Title: CD Writers and their stinky evil...
Post by: Matt Timson on 04 December, 2002, 09:04:09 PM
OK troops- I'm attempting to make a few compilation music CDs- purely for home use of course- and have a nice new 48 speed writer.  Can anybody tell me why the end cocking result is always the same- a copy that jumps?!?

Somebody suggested copying at a slower speed, but I'm getting the same problems with jumping and wotnot at 16 speed as I do at 48.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm almost annoyed.

Are you copying straight from CD to CDR or from CD to hard drive and then hard drive to CDR. In my limited experience of this I've found that copying from a disc image on the hard drive is more reliable.

Slow down!  Slow down!!  I'm an artist remember?!?

This is a music CD I'm talking about here- just so we're all on the same page.  Excuse my huge thickness in such matters- but are you saying that I should copy the tracks to my hard drive and then copy from there to my blank CD?  Can I do that?  Stop laughing at the back!!

It's Nero by the way- more luck than judgement I can tell you...

Cheers.

If you are copying an entire CD rather than making a compilation, then there should be an option to create a disk image (for which you will need lots of space on your computer) and then use that disk image to create the new CD.

hey Johnny don't worry mate, i am pure techno non scrott, after being so smug earlier i totally failed to copy a CD this eve, however apparently the originaal has a jump...

with nero you want the wizard, its the easy bit, if it doesn't come up check the long menus, > copy cd> next next yes yes> test & burn> sometimes the blank CD is crap & needs binning... try that? tho i stand ready to be corrected..

I keep getting buffer underruns. I've tried unplugging from the net, and shutting down one or two programs, but it still happens, I've no idea which Processes I should shut down.

Nero was working fine until about 2 weeks ago, when I had a problem with Norton. Since then I haven't been able to get Nero to work. I've unistalled and reinstalled it (the last version 5- my pc is too slow to run V6).

Could it have something to do with installing real player?

It's a combination of lots of things and never seems to be consistent. I had a 48x drive on my old machine but could never wrote at more than 2x without it going awry.

I guess you just have to keep slowing down the write speed down until you find a reliable setting for your system... :-(

When you stick a cd into your pc, it should automatically copy the disc's contents onto the hard drive using windows, if not, go to the start menu on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, click it, click on 'my computer', then pick the cd you want to copy stuff off from the list under 'devices with removeable storage'.  From there, it's pretty self-explanatory, even to an artist.
IIRC, you just check/uncheck the little boxes on the left side of the tracks listed, depending on which tracks you want transferred to your hard drive, and they end up being stored in 'my documents' under 'my music' - just drag and drop which tracks you want onto the Nero menu, and off you go.
You're not using other programmes like Photoshop while the disc is burning, are you?.

Matt,
I've had it run at all three speeds... x1, x2, x4 all three produce buffer underruns. I've also tried testing then burning- and I get buffer underruns on the test burn.

The under run always occurs just after the burn process reaches 99%.

Any other ideas?

It could be lots of things - lack of system resources (try shutting eveything down), a physical problem with the CDs (try different brands), a fragmented hard drive (defragment it), your HD interface settings etc. etc.. A Google search will probably reveal more than I can suggest.

***EXTREME SUGESTION*** But given your problems with Real and Norton as well, how feasible is it to reformat your drive (backing up your data and software keys etc. first of course) and start again?

UKDANE:

If the disc is under-running at the same point each time, it may be a drive error. Try running a simulation instead, you'll need to put a blank cd in the drive but the laser wont be turned on so the disc is safe. The drive will basically do everything it would do if it were burning the disc, without the burning. If you get the same issue you know the drive is the problem. If its fine, you mat have some dodgy discs.

Hope this helps!

UKDANE & MR Eyebrows,

I don't know how beefy your respective pc's are but I'd try shutting down your virus scanner (maybe it's a good idea not to be connect to the internet if you're gonna switch off background scanning). I had real problem try to burn cd's on my old pc and this was the only solution....

