Title: The IMDB Test
Post by: Judo on 14 April, 2012, 03:51:51 PM
How many of the top 100 IMDB films have you seen? Anything that you strongly object to or feel the list is missing? And no cheating as its not a contest and the more you've yet to see the luckier you are!

Mark the movies you've seen with an X.
1. [ x] The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
2. [ x] The Godfather (1972)
3. [ x] The Godfather: Part II (1974)
4. [ x] Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
5. [ x] Pulp Fiction (1994)
6. [ x] Schindler's List (1993)
7. [ x] The Dark Knight (2008)
8. [ x] 12 Angry Men (1957)
9. [ x] One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
10. [ x] Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
1st subtotal - 10
11. [ x] Casablanca (1942)
12. [ x] Star Wars (1977)

15. [ x] Goodfellas (1990)
16. [x ] Rear Window (1954)
17. [x ] Cidade de Deus (2002)
18. [x ] Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
19. [x ] C'era una volta il West (1968) - love this film, evil peter fonda's eye blues
20. [x ] The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
2nd subtotal: 20/20
21. [ x] Fight Club (1999) - best twist film but overly long
22. [x ] Up (2009)
23. [x ] The Usual Suspects (1994)

27. [x ] The Matrix (1999)
28. [x ] Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

You can tell the type of people that post scores on IMDB from that list! I think I've seen all the ones I'd want to on there - probably about half.

There's some real pretentious shite on that list - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless fucking Mind and Requiem For a Dream are prime examples (even the titles are annoying and overlong!)

You're right about the lack of Disney films - very odd.

I'm at 100.

For a while I was 250/250 when I set myself the challenge to see the lot. Good fun finding them all - some like 'Sunrise : A Tale of Two Humans' are out of copyright so you can get them on Googlevideo. Some I bought and later resold on eBay others may have been 'auditioned' from reputable websites.

Great way to see a lot of films you wouldn't normally seek out - 'Wages of Fear' about guys driving dynamite trucks and 'Witness for the Prosecution' which has a great couple of twists are two for a start. On the downside there is a lot of Kurosawa which I found a bit dull apart from 'High and Low' which was a contemporary thriller based on an Ed McBain story. A previous quest of mine was to read all 55 McBain 87th Precinct novels which was a great sucess despite the trouble to the postman's back!

Of the list as it stands just now I'm missing :

129. The Artist (2011)
137. Black Swan (2010)
151. Warrior (2011)
159. The Secret in Their Eyes (2009)
174. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
190. Mary and Max (2009)
194. Harakiri (1962)
203. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
208. Fanny and Alexander (1982)
211. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)
222. A Beautiful Mind (2001)
225. Ip Man (2008)
228. Tokyo Story (1953)
237. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
241. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
247. Castle in the Sky (1986)
248. Shutter Island (2010)
250. Andrei Rublev (1966)

That's 18 to go but the list changes everytime you refresh it - I distinctly remember waiting a day to copy my list so that the 3 hour 'Fanny and Alexander' had dropped off.

Of my 'to do' list most are in the last couple of years - things find their natural place over time and I doubt 'Shutter Island' will be there next week (not that I've seen it). It is quite elitist with a lot of films there, it would seem, so that the voters look intellectual - tell me 'Wild Strawberries' is a better film than 'Rushmore'.

Good fun and after this I 'graduated' to only watching films that started with a 'W'  (http://100wmovies.blogspot.co.uk/) and then films that were 'The Definite Article' (http://thedefinitearticlemovies.blogspot.co.uk/2010/01/no-1-road.html). Sadly I'm backworking again so no time for such fripperies any more.

From a quick skim I think I've seen all but Up and that'll be on TV at Xmas I'm sure. I had a bit of a moment when I didn't recognise some of them by their original names.

I suppose the follow-up question is: How many do you own on DVD? I don't have that many as they get shown on TV quite a bit (mainly fancy releases of films I love), but I do have the Criterion release of Seven Samuari (a thing of beauty), Optimum's special edition of Rashomon, Sin City with the free comic, Eternal Sunshine, The Prestige, Pan's Labyrinth (possibly twice as I was given the Del Toro boxset although I've got most of them singly on DVD) as well as the LoTR, Matrix and Alien boxsets. There might be one or two others on the free DVDs given away in papers, like Cinema Paradiso (which has to have come from the Guardian rather than the Mirror ;) ).

