Title: Its Monster Fun!
Post by: Art on 27 December, 2002, 05:34:29 PM
This summer I'm going to make it my mission to catch at least one monster truck related event. If dragraces and tractor-pulls are also involved, tehn all the better. I also fully intend to eat a hotdog with chilli at said event.

Hey, don't knock it! Hopefully it will have all the traditional elements of British summertime fu:. The bales of hay, the tractor engine with the steam powered organ, a stall selling those little flat polystyrene aeroplanes that you'll lose after one flight, the screaming kids, warm cider, the suspected botulism from the burger stall.

However in addition to that it will have AWESOME!  Trucks doing EXTREME! Things like jumping over stuff, crushing stuff and pulling stuff.

The only think of to make it better is a fly-by by the red arrows.

You'ld need some ciderd up Townies kicking the crap out of "strangers" to complete that English Summertime feeling. I'm susprised your not going to a US show though Art, Monster Trucks AND Stalls selling Automatic Weapons, surely thats Wyatt heaven?

I have heard tales of gun fairs in Texas, complete with pensioners firing .50cal hand guns and almost falling over. When I end up living in America I want to go to one of those just once, just to see how scary it gets...

Yo Arthur ! fantastic ! can i come? can i drive said monster trucks big donut stylee? can i hang onto the back while the do crashing crunching mashing stunts ? can we all hang out in leather snorting desiel looking daredevil & a bit crazy. sigh.

If theres no room at truck fest you could all come & watch me attempting to navigate at Rallys every month around scotland. first ones 15th Feb in the SNOW & the countdowns & adrenalins already started...arggghhh.

And you'll be wanting the over-priced hot donut van, lines of temp toilets, St Johns Ambulance, recruitment shed for the Services and stalls selling paintings of the second world war, or cheapo leather jackets or cheapo baseball caps.

Unfortunately the big airshow, which came to our local base for the last two years, is going back down south so I'll probably miss out this year. And not add to my bullet collection...

I'd stick with someone similar Art, or go banger racing (or even dog racing) and not some Yankie nonsense. You'll be line-dancing, buying country and western and giving the finger not the v's next...

Slips, I once met an American who was genuinely angry that he'd come to Scotland to study and discovered it wasn't like in Highlander.

He hated the fact we'd abandoned the clan system and didn't wear kilts every day and used to berate people randomly on it.

He was also very disappointed more people didn't ride horses.

I'm not kidding. He was a right wanker.

Anyway, they're not monster trucks, but perhaps in the summer I will try to persuade you all to come to Farming Yesteryear at Scone Palace near Perth.

They have big tractors.
(Does Scotland suddenly seem less modern to you all?)

You had better talk somebody into taking you, or there will be no-one to carry your bowl for you. By the way, O fearless despot; if you want to travel incognito do you employ young boys to carry you in a plastic bag; pretending you are a prize off a stall?

Just wondering

Dave, I don't employ people. I give orders and they are grateful to obey.

But don't make the mistake of assuming the evil fish is helpless in any situation.

I have eerie powers, you know.

Ahhh yes... Ploughing competitions nothing more English than that. And the world heage-laying championship was just up the road from me the other yeah.

And, a few exceptions aside, Americans are inferior to us British in all aspects. They should be scorned not looked up to.

I dont think its a case of nationality theres dumb people all over the shop. Theres lots of peeps in the US = more dumb asses thats law of averages. Thing is a lot of Americans in general are very isolated a lot of em are barely able to point to Hong Kong on a world map. Their brainwashed with a lot of bullshit respecting their flag before they start school and all that patriotic sentimental bullshit. And the whole History vs Holywood thing too. Anyhow sorry man just wanted to say there are americans i definately look up to and ones that i scorn, thats not cos their American but cos their either good or bad people, happens everywhere.

Americans are fat and stupid and cannot spell properly, spending all day watching Oprah and stuffing themselves with cookies. And their favourite sport is Rounders.

Yes Gary thats a wonderful swweping statement. So what about the brits on 18-30 holidays and those of their ilk (who the meditereneans hate) or those whos sit around all day happy with the dole.  We can hardly be considered superior, can we?!?

Ah, but what you have to realise, Mr Gary "I'll do American Football but in a maze, that'll be futuristic" Wilkinson, is that Baseball is rounders with added multimedia fun. Rounders never had a 50ft tall display screen telling you what song to sing next or showing credits for each player as they step up to bat. Rounders also has no theme music whatsoever.

As a side note, an American friend of mine recently attended a football game and was impressed at (A) How everyone would spontaneously start singing, without any form of organised prompting, and (B) How the singing would remain essentially tuneless and degenerate into a kind of atonal wall of noise. I feel that this demonstrates several important differences between American and British attitudes to sport.

in reply to gary wilkinson

The fact that Bush runs the US of A bears no relevance on the political ideals of the entire nation. He was probably voted in by a bunch of Texan rednecks with the cursed earth twitch. Id hate to think that Tony Blair was representative of the British people; he represents them yes but since he is a politician that instantly disqualifies him from having any sort of clue as to what the people want. I think politicans have to have something wrong with them to get were they are. I mean all the really smart people get set up underground record labels or become cash toting entreprenuers and the smartest of them all steer clear of politics like its the bubonic plauge. In fact Americans arnt fat thats ridiculous and i really hope you are joking. IF anything they are a much more health and fitness concious nation than us brits and their diets arnt as bad as what many would have you believe. But again its down to people not geographic location, not political ideology, sex, race or interests. If you see a great girl that knocks you off your feet and turns out to be American do you discard your initial impression, i hope not.

The US gave us the frozen Breakfast Pizza, not as I first thought an all day breakfast flavoured pizza, but a pizza for breakfast. Their chocolate is inedible, you can't smoke in a lot of public places but you can be pumped full of industrial byproduct belching from their factories, and Heineken is seen as a luxury beer. Stop this madness, let the individual states back into the Commonwealth leading to an enlarged Canada, it's for their own good.
Oh and the Bush bashing in Europe is laughable. When Clinton left office he pardoned a complete shower of shit for their crimes like some ancient Monarch, Chirac and Shroeder are also incredibly bent (and in this post oddly spelt). I don't like Bush but making him out to be a cowpoke anti-christ is laughable. To put it another way name a nice, straight US president who knew what he was doing...anyone?

"I mean all the really smart people get set up underground record labels or become cash toting entreprenuers and the smartest of them all steer clear of politics "

er some good points there mr Nemesis, but a) I'm smart & entreprenuering but due to ethics & idealism fail to be cash toting &
b) due to ethics & idealism i do stick my nose in politics (only local due to afore mentioned ethics)
c)All the good citizens of the USA i have ever met in my shop are the RUDEST of all nationalities, in fact i haven't met ONE civil one..as a customer, in other aspects of life yes.

so what can we all learn from this ? that all sweeping statments will jump up & bite our arses/asses.

Those guys who tour the uk dressed as the blues brothers did a show in Swansea last summer, and as they went to get their'bluesmobile' from the carpark at the rear of the club at about 3am, they were given a right good drubbing by a bunch of townies, including broken legs, fingers and collarbones. There's some things you can always rely on.

And tractor pulls-woo-hoo!!#