WOW! You PC Monkeys have real problems with your puters all the time, you want to get a Mac, piece of piss - you put the CD in, it asks you what you want to call it, then you go to iTunes and click on burn CD...

Get a proper computer. Get a Mac?.

Plus I'm 6'3" wear trousers, am hairy and a male. :-)

My point exactly. Real men use PC's. There was a time when the Macs graphics programs were better but those days are long gone, my friend.

True, but I'm still not backing down on the Mac PC debate.

Who wants to 'right click'? Have you ever heard anything so pap in your life, what's the point in right clicking when you can do it all with one button with a streamlined mouse.

The mice designed for PC users are like tanks! all because you want to 'right click', go and buy some trousers.

By the way guys do you have bumper stickers for your TT's that say 'Real men use PC's'?

'The Right Click Club'? - sounds like the Red Hand Gang, crossed with the Mickey Mouse Club.

I'll stick with being cool to be uncool and the simple easy to understand, uncomplicated, understated, uncompromising, beautifully designed, quiet, creative and Powerful Apple Mac.

Bought some software the other day, the instruction book for installation was 36pages for PC, and a double sided sheet of A5 for the Mac - says it all really. Save less time trying to figure out how to use the damn thing, spend more time working on it and what do you know you improve, your work's better and you don't end up driving a TT like your granny.

'Save less time trying to figure out how to use the damn thing'

Taht's not why. It's assumed that the Mac audience is too stupid to do anything in the OS, and, being for little girls, want to spend more time on the phone talking about boys, than actually working on the computer.

I'm *really* trying to stay out of this, but this kind of Mac snobbery is one of the reason I hate them so fucking much.

I use a Mac every single day at work (I'm typing this on it, as a matter of fact), and I think they truely are an awful machine compared with the PC. The bottom line these days is more personal preferrence than anything to do with what's 'better', but even today, just as I've encountered every step of my professional career, you get the Mac elitists who feel the need to broadcast how far superior they think they and their Mac are to the PC and their users. They always without fail, of course, just make themselves sound like utter wankers.

"I'm still not backing down on the Mac PC debate."

I'm not asking you to back down- in fact, you were the one that brought it up.

Why are Mac users so much like TV evangelists?!?  You've found your Nirvana and can't understand anyone that doesn't share your enthusiasm- it's a bit mental.  I've worked with Macs and PCs for years and always had less trouble with PCs- which is why I went back to using them full time.

There was something on the TV a few weeks back, that I only caught the tail end of- but they were basically comparing Macs and PCs.  It seems that they came up pretty equal- until you dropped them both down the stairs.  The Mac was a virtual write off because although you *could* get the parts for it, you had to order them in and the cost was so prohibitive, you were pretty much better off to just replace the damn thing.  Of course, a quick trip to PC World for your busted PC and forty minutes later- up and running again.

Able to burn music I already own, or be able to get back to work within a couple of hours.... Hmmm... it's a toughie...

;)

That said, as previously mentioned on another thread, if the good reports I hear about the latest Macs keep coming in (no bugs or hassles), then I might switch the next time I upgrade- just so that I can burn my CDs.  Oh, and I don't use a mouse either.

:)

Wils - chill out man, it's just a bit of idle banter, tongue in cheek. I think Macs are better Shane prefers PC's at the end of the day there are far more important things going on in the world, just passing the time.

I mean it's dangerous to go back and look at old threads. necro posting is posting on a thread that's fallen off the board. The longer it's been off the worse the offence. dabbling in the past is whats happening on this thread. And it's turning you (larf) in to a troll.

Let dead threads lie. It's for the best.

Ive supported a lot of systems in my time PC's, MAC's, UNIX, LINUX, AS4000 and VMS.  All have advantages and disadvantages.  But MACs were really good till broke, once broke getting the buggers fixed was a pain in the arse.  PCs on the other hand break a lot but seem easier to fix.  In my limited experience.....