From the top 100 I'm within 10 feet of DVDs for 13 of them. If recordings of any sort are counted I'd probably say about half. Do try not to watch the same thing twice yet the last thing I wastched as the 'Up to 11' Edition of 'This is Spinal Tap' - 3 discs for a fiver well recommended!

I have most of those on dvd,but i'm not really one for lists.Mine changes all the time it's ever evolving.

Though i'm saddened that both Dazed and Confused and Thank God it's Friday aren't in the list....infact i think there's still alot missing hence the not liking lists's

wow buttonman 250/250 that's some severe film buffitude going on there... You free for a pub quiz lolol?!

129) The artist - its really just a shitter version of sunset boulevard but good enough.
137) Black swan - its really just a shitter version of swan lake but good enough.
151) Warrior -its really just a shitter version of rocky but good enough.

Hmm I'm sensing a pattern... Beauty and the beast though - one of the best disney films - though your possibly not the target market.

I agree on the pretension front and some of these films just *arent* the best, but merely non offensive eg the prestige. Good film but I have it on dvd and still aren't in a rush to rewatch it. Eternal sunshine same, I love michel gondry and it was a good film, but not top 100 good.

Emperor Up is good though I found it a little too long and the 3D made my head hurt. Dvd wise... all the best horrors and all the best martial arts. No jackie chans armour of the gods??? Love that film. Then I have a few of the darker 'classics' but between myself and my sunnier flatmate we have about 60 or so of these x

Also has a whole load of similarities with a 1997 Japanese animated film called Perfect Blue. Darren Aronofsky acknowledges the similarities are there, but claims the film wasn't an influence, which is a bit weird seeing as how he already owns the film rights to Perfect Blue, having bought them so he could 'borrow' one of the scenes for film number 64 on the list. mik oh yes perfect blue! I haven't seen that in years but now that you mention it yeah a bit. But perfect blue has a better, darker plot. Swan lakes perfect as it is and if I'd been asked how it could be improved pills, lesbians and wanking in front of mothers would *definitely* not have been my answer. God portman your glory days of leon are well and truly behind you x

Back when Buttonman was documenting his IMDB quest, I was inspired to get a couple of colleagues into a mildly competitive attitude to the top 250. Looking back at the quality spreadsheet I created at the time, I see that I've seen 162/250 and 81/100 as they were at the time. Of this new top 100 list, I'm down for 79. Confusingly, Up is the only one of the ten or so new entries which I haven't seen. There appears to be a lot of movement in the 75-150 range.

The amount of Hitchcock counts against me.

I would've thought Wild Strawberries was more worthy solely for starting with a W? Sadly, I haven't seen either but I'll happily tell you that Andrei Rublev (squeezing in at last place) is a better film than at least 242 of the other entries. Although I thought The Shawshank Redemption was a bit pish and certainly not anywhere near one of top 250 films I've ever seen.

Aaronovsky licenced Perfect Blue so he could recreate scenes from it, not because he plans to remake it or give it a higher-profile re-release in the west.  Maybe not entirely kisher on some artsy-fartsy creative level, but perfectly legal and gives something back to the creators of Perfect Blue, so I imagine they're happy enough.

Only 42 from the list, and I'm surprised that Star Trek is on there - a very entertaining film, certainly, but top 100 material?
I did better on the IMDB Bottom 100, mind, with a healthy 68, though fair cop I had my on mini-quest to watch every film on that list before I realised I couldn't keep up with it - DNAlien and Alien Versus Hunter don't even chart any more!  Some of the films on the list were actually entertaining, too, like Battlefield Earth, Godzilla Vs the Smog Monster, American Ninja 5 and Cool As Ice - "so bad they're entertaining" still counts!

I'd imagine it's more to do with the mentality of genre fans. You don't get anybody telling you how much they love to sit down with a bad rom-com or watch badly acted, badly written indie relationship dramas with shit effects. Yet there are plenty people on here - myself included - who will happily watch the ropiest of horror/kung fu/sci-fi pish and maybe even get something out of it.

They're also the sort of geeks who then go and rate things on IMDB.

