Title: London MCM Expo 27/29th May 2011
Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 26 March, 2011, 08:35:57 PM
Here's the official link -

http://www.londonexpo.com/ (http://www.londonexpo.com/)

I'm thinking of going to this on the 28th as I can't get to Bristol, due to family stuff (now I did miss a major family birthday meal for Minty so I have to obey the wife for a while). I'll mainly be going for the comics village but will wander about the place to take in the sights and sounds.
Due to it being close I'm thinking of taking Sam, as I took him to one here a couple of years back and he enjoyed it, I think (lets hope they have sorted the queue out).

Anyone else thinking of going along?

I'll have to check my rota, but this is looking possible. The Comics and games bits especially would please my boys. But at the moment, what with changes at work and all, I'm not sure if I'll be off (I have two weeks' holiday just beforehand when my wife is touring North America).

Murky Depths is giving Bristol a miss this year - though I might be there in person - but we have two tables in the MCMExpo's Comic Village, so drop by and say high. It gets lonely in the Excel.

ZARJAZ NEEDS HELP!

The Eagle awards are to be announced at the MCM, but none of the editorial team will be there to go and collect if we win.

IF anyone is planning on going to the event- and they want to be the proud recipient of an Eagle award for the best British B&W comic, sing up...

Ta.

Hmmm... There's a thought. I doubt his Verdant Majesty would oblige- what with this being an award for playing with his toys after class, but he may be prepared to allow a minion to collect.

Now, if only there was someone who worked in the Nerve Centre that had a known history with the Small Press- and who had a good grasp of how something like this would relate to the public- I'll have to ponder on that...

I'll be there on the saturday. If the stars align I'll be dressed up with my good lady wife somewhat similar to this http://scifiandtvtalk.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/alice6.jpg

So I should be easy to spot :o come say hi to me! feel free to express condolences on the event of my 5-yearly foray into the murky world of cosplay.

I will be deciding in the morning if I am going (its 80/20 in favour at the moment) all depends on how much sleep I get at work tonight. If I do go, Sam will be with me so if you see me and I don't say hi straight away its because I will be watching Sam most of the time, so you may have to stand right in front of me to catch my eye!

Some photos of everyone setting up (including the 2000AD table):

That reminds us that the Eagle Awards are tonight apparently, so the FutureQuake chaps do need someone who is there nowish. I'm sure someone from the House of Tharg can pick it up if no one else can.

I'm now at 90/10 on going. I pray for lots of sleep tonight at work, I'm not even taking a book in to read for the first time in ages.

So I'm not tempted to read, that is!

Not the best of nights at work but I'm 100% going with Sam now. With a bit of luck I should be able to pick up a commission that I pre-ordered at KAPOW, from a non 2000AD artist. More of that when I have it.
I hope to see a few forumites during the day, so say hello, I'll be in my personalized badged polo shirt and so will Sam!

His own top that is and not in mine with me!

If only, I had been awake for just under 30 hours by the time I got home.

Anyway here are some of the amazing sketches that I obtained from the artista there!

Leigh Gallagher I had a good old chat with Leigh about Dredd's age and also Pete's commission amongst other things.

Simon Davis Didn't manage to get much of a chat because I kept taking phone calls, yes you know who you buggers are!

Boo I managed to have a chat about the latest Anderson and how amazingly lifelike a few of the panels are. He revealed who Andesron is made up of, very clever indeed. Also he mentioned why she doesn't look 50+, 'who wants to draw an old Anderson'

John McCrea Had a chat about the Boys and comic reading in general.

The last sketch was by Stephen Santos, who was doing trading card sized sketches. I asked him why he had no Dredd and commanded him to rectify that and I would be back to collect it in 10 mins. He obliged  ;)

Here's my take on the day.

I finished work and arrived home and decided to try and get 90 minutes sleep in. That was foiled by Sam waking up, so I stayed awake! I asked Carolyn to ring her friend and ask if her husaband and son wanted to come along to the con. They didn't need asking twice, so at 09:40 we picked them up. An hour later and we were parking the car at the Excel. What a con that is, the convention is 11:00 to 18:00 for the non early birds. Yet the parking costs £5 for 3 hours, £10 for 6 and you guessed it £15 for that extra hour. Now at the Dreddcons I paid about £18 for the day at this underground place close to the con and was happy with that but I resent paying £5 for ONE hour!

