you could have the full battle.

Or a Lego AT-ST:
