Title: 2003- the future is here!!!
Post by: Matt Timson on 02 January, 2003, 01:09:00 AM
Yeah?  Well I feel cheated.  Back in the seventies (when I was a mere young pup), I was promised all sorts of technological advancements.

Where's my f*cking rocket belt?  Food pills?  We don't even have a "Moonbase Alpha"- never mind a working death ray laser pistol.

We've all been conned...

Personal jet pack, that's what I want. Actually we were kind of promised this a couple of years ago... then it turned out that the top-secret new 'personal transportation system' the bloke had been working on for years, and had strongly hinted would fly, turned out to the a totally crap upright C5 with two wheels thing.

The world (bar the internet) is crap I want my future back!

I want my future back!

You have to wonder if the future turning out to be a bit crap is the reason that alternate history stories are becoming so popular with SF writers.

I just want the heated U-fronts, as seen in Judge Dredd.

But without the setting-fire-to-your-knob aspect, of course.

"Booming economy"

What with stock market collapsing and a debt fuelled consumer/housing boom... hmm didn?t we have that just before the last recession

"heated U-fronts"

Get a lap top... but be careful er 'loin' burns due to too hot laptops have been reported in the Lancet

booming economy, now now, we dont want anyone who is old enough ( like me and most of you lot ) to walk around saying 'last time it all went wrong', no no, we want lots of smiley happy people flying in the face of reality and borrowing 4.5 times earnings and getting caught....

if we all get redundant we will have to sit around playing judge dredd on ps2 ALL DAY
now wouldn't that be a pity....

I want one of those helicopter cars. But i have to wait 3 years. I bet all the rich people have them. Lets revolt against people with a mansion (including the queen. She'll have 3!) and steal the copter-cars!

By the way my names not Sam its Kris(tian)

Actually the internet's crap compared to sticking a lead into your cranial jack and zooming though cyberspace fighting ICE etc. Only pausing to shag deadly razor-nailed leather-clad female ninjas...

Couldn't agree with you more.

Are people so blody stupid that they forgot how it all screwed up just a few years ago.

My mortgage is 1 times my income and i'm proud of it.  I looked at the mess last time when i was a young pup fresh out of uni and thought "i am screwed if am going to borrow so far beyond my income that a small interest rise would mess me up completely" i also realised you should only pay what a house is worth, i mean really worth.  Has everyone forgotten negative equity? are the people who got caught last time doing it again or is a whole new generation of naive peeps?

but we got lots and lots of things that where promised didnt we.

instant video imaging, to chat across the world.
tiny everything.
big tvs.
space tourism(if you are really really rich).

but more scarry is the amount of things suggested here in tooth. from instant justice and hand id guns. to blood sport violent entertainment.
which many years ago seemed so remote it was pure sci fi, now.well its all a bit concerning.
WWE anyone?
reality TV.worlds worst whatever caught on tape etc.
stick with sci fi me and just hope the good bits suggested start coming out more then the bad ones.

For no particular reason, future is here type stuff I've tripped over in the past couple of weeks.

South Africa developing an intrinsically safe (hem, hem) nuclear reactor , cutely named the pebble bed reactor.

US army shoot down an artillery shell using a laser, currently a static land based one but next to be ground mobile.

US defense dept looking into camo paint that changes colour to suit.

Princeton University study shows evidence of a link between concious thought and the physical world through people influencing random event experiments by thinking about them.

PS

It's worrying the amount of people on this thread who want flying stuff. Aren't the roads dangerous enough?

PPS

William Faulkner said " The past isn't dead. It isn't even past."

Nothing to do with this thread but a nice wee time kind of quote all the same, I think.

I have it on good authority that we brits have been working on Thermachromic and photochromic dyes for a number of years for military use.

yer "scientific" Slippo

PS Photochromic - changes by variations in light, thermachromic - changes byvariations in heat.

He he I read the Great (little) U-Front Disaster yesterday!

DREDD: "You've caused the death of 19 citizens today & the best I can get you on is for using defective underwear"

I skateboarded over to my friends' house yesterday & it had wheels.  Only 12 years before BTTF2 they better have got it sorted by then.