Anyway, upstairs we went to the con and still the organisers don't know fuck all about organisation. We queued up for only 90 minutes this time, I know some of you waited over 2 hours (it's better than the 2 hours 50 mins from my last visit). The problem is they have 5 FIVE 5 bloody ticket booths. They had a similar amount for the early birds and I know some of those queued up for over an hour. Imagine if Wembley had ten entrances for 90,000 people, what a JOKE! Another email will be heading over to the organisers soon.

After staring at the scantily clad lasses and doing forceful slaps on the twats who wanted high fives we were in. I did have to stop two lots of lads trying to push past us and couldn't believe one group didn't understand that it was impolite to do such a thing. Let's just say I informed him that if he or his mates tried to get past then they would be on the floor, cheeky gits!

Obviously I went straight over to the comics village and the 2000AD stand. I like to get the layout of all the people I want to see in my mind asp and then do the chats and sketch collecting! The area was quite busy and at times it was hard to walk between the tables, which can only be a good thing for that area.

During this time I met KevLev and had a quick chat about arty stuff and how he was getting on. Then it was sketch time (here are a few artists doing my sketches).

Simon Davis
(http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t136/commandoforces/Conventions/P5280516.jpg)

Boo Cook & Richard Starkings
(http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t136/commandoforces/Conventions/P5280518.jpg)

Boo Cook
(http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t136/commandoforces/Conventions/P5280520.jpg)

John McCrea
(http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t136/commandoforces/Conventions/P5280521.jpg)

I did manage to have a chat with most of them and I was sure I took a few pics of Leigh but I have no idea where those are! During this I managed to pick up a few cards from artists who have nothing to do with 2000AD, just to get some sketches from over the following weeks, mainly due to their various styles.

I also bought the following few books

And was given this free at Boo's table and rather enjoyed it!

Like I said earlier I had a few chats with the artists and now have a seed of a commission in my head for one to do but that will be a while off at the moment and no none of the clan will be in this one  ;)

I reckon if they can get the queue sorted out then I would go again but at the moment I feel twice bitten, thrice shy! The rest of what happened is normal con behaviour, chats and laughs!

If I missed anyone out I do apologise.

Another cracking write op CF, I love that you (once again) stood up to those juves!

Maybe Leigh G was simply too good looking for your camera and frazzled it's circuits? You've got me intrigued and excited about your next commission, I hope it's as good as your last one!

Clan Moore and Captain Skank spent a wearing day yesterday wandering around the aisles for what seemed like two weeks, ingesting the sensory onslaught of the Anime tables, the teems of dressed up folk and the endless small press setups (where do you start with them all?)
Sought refuge time and again at the 2000AD stand and had nice natters with Leigh G, Rufus and Tharg's bods.
Bit miffed that (A) The good Captain and i bought tickets for the raffle to win the HUGE Leigh Dredd and Clint Slogh Feg's, only to find after the event that we'd bought tickets to the wrong event and (B) my daughter got a free one of the new new Dredd mugs that i wanted.
Still, the raffle tickets we bought were actually for the Comic Alliance folks, so monies went to a very good cause, and we actually won stuff.  :D
And, along with the excellent print i got off him, i got a sketch from Leigh that i'd long been after.
Its been a goal for quite some time now to collect artists takes on Black Max, my favourite British comic character of the 70's, and Leigh's always been top of the list, being a very worthy succesor to the likes of Lopez and Font with his stunnigly moody work on Defoe. I'd asked for the sketch just before he'd only literally 2 minutes before going to the next panel but, when presented with this referenec pic:

Came up with this lovely shot:

Cheers Leigh, you've got the cranky old fella down to a tee.

Here's me and The Mrs in aforementioned cosplay, courtesy of some kind stranger who took the picture that we totally forgot to.
