It is tricky outside the US - you should let your LCS know about it and they might be able to organise something. There is the problem of extra shipping from the US and some shops give them away to folks who spend a certain amount, but this isn't so common now and most give them away for free and have in-store events so do OK out of it. You'll need to check closer to the time.

Forbidden Planet gave them away for free:

http://forbiddenplanet.co.uk/blog/2010/free-comic-book-day-at-fpi/

Bleeding Cool did a series of reports across the UK which might give you a taste of what might be going on this year:

London:
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/05/01/fcbd-london-reports/

Manchester:
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/05/01/fcbd-manchester-reports-in-by-bevis-musson/

Lancaster:
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/05/01/fcbd-lancaster-reports-by-mike-charlton/

Newcastle:
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/05/01/fcbd-newcastle-reports-by-jamie-sanders/

Closer to the time I'm sure we can assemble some information in this thread or a new one but the best initial move would be to ask your friendly neighbourhood comics shop if they are getting involved.

I know my local thrill merchant did FCBD the year before last; I wasn't able to get to it last year, but presumably they'll also be doing it this year.

Will this thing have stories specially commissioned, or just be reprints?

Usually Forbidden Planet in Glasgow get a load of the free comic book day stuff in, I've never been in on the day but they tend to stick random selections in the bag with your purchase for a while after. Nice to think someone could get a taste of 2000AD when they're buying something else, if they're not sucked in by that cover then they're mad.

Val Semeiks drew a Wagner Dredd in prog 1374. Isn't that a misspelling of Semekis, who I presonally, remember as being a Conan artist for the US, which is why I think he's been picked?

That's right, The Savage Sword of Conan, Web of Spider-Man, Wolverine, The Flash and plenty of JLA strips.

Schweet! Stevie was a tad concerned about this due to its conspicuously absence from the list reported in the latest Comic Shop News (http://csnsider.com/)* (distributed  by Diamond & available for free from comic shops).

Unsurpising though given that their only acknowledgement of Tooth in recent years has been the announcement of Romita's Jr's cover for Mega-City Masters vol 2. No piccie though; doubtlessly they needed the column space for Marvel's latest gone-back-to-press-with-a-variant-cover or the resurrection of Richie Rich.

It's main focus does seem to puff pieces for DC, Marvel & Dynamite. Or when they're especially daring, the latest licensing of some piece of tat ephemera that the editors fondly remember from their childhoods (Captain Action anyone?)

We really need a concerted effort of hitting them up with Tooth-related nominations for their annual Red K awards.

*Oddly enough this also ran a feature entitled 10 for 2010, spotlighting their choice of the most significant writers who've contributed to their US-centric perspective of the form over this past year. No prizes for guessing that almost half of this list comprised of peeps who cut their chops for the House of Tharg. You honestly don't need Stevie to tell you Morrison, Millar, Ennis & Moore were all present now do you?  ;)

Just put my order in at the comic shop. Graham mentioned that he wanted to know how many I would like as it costs him to buy them (well I never), I asked how much it costs him and he said 24p a prog. In fact every comic on 'Free Comic Book Day' costs him, obviously not a lot but it all adds up for an independent like him.

Anyway, my order is in and let's just hope he can get the amount I requested (I am paying, it's only fair). So if any of you lot who live in the sticks find it hard to get a copy and really need one, I shall be giving a few away, if I get my total  ;)

Stevie's just been granted a sneaky peak of this by of his local ("Keep yr hands where we can see 'em & no breathing on the pages boy!") & now has to tweet Hans Bjelke for assistance in retrieving his socks.

Blimey, Tharg couldn't have picked a more perfect opening strip. It's the rarely seen gem that simultaneously melted little Stevie's apple-cheeked phizog off whilst setting the tone of the Prog back in '77. Courtesy of the artist whom, to this reader, epitomised 2000ad from its Planck Epoch all the way through the Quasar Age of the MacManus years.

& features the other panel* that was seared into this 8 year old's synapses & shall be carried to his grave.

A brilliant, inspired choice that will hopefully set the US fanboys scurrying for a hit of Thrill Power.

Wow.

Just leave some of the FCBD free 2000AD's behind so non-2000AD readers get a little taste of Thrill-Power, after all we'll have read all the stories in there before but you get someone else hooked (the first one's free Earthlet, the rest is still surprisingly good value ;) ) and they could be a reader for life. :) You should try something different - Elric and Baltimore/Criminal Macabre perhaps? Deadliest Sharks was lettered by our own Jim Campbell, for example.

Definitely, there is plenty of all ages material in there (perhaps a majority):

www.freecomicbookday.com/comics.asp

As has been mentioned, the free comic books cost the shops money, so people going along helps encourage the shops to do it again next year, which can only help comics in general (a key to the measure of success is that it draws in new people, not just the usual folks sniffing around for freebies).

There is an international store locator here:

www.freecomicbookday.com/fcbd_global.asp

So you can find a nearby store that is involved, although if you have to travel far it might be worth phoning them to find out what they are doing for the day.

It really depends on the shop.  There is one near me that goes all out and makes the freebies part of a big sidewalk sale and has a great time.  I've also, though, been to shops that grudgingly admitted that they had some free comics and customers could have one apiece from a small box near the register.

I'll be at the shop near me for my 2000 AD comic first thing that morning, and will thank 'em for it by buying something else, too.  :)

Anyone that is interested and unable to get to a comic shop may be interested to know that I just bought a copy off Ebay. There is a guy selling about 20 x copies for 99p each with no postage charges.