No, they usually just say something like "did you see that thing at 9 o'clock on ITV last night?"

but cosh some ratings are just a sham - the thing!? Really not top 100?! And blade runner?! Shawshank is a good film but it forces its ideologies on the viewer at every freakin turn. Pretty much everything alludes to hope, belief, freedom etc throat rammed at us.plus its overly long and I'm not a prison drama fan. They make me yawn.

Snap snap byah. yah all the amazingly shit rom-drams are tv shows. Episodes 2,3,4 of god awful shit but awesome show Made in Chelsea are testament to that. Great lines such as...

girl - you're phoning to me while your working out at the gym?
Guy - yeah just sweatworking... networking while I sweat.

Makes me heavies lols that show. Ill add now that I don't have a tv aerial so most tv generally makes me lols with shititude. All the best ones are foreign though as their are a lot of good live action versions of various rom comics - western comics can't do romance and eastern comics can't do super heroes very well - strange cultural differences floating through the globe. I'd love to look into why different types of fiction are more popular in certain countries x

You'll end up watching Uwe Boll films which is a scary prospect. The sad thing is that the campaign to vote all his movies down to the bottom 100 leads to some inaccurate assessments - Alone in the Dark 2 is soooooooo much shittier than House of the Dead.

http://www.imdb.com/chart/bottom

Also anyone undertaking this can get a quick start as quite a few of them are public domain (they tend to get MST3ked):

http://www.archive.org/details/ManosTheHandsofFate
http://www.archive.org/details/Beast_of_Yucca_Flats_movie

http://www.archive.org/details/Eegah
http://www.archive.org/details/santa_claus_conquers_the_martians
http://www.archive.org/details/Horrors_of_Spider_Island

Although checking it, there are at least a dozen other public domain films with a rating low enough to get them on the list but they haven't received the 1,500 votes needed to qualify. It does mean bottom 100 hunters miss out on classics like The Aztec Mummy Against the Humanoid Robot:

www.archive.org/details/TheRobotVs.TheAztecMummylaMomiaAztecaControElRobotHumano1958-

I might give Zombie Nation a spin as it is free to watch on Love Film. Also Turks in Space seems like a must-see and I have a horrible feeling I'm going to have to watch Seven Mummies.

Well that wasn't my best idea, and I've worn a wedding dress and asked to have frozen eggs thrown at my head (not at the same time). This film was just bad with few redeeming features - they clearly had a bit of money to get a decent camera (I've seen zero budget zombie films and this wasn't one) but they clearly just couldn't be bothered even trying to make a decent movie. The sets are a giveaway as they clearly just got the run of a warehouse and added a few desks in an attempt to make it look like a police station (one which happens to have a gong in the background for no apparent reason), but so is the make-up - the women have been murdered and buried but the only sign of this is some excessive eye shadow. The only reason you'd watch it is to find out if it is as bad as people say (yes it is, you don't need to watch to to find out) or for the moments where you just wonder if what they were thinking (watch out for the cheeseburger line). Worst of all, it was just boring.

I have seen about 74 films from the list. There were some fillms, where I've only seen the first or second half but I didn't count them as seen.

I'm surprised the following films are not among the list.

The Long Good Friday (1980)
Oldboy (2003)
Hard Boiled (1992)

There's probably some others I haven't thought of yet.

I was curious about Sunset Boulevard. Obviously, I have heard of the area but never knew there was a film with same name. So I read up the film summary and I am intrigued by it. So much that I've ordered a copy.

I don't think I have seen a Billy Wilder film before.

Be sure to tell us what you think of it (personally I'm a huge fan of Billy Wilder, but I don't want to big up this film to have you disappointed by it)

haha emperor i have actually seen a couple of those but i shall defo get cracking on the others.

Yeah John those films are all classic but perhaps a little controversial so more prone to a love hate reply to voting? oh im so glad to hear you are getting a copy of sunset boulevard as it is one of my favourite films ever. The final scene is really what cinema is all about imho. great script and perfomances x

Joe Soap, Davey and Judo, I have a good feeling I will like Sunset Boulevard. Haven't got it yet, still waiting for the postman.

As a side note, I watched my first Woody Allen film the other night, Midnight in Paris. I switched off after 15 mins. I couldn't get into it. Is watching Woody Allen films an acquired taste?
