... Because over the past few days i've been reading Alfred Bester's 'The Stars My Destination', in the lovely Gollancz 'sf masterworks' paperback edition. All this time, i've been looking at the cover, and waiting for the OTHER big, scary-looking bald guy with facial tiger stripes, you know; the one who has 'Gambia' on his forehead.
Today, i realised, it's actually a reversed illustration of Gully Foyle, and his tattoo says 'Nomad'.
I hereby invite the entire board to stick their tongues under their bottom lips, waggle their hands, and make 'hnnnnnnn!' noises at me.

Awesome book though!
Great thread title! Made me open it. :D
Because I am so thick I can sometimes even surprise myself. Ghawd!
Yeah, annoyed the hell out of me, too...
What exactly is the reason why everything has to face to the right on covers these days...?
Having just seen the cover on Amazon, I can understand the confusion. It does look like it says Gambia.
Enjoyed the book though. Couldn't find a paper copy of it but did find an audiobook out there. Some of the dialogue is a bit stilted but there are some fantastic concepts.
Arise, thread that documents stupidity, ARISE!
It's a bit stuffy at work and the tv is on. On the tv a man opened a window, and i thought:
"Why is it so stuffy in here, when that man opened a window?".
Oh dear grud.

One of my favourite books, that, and one that I found out about through this board!
I've got the other edition - the orange one with the lovely pulpy paper and the rounded page corners. Gollancz do some really nice design work - I've just got a copy of The Blade Itself, which is a gorgeous looking book. It's little things like that which make me hesitant to switch to ebooks. There are many advantages of the digital format, but I can't help feeling that you lose something.

At the other end of the spectrum, I've got the SF masterworks edition of Bester's The Demolished Man, which has to be one of the ugliest book covers I've ever seen - a garish explosion of early 1990s silicon graphics...

Sadly, all of William Gibson's early novels are only available in similarly horrific early 1990s cover designs. I'd love to be able to buy some swish new editions of the Sprawl trilogy.
reminder to self, must read this book I have heard so many good things about it. I'm more a fantasy fan but i dont mind the odd Sci-fi novel here or there. In fact i might see if i can get it anywheer online now our book shop doesn't have it and looks at me funny when i ask for it.

Another SF classic to read that's just back in print - Limbo by Bernard Wolfe.
I've just finished it and it's really astonishingly ahead of its time...
I just don't feel that i have any right to laugh at stupid folk. I'm really far too stupid myself and it'd be cheeky.
