Title: The Raid
Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 10 September, 2011, 05:44:35 PM

This seems to tick all the correct boxes for me, although the synopsis seems like something that's coming out next year  ;)

They should subtitle Dredd: the Blitz.

It's going to be a nightmare getting to the top of that building, seeing as it appears to be leaning at a forty five degree angle!

Aw, darnit, you beat me to it Commando dude  :P, I was gonna start this thread yesterday morning when I read about The Raid, and the incredible reviews it's currently getting from the Toronto Film Festival, but I thought I'd just as easily do it today, that's procastination for you , but dang(!), that movie looks just incredible, even if it does share a very close similarity with the Dredd plot, but The Raid should be out considerably sooner, so let's hope they don't clash...

I hope there's as much knocking heads together as there is in this, in Dredd.

My guess is we won't be seeing a Dredd trailer till this has been and gone from the cinemas sometime after March/April:

The buzz this film is getting feels very much like Star Wars in 1977 or The Matrix in 1999, wherein a hitherto unknown dark-horse film breaks out, and changes the rules of the game for years after... would be nice if it was, that trailer is amazing!

Ooooooh yes, I'm so looking forward to this. The trailer just blew me away. Loved the action choreography and the mixture of hand-to-hand martial arts combat and gunplay. Unfortunately there's still no release date set for where I live. :'(

I ranted about how great this movie is a wee while ago on the last movie watched thread so I won't bang on about it too much here, but you've hit the nail right on the head there. It really feels like watching one of those movies that just redefines action movies, where it feels like something genuinely incredible and genre-defining is going on right in front of your eyes. The film it reminded me of most was Hard Boiled, because it gave me that rush I got watching that as a kid, it's phenomenal.

I've got a review here where I do bang on about it a great deal!

I don't see anything in that trailer that's new or 'redefines' anything - which can be good in that I hate it when the only good thing in a film is revealed in a trailer and you wait the entire movie for more and you don't get it.

And referencing 'Crouching Tiger'? YAWN.

I'm guessing there's gold in there since everyone seems to be peeing their pants, but to believe that on the strength of that trailer alone? No chance.

When I use the word "redefine" I don't so much mean that you're going to see things you've never seen before, assuming you've seen people shooting and punching other people before. What I mean is you probably haven't seen people shooting and punching people with this kind of energy and intensity, at least not for a very long time. When I compare it to Hard  Boiled it's because I'd seen gunfights before Hard Boiled, but seeing that movie just changed the way I would look at gunfights from then on because its gunfights were so freaking awesome. I found this does the same thing for fisticuffs, I realized watching it that I hadn't been that excited by a fight scene in years, and I was holding my breath for chunks of it just through sheer excitement.

Saying that, if the trailer leaves you cold then it's possible you won't enjoy it to be honest.

I won't say it left me cold, just not as impressed as I wanted to be. And I just can't stand fighting movies reduced to artistic visuals, so them mentioning CTiger just didn't work for me.

And I desperately want to be excited by a fight scene again too, a fast and effective one without endless repetition.

I'm not putting the movie down, at all, just saying the trailer disappoints. I'm hoping that when I do get to watch it, I'm as happy as you; don't want to be spoilt though, so haven't read your review.

I wouldn't say it redefines anything. It's just really, really effective as a pure action movie. Better than most. I didn't find the martial arts to be repetitive...but 2 colleagues of mine that are serious martial artists found that they wished that there was more diversity in the fighting. It's Silat for the most part.

I enjoyed it last night.

This is nearly the perfect action movie. Not too much down time as the plot unfolds and the team meet all the crims. The action sequences were choreographed excellently, with not too many edits to fracture the pace.
I noticed some excellent fire drills (only saw one dead mans click, there may have been more which shows how entertained I was), and some brilliant use of elbows & knees in the fighting. There was a bit too much chop socky kicking and spinning (which is not the best thing to use in such an environment) but I was expecting that from this, after all it's not a Western film.

It does have a couple of standout sequences but those'll be for you to find when you watch it.

8.5/10

I went to see The Raid this morning. I thought it was a great action movie, not fantastic, not groundbreaking, but still a thoroughly enjoyable hour and a half. Lots of action, well choreographed fight scenes and some very brutal deaths. They could have mixed the gun play/knees & elbow combat through the film a bit more, and why a character would walk down a corridor littered with weapons and not pick one up is beyond me, that's movie logic I suppose. Still, a great action packed film, and very much worth a viewing.

Full Jock illustration on his website: http://www.4twenty.co.uk/movies/the-raid/

Not only is he a great comic artist but his work translates to commercial illustration (for want of a better term) very well, unlike a lot other comic artists (IMO of course).

I've noticed that the DVD and Blu Ray of DREDD is up for pre-order now on Amazon - wonder if they'll do a limited or special edition?

Didn't Jock tweet a year or two back that he was working on a DREDD poster?

The Prince Charles cinema in London have said they are planning to do a triple bill of Dredd, The Raid and Robobcop sometime early 2013.

I'm there.

My Jock Raid steelbook just arrived - and it's gorgeous.

Also, just watched this today and thought it was amazing, so much so that I wrote a brief review for kryptonainwarrior.com!

Just watching this again as I type and it doesn't stand up to repeated viewings. All the atrocious chop socky sequences really let this down and take it from the realms of believable gun play and tactical movement, into a fantasy world where one man keeps being attacked by a corridor full of crims, one at a time, YAWN!

From a decent start it just descends into a typical Asian martial arts action film, which isn't bad but not as amazing as the six billion people who watched it during its initial release at the pictures keep saying.

Also, having seen the Dredd film now, I can see even more similarities, which is upsetting to say the least!

I'm not saying its shit, just that it's typical of every other film in this genre and I still give it high marks for pure action!

You mean they are not limited to a big building? Damn...

I myself would like to check out the Raid IF it promises to offer more then just high action and "chop socky sequences" which from the sound of things it doesn't. Dredd as a film offers much more.

No, it offers something different. It's a martial arts movie, and a damned good one. Possibly the best I have seen. But if you don't like martial arts movies, then there's no point watching it.

I love martial arts flicks! Or used to before they got too obsessed with copying the Matrix.

If the Raid is anything to the effect or Enter the Dragon or Once Upon A Time in China then I'm all for it, but if it's just another crappy bullet-time affair then I am not interested.

Don't worry about the guns too much, everyone seems to run out of rounds for their weapons and then they all decide to use machetes, knives, etc at the same time!
Title: Re: The Raid
Post by: radiator on 10 October, 2012, 02:17:05 PM
I think that's what I found to be a slight let down about The Raid - the trailers made it look like a blend of John Woo style gunplay and balletic brawling, but towards the end of the film it just becomes a run of the mill martial arts movie - I found a few of the one on one fights really dragged.

Still, some amazing sequences early on which make it a film worth watching in my opinion - get some mates over and crack open a few beers, just don't expect it to blow your mind.

The thing I didn't like the most was how pretty much the whole swat team died straight away. It could have been really cool with multiple characters, and then you can have your favourite, instead of just one guying going round kicking ass.

Also the whole brother thing was pretty gay.