Sorry don't know how to supply a link. Probably best to type in FCBD 2011 and should show up all the free comics for that day as there are about 35 listed.

Gets a mention on Time's website:

Quote2000 A.D.: This lively, smart-assed, frequently beautifully drawn, occasionally ultraviolent series has been running weekly in Britain since 1977, with four to six serials in each issue. A lot of its past and present series have lately been reprinted as graphic novels in the U.S., but the 2000 A.D. Free Comic Book Day special is effectively what you'd get in a typical issue of the British series, including a complete-in-six-pages Judge Dredd story (by John Wagner, Val Semeiks and Cliff Robinson), as well as Sláine, Kingdom, Shakara and Zombo stories, plus a long-out-of-print one-pager by League of Extraordinary Gentlemen  artist Kevin O'Neill. (It's also the only one of these picks that might not be all that kid-friendly; as Dredd might say, use your judgement, citizen!)

The Good Lady and I are in London today, celebrating our wedding anniversary. She has demanded a trip to a shoe shop and so I therefore get a quick look in a comic shop in return. So, if I can find GOSH (I've never managed it yet!) we may pop in.

It's right opposite the far left hand corner (as you look at it) of the  British Museum .   You can't miss it.

Gah - would love to pick up that 2000AD; very curious about the Kev O'Neill strip!  Times like this (and Bristol, and Kapow, and...) I wish I still lived in the UK...

Anyway, will be interesting to hear all about it.

Listed under "Best Bets" by NPR:

Quote2000 AD

A sampler of some notable work from Great Britain's weekly science-fiction comics anthology; for over three decades, 2000 AD has launched many of today's best-known comics creators, and it's still going strong. This FCBD edition contains a fittingly diverse assortment of styles, subjects and approaches; not for the very young.

Happened to be near Forbidden Planet today so picked up a copy.  The old Kevin O'neill Tharg strip was a right blast from the past.  Odd inclusion if the idea is to attract new readers.  Still nice to see it and a nice little item altogether really.

I picked it up today and thought it was a fun little introduction with a good range of strips to draw folk in. Loved the early Tharg strip and was a nice pointer to the comics deep history.

Good job all concerned I say.

Thrillpower in abundance in Marietta, GA, I'm glad to say.  I'm also pleased that the shop that we stopped by has begun carrying 2000 AD for the shelf, and busting open those stupid polybags from Diamond and selling them by the issue.

The very sexy freebie got a prime-place mention in the esteemed The Comics Journal Online. With a nice big print of the lovely Jock cover and the fine line:

Or, y'know, Judge Dredd. Just look at him. He's gonna beat the f
ucking
s
hit
out of you for even thinking of seeing Thor.

Try telling that to an 8 year old.

Bloody loved that strip as a nipper, & have read this reprint almost a dozen times now.

Review at Comics Bulletin:

QuoteEqually split between new stories about old characters and introductions to new(er) 2000 AD creations, the FCBD release is a pretty handy entry point for fans who haven't grown up on the mag. John Wagner's Judge Dredd story "S.A.M." in particular encapsulates the appeal of Dredd without drowning new readers in his convoluted mythology and intimidating back pages. Val Semeiks and Cliff Robinson's comedic art and the bright coloring by Chris Blythe help pull Dredd into the 21st century in a way that doesn't sacrifice any of the character's fierceness.

Dan Abnett and Richard Elson's Kingdom story will likely also appeal to unfamiliar readers who know Abnett mainly for his work on Marvel's cosmic characters, concerning as it does warriors perpetually fighting space bugs. The biggest surprise, though, may come from the Shakara entry, which features truly bold art from Henry Flint and a neatly bleak capsule story that could be the best representation in the release of what 2000 AD is really all about. Namely, creative violence and Dark Star-influenced sci-fi.

As a small taste of a huge bibliography, it's decidedly appetizing.

www.comicsbulletin.com/reviews/130496756343455.htm

I'm impressed by the attention 2000AD's offering has had and the general positive reception too. One thing in 2000AD's favour is that it does rather lend itself to this kind of freebie and you get a good selection of complete stories.

Dark Horse are making their FCBD comics free to download for a limited time only:

Any chance of the 2000AD one popping up on Clickwheel or in the shop?

I'm afraid not, no. If people thought they could just wait and get the free download it would undermine the whole point of the event, which is to get them into their local comic book store. We've had a few people ask why we're not supplying copies to subscribers - retailers pay for these copies as part of an effort to boost their businesses. If we cut them out of the loop, even after the fact, they wouldn't be too happy and it would probably scupper any attempt by us to build on this success with future FCBDs.

However, it's worth adding that we already have a free sampler of 'first episodes' available for download through Clickwheel: http://www.clickwheel.net/features/285

The FCBD 2000AD was a tasty sampler though I did think the line 'Follow the adventures of Slaine/Kingdom/Shakara in 2000AD every Wednesday' after the respective strips was a little misleading for (potential) new readers since the Langley droid is off 'Slaine', 'Shakara' has come to an (apparent) end, and 'Kingdom' is currently on hiatus. As an existing subscriber though I think the best part of the FCBD prog was the 'Damage Report', for which 10/10 to whoever wrote it.  :D

Anyone fancy updating the details here (creators and where the stories were reprinted from)?:

http://comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=226847

I nobly declined to get one so some other Earthlet could experience some thrill-power, but it does mean I'm short on details. Might also want to throw the contents Wake's way so he can update Barney.
